So I've haven't been on here very long and haven't posted much but I need some info on something I bought today. I answered a kijiji ad in my area where someone was selling their Fathers tools since he passed away a few months ago. I go there and immediately this little red tool box catches my eye. I open it up and everything in there is stamped USA. So instead of continuing with more verbiage I'll simply post some photos and ask my question, did I do good?

That's a great deal. I'm a little jealous. I would have paid $25 for those offset box wrenches. Go back and buy everything else she has marked with "made in USA" asap.

Thanks! I'll let you know what tomorrow brings. She sent me this photo of stuff she has tucked away for me. She also mentioned there are a couple bench vises.

Wow, great score. You ****. :) I would've kept the tools if I were her for future repairs since they were her dad's, but she might be a girly girl. Surprised her boyfriend/husband (if she has one) didn't want them.

If the vises are included in that haul... That would be a haul. We used to get Indestro at work (back when they bought good stuff here), we beat the **** out of it and it survived quite fine. I dunno about the cheapy socket set, but hey, the price is right.

I'm surprised no one her has asked what she looked like... :D

I'd pass on that second set of tools you posted. The socket set looks to be a cheap Taiwan brand as do the vice grips. The vices will probably be pretty sweet. Old, American made awesomeness I'm guessing.

You got a very nice deal from a very nice lady it sounds like she likes you enough to look for more tools.:thumbup:

Just from the pictures that vise grip looks to be vintage, but the little socket set next to it looks like it might have come from either Japan /china back in the day.

If you can get the pipe wrench for a few dollars they always come in handy so keep that in mind.

Overall you did good!

What's the best way for me to clean off the rust on these? I'd like to keep them for a long time.

1) Grats on a a great find. The Indestro tools you bought will last the rest of your life. Even at garage sale prices, those tools are worth way more than you paid.

Your tools are in great shape and have just the tiniest bit of rust so should be easy to clean. To clean up Chrome plated tools, just use fine (.0000) steel wool and some WD-40. Wipe clean and you're good to go!

Don't pay another 25 for the tools in the pic. Cheap stuff. Has it's place and sometimes those Taiwanese socket sets do Yeoman's duty by being the ones beat on and abused.

If the vises are American made they should be good. Already know this guy was a worker and owned a variety of stuff like most of us. He may just as well have used a Chinese vise?

The double box end wrenches are 60's or 70's. The socket set pieces are 70's or 80's. The Taiwanese stuff is 80's or 90's. The old pipe wrench is ageless. If it has sharp teeth it's a keeper.

You may find more exact info about some of these manufacturers and i could be proved wrong but I think those are about right for their vintage. We all have many tools of various eras. Some of my stuff is really old but these are automotive tools and so they are never more than a hundred years old. What I look for is quality. And since Henry Ford brought us the Vanadium Steel tools things have been looking up till modern times when there does seem to be a bunch of junk around unless you are careful. Actually the junk has been around for a long time. It can also be helpful tho when you need something to bang on with a big hammer.

Good haul for 25$

Like others, I'd pass on the other lot of tools, unless those vice grips are vintage Petersen (don't think so?) or another vintage brand, but I'm a sucker for vice grips.

I would go take a look at the vise's though. Still haven't been able to grab an American made vise around here, though I'm dying to find a Wilton. Hasn't stopped me from buying a bunch of English and Canadian made ones though, just as good quality ;)
