Hey Guys,

As you can see I'm new here. I came here to get some ideas as I am building my very first garage. It is 30' deep and 40' long with a 12' ceiling. Kinda funny, so many people in Alaska wish they had a garage where we get over 7 months of snow and most the folks in warmer climates have garages that are full of everything except what a garage is intended for. In my case, my garage will go to good use. I'm a car guy and have been working and rebuilding cars in my dirt driveway and borrowed shops. I re did all the frame rails, torque boxes and body panels on my 68 mustang in my driveway. Man what I would have done for a nice garage! Well, I finally buckled down and decided after living here in Alaska for almost 23 years, it is time.
I started with a budget of roughly 27K. After almost 3 months and all of my money I am about 60%+ done. Tomorrow I can call her 70% because it will be wired. A few good buddies have been helping me and will also be here tomorrow to help drill holes and pull wire. After that I will hang my overhead doors, which I already have. Then insulation and vapor barrier. I can then put the heat to her before snow flies. I will probably sheetrock through the winter. The only thing I hired out is the footing and stem walls. That was a big hit at a little more than 1/3rd of my budget. All the rest was good friends helping and the costs below. I am a very lucky guy.

My expenses so far have been:

Excavation, footings and stem walls-$10,500
Dirt that I had to buy- $1,300
Lumber package including trusses- $11,500
Extra trips to Lowes and Home Depot- approx $700
Paint-$450
Electrical- $1000
Wife- the rest.

Here are some pics. If you want to see more, look at my photobucket page.

The Day the excavator showed up. I jumped in it and pulled some sona tubes I had put into the ground several years ago. I was going to build a big car port but never did.

Here are more pics. I held off on the slab due to my budget. I will pour concrete next spring. This will also insure the ground will have settled. There is only two kinds of concrete in Alaska. Concrete thats going to crack and concrete that is already cracked.

Friday Evening, we cut studs and headers. Saturday we started framing.

The 40' back wall was the first to stand. Boy was that sucker heavy.

Second wall. Notice the door header:dunno: We got a little carried away when we nailed the window headers. We figured it didn't matter since it's not a bearing wall and theoretically, there is a header there for the door, it just a little high.

Trusses were delivered the following Tuesday. The Saturday after that I swung them in with a boom lift. With me on the lift, my buddy on a scaffold in the middle, and two more buddies on either side it took us about 3-4 hours to get them stacked.
First truss.

During the week I stocked the roof with the three tab. Thank goodness for that boom lift!

It rained all the next weekend but the guys came out the following week to roof.

Windows and trim to follow.
Sideview9-5-122_zpsf81e1b61.jpg

I couldn't decide what I wanted to trim the garage doors with. I finally settled with some 3" trim I ripped in half and rounded with my router.

Two weekends ago-paint! A friend owed me some money so he sprayed the garage. Of course I had to buy the paint. I used a paint called "flood" sold at Rhodda. I covered the T1-11 very nicely. It's an emulsion paint that has water base and oil base paint mixed.

Here's the trim. I'm painting it during the week after work. It's a color the wife picked. It's a burgundy color and darkened a little more after it dried.

That was last week. This week it rained and rained and rained!!! I did brace the trusses on down days and re compacted the inside in preparation for the scissor lift we will be using while we wire the garage. I'll keep the pics coming as things progress.

Thanks to my buddies for all the help.

Great job on the build so far!

Nice color choice, I like the green. Do you have any plans to paint the house to match?

Looks like a great crew, It's always nice to have friends who are willing to help out.

Congrats on your build. Once you start working inside that garage you will never know how you did it without one. Good group of buddies you have there!

Thanks guys. I plan on painting the house to match if it'll stop raining. My 68 is not a CS. It started out as a rust bucket and now 6 years later it's a show car. Actually started winning trophies about three years ago. My car page is here http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2981459/1968-ford-mustang
I lost much of my build pictures when putfile.com went under. This last spring I purchased a 2010 GT500 so this garage is much needed.
Jerry, Jeff and another friend Brandon (the electrician) came over this morning. We put a pretty good dent in her. We got the service run from the house and started wiring the panel. Jerry and Jeff nailed boxes, drilled holes, and pulled wire all day. So far I have 27 outlets, that includes the 4 outside and not the overhead head opener boxes. I drilled and installed boxes for 4 lights out front, one in the back, and one at each end. I ran some 8/3 for the 220 in two locations. I will also run the 8/3 for a 30 amp compressor outlets as well. I hope to finish her up tomorrow but we'll see.

Great shop! I'll be following your progress. My pops left me his '65 fastback when he passed away, so it'll finally get some cover once my shop is done also.
Nice collection of cars!
Cheers!
PS: what pitch roof do you have on the shop?? 4:12??

Yes, the last door is 10'. I wanted a big door just in case. I chose the green and wanted cream trim but the wife won with the burgundy. Thanks for the comments. I will post some door pics in a moment.

Here are my doors. I have never installed or even owned an overhead door. I got ahold of some extra track to convert these doors to high lift. I looked at every door I came across in the last two weeks. I also did some research online. I'm sure I'll be doing some tweaking once I get the springs and openers mounted. It is very time consuming but easy. I bought these doors second hand and didn't have any directions.

Thanks Don. The concrete comes next spring after the snow melts. It wasn't in my budget right now. I had to make sure I it was closed in and heated before the snow flies. It's getting close thought. I woke Saturday to a snow covered yard! Of course it melted but give it another month and it'll stick.
I checked out your build Don. I would classify your shop as a warehouse! Beautiful 69 too! What part of CA are you from? I was born in Whittier and grew up in Rowland Heights. I moved to AK in 1990 and never wanted to go back.

For not knowing anything about overhead doors, it looks good.
I have two 10' tall 12' wide doors with 12'6" ceilings. Wish I had 12' tall doors for a motorhome possibly.

Thanks akdiesel. I built the garage and put a 10' in for re-sale someday. I figured it would make it more desirable if I ever decided to sale. A nice garage could be the tipping point.

It looks great Mike, I like the colors too. Once the house is painted, will that get done before the snow flies, it'll all flow nicely.

I notice alot of moss growing the the backside of the roof. Does this create any problems with the life of the shingles or roof ? Do you ever clean it off or how do you clean it off ?

Great Build, thanks for sharing the process. I learn a few new things each time I look at someones build and your build is no exception.

1. You reminded me to do a lot of extra wiring up high for all the collectable neon signage you'll want on those empty walls. ;) I've done a few electrical jobs and its one of the best times to think about the space and how to fill it up.
2. The soffit "plugs" between the trusses with ventilation holes; those are shipped as part of the kit that way?

Subscribed... looking forward to how things shape up inside the garage.

Great job on the build, always good to have a friends for jobs like that, makes it more fun as your working on it. You talked about a budget early in your postings that's the worst part staying in your budget.

Hello Eric,
The moss is just starting to lift the shingles. I have never cleaned it but plan on doing so. If you noticed, I added a zinc strip to the back side of the garage. It's crazy, the moss last year was very minimal but it took off this year.

It looks great Mike, I like the colors too. Once the house is painted, will that get done before the snow flies, it'll all flow nicely.

Capstone,
The bird blocks were purchased separately. It's much easier to buy them to buy the lumber, drill the holes, and staple screen over the holes.

Ha Ha, I blew the planned budget last month. I just purchased extra wire (ouch!!). I can't believe how fast it's going up. I also just purchased all of my insulation last weekend. I am going to call around for prices on rock tomorrow.

I also got my doors. I went with the fiberglass.

Don,
Yes, Walnut Valley Autobody. I attended Mt. SAC just after high school. My Dad was captain of Station 146 in Walnut before he passed in 1996. He is dearly missed. If you ever get up here again look me up.

Just in time for insulation. Looks great, and those shop lights will do the job great.
We have fiberglass doors for the house and love them but take some precautions. They will warp. Both tops and bottoms have bowed slightly inward, mainly due to air leaks (tough to keep good seals year round up here). Did some research and they say to seal the tops and bottoms if not already done, since they are wood framed fiberglass.

Been a little busy this last few weeks. I've been insulating the lid a few hours everyday after work. As of today, I'm 98% done and need to run some bell wire. After the wire is run I can finish. I installed another fiberglass door yesterday. And, I received my openers. I will get my sheet rock tomorrow, $1400!! Damn.

Yes, sorry for the lack of updates. The only thing I have not done is trimming the inside man doors. I have been filling the garage will tools and goodies. Most of my pictures were put on my photo bucket site: http://s322.photobucket.com/user/valleyfirearms/library/?sort=3&page=1

After the insulation, came the sheetrock. Thanks to my buddy Jer-Bear we knocked that out in several days. 12' ers on the lid would have been difficult without the Bear.
