Floor to unfinished ceiling is 11'3". The lift cross member is up inside the truss, but I can still lift most cars up as high as the lift can go. Still need to re-run the safety stop cable before I crunch something. I'm about 5'10.5 and I can stand up under the center of most cars, but not where the suspension droops down

I thought of the heavy plate idea but was imagining about 1/2".... Is that crazy overkill? 1/4" would be much cheaper!
Or should I go hitch mount style?
or this? http://www.amazon.com/Miller-Electric-300612-Mount-Plate/dp/B004HF0JW8/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&qid=1425310071&sr=8-11&keywords=vise+plate

Mine is set on a general purpose bench similar to yours, except I don't have a cool SS top. I'll post a picture this evening.
Funny, I actually have the Miller welding table shown in the Amazon pic. The table is great as a welding surface but the vise mount would not be suitable for heavy work - too light. For holding items to be welded or for grinding it would work fine.

Just ordered a plate for bolting down the vise.
Tonight I installed a couple exterior lights...
My fingers are falling off... I've had enough winter

Garage looks great! I wish I had the headroom that you do. Quick question about your "Oak workbench top". How did you hold the boards together? Pocket screws? Glue? Dowels? I am building one out of Cherry right now and have not decided on how to hold all three boards together.

Pocket screws are probably your best/easiest bet if you have the jig. I built a countertop using liquid nails and pocket screws and it worked out alright.

My father has a jointer and dowel jig, so I used that with wood glue... Still took a lot of planing, filling and sanding after... And I'm not totally happy with the result... MAKE SURE YOUR BOARDS ARE DRY AS A BONE FIRST

Managed to be able to squeeze the cars into the garage for snowstorms this winter... but brings any progress on, or work in garage to a halt...

So I guess I had the base spun around wrong in the previous vise photos... Turns out I was able to mount it with 6" lags in the front and bolted it in the back.
