Hi everyone, So I've decided after owning my first house for a year, that I'd post pics of my garage project.
Here's the house.

First order of business was to get rid of this behemoth that the previous owner left me with
IMG_20131123_090534.jpg

Here's what I replaced it with- mk1 turbo diesel! :)
IMG_20131116_141224.jpg

Then after a hellish first winter in my first house and adding a couple new members to the family- on to the inside of the garage.

So to start,
When I bought the house, it was for sale by owner and the old man left EVERYTHING... including milk and eggs in the fridge and clothes in the closet.
So the garage was packed with ****... some good, some trash.
IMG_20140219_072541.jpg

Starting to clean it out... It's all gotta go!

I got a TON of 5/8 sheetrock for free, so time to insulate before that goes up!
The garage was also wired with and spliced with electrical tape with extension cords everywhere... its a wonder it didn't burn down. So also time to rewire the entire place the right way.
IMG_20140413_163545.jpg

IMG_20140416_211334.jpg

Half of the sheetrock I got was also actually tile backer... so the bottom 4' of board is waterproof! :)

Oh yeah, installed the lift to get it out of the weather sitting out on the trailer.
Cheap used lift, but basically brand new and $600 was reasonable enough.
IMG_20140426_133045.jpg

It was also a really tight fit... the top cross beam is up inside the trusses.
IMG_20140426_203442.jpg

Its just too bad that I can't make the room to use it yet!

The boards paralleling the cross beam of the lift aren't structural, it was actually a leg that would swing down to support a similar beam across the other side of the garage for hoisting.... I've taken that all out.

Continuing with the walls... old workbenches got torn down
IMG_20140501_215625.jpg

More trash to get rid of :(

Oak top bench gets a vanity underneath with the drawers hacked out to make a nice little kennel for Riley.

Wow, can't believe that guy left you everything! I would have loved to find a boat in the garage of a house I just bought!

Great work so far, and very jealous of your $600 lift.

Changed the clutch, brakes, and steering rack

Changed the oil: She gushes everywhere, be careful.
I could actually stand up under this too, and I'm 5'11

Now the lemons car is in the garage getting an engine swap, since the old engine was blown.
What a mess that's making

Some things he left were great, but it was many many trips to the dump as well.
The boat had been neglected for years and years after having blown a head gasket or overheated by running without water. It had a chevy 350 in it, but the interior needed a TON of work, which I was not willing to do. The trailer was in OK shape. When I tried selling the whole thing I got nothing.... so it went away for free.... oh well

Pretty cool transformation so far.. nice lift. I wish I had the room. If and when I move that will be on my list for my next garage.

The old dude leaving everything is nice in some ways.. but damn hauling off all the **** is a pain.

I agree, wish my place came with a boat!

The drywall/tile backer really helps with lighting and heat and overall appearance. Any thoughts of doing the overhead where possible?

Yes, once all the walls were boarded up, it was so much brighter in there!
Then I went and bought 8 fluorescent lights to replace the 3 or 4 old ones that were there, and its awesome how bright it is.

I will be insulating and boarding the ceiling, but I'm not sure if I'll be doing that before winter comes along. Too bad that basically means I can't heat the place this winter.

The dog photos are hilarious, especially the one on the ladder. Crack me up. :D Looks like you've got some great space to work with there.

So the guy left all that stuff- is that even legal to do that? I just sold a house and my agent was adamant about getting every little stupid thing out of the place....

I think being for sale by owner had a lot to do with it, but either way, no one warned me against it. If I had the choice of either having the place empty, or all that stuff again I'm not sure what I'd choose. But as a first home, it was a blessing as far as yard tools (snow blower, chain saws etc), kitchen tools (heavy duty mixer etc), tools for everything really. Bed frames, desks, even large appliances. If my fiance and I had to buy all that stuff to move in, it would have been a lot harder than throwing out what we had to.

A couple new additions:
Had this laying around, so just got a mount and antenna.

20141011_204244.jpg

Some more free cabinets too... I have another angled piece I'll be putting next to cabinet on the far left. They are a little off color, but the price was right.

Oh, and got the cabrio running this weekend!
BUT the replacement engine is pouring out white smoke.... uh oh
maybe it's leftover crapola in the exhaust from blown engine??? Lets all hope and pray for that!

First I love the home. It is a great looking place. The garage is just super, with it's size and ceiling height. You have a great place and looks like your going to use it very well.
Thanks for posting, I really enjoyed seeing it. I will look forward to more photos of the entire place.

Best Regards
Herb Spencer

So since the vise should be mounted at least this far out.....

uploadfromtaptalk1425254946821.jpg

Any ideas how to bolt it down with what I have under it?

Get a plate of 3/16 ~ 1/4 inch mild steel and make a base for the vise. Bolt the vise to the plate, extend the vise out as far from the bench edge as you like and then bolt the plate to the bench.
