My first free tool box.

Hey all,

I've been meaning to post some pics of a sweet old tool box I got for free.

About two weeks ago while working at the shop we had a guy pull up and carry a box up to the back door. Went out and talked to him and he just said. "Im cleaning out my garage and didn't want to throw this out". "I thought you guys might want it".

Well what could I say... I mean it's a free Snap on tool box. Not sure what Im going to do. I know I want to restore it just not sure if I want to paint it a factory color or not.

What do you think.

I'm guessing that latch isn't original, will it stay closed without it?

If so, I'd remove the latch, weld up the holes & then strip it to bare metal. Do you have a DA & a pneumatic grinder that takes 3in Scotchbrite Roloc discs?

What's ya skill level at straightening metal?

& do you have access to a beadblaster?

I can imagine that restored, with fresh cork drawer liners and filled with period correct Snap-on tools.

Can't beat freel I've never seen that model with the front panel hinged at the bottom.

Have it professionaly restored.

Your results may vary, but having BTDTNA. It's an incredible number of hours of labor to restore even a three-drawer tool box. Around here it would cost many time what the box would sell for restored.

Carefully check the bottom of the box. They can trap moisture between the walls. The older one similar to yours I have looked OK from the front, but turned up and probed with a pick, I broke through rust. Doesn't harm the utility, just makes it way more trouble than it would be worth to restore.

I have some snap on stuff from the early 60's. But nothing older. I'm planning on filling the box with gun tools and cleaning supply's. I've built several ar platform rifles and would like somewhere to store all the tools and jigs I have for them.


Would the factory color have been snap on red? The box looks original and maybe a gray or brownish color.

Good score on the box. Looks to be in better shape than mine. A quick blast and sprey bomb will do wonders. It would be a great starter box.

Like this. Mine is olive green, and has led a rough life. It was cheap though, and empty when I got it. I`d like to fix it up at some point.

nice score. maybe do a cheap rattle can paint job and use it as a junkyard box
