Nice start. You asked about dropping the ceiling. Are you planning to finish the whole garage? If so, I would almost dry wall up to those braces and around them. Then paint it all the same color and mud the dry wall to the wood. It would just add a few features in your ceiling :)

No reason to lose a few inches in ceiling height or spend any more money than you need to.

Also, it looks like you are a car detailer, or just a perfectionist when it comes to yours :)

Thanks create I plan on dry walling the whole thing. The rest of the house was remodeled so I want the garage to be done to make it look cleaner. My wife is cool with me finishing it so maybe soon. I like your idea of just going up and around and painting thanks. I just to do some cars at my old apt complex before they banned us to wash there now I just take care of my cars. I do it as a hobby

RANDO,

That cross brace across the rafters looks like something that was placed there during original framing for the trusses until the roof was on and sheated. You might ask a good framer or carpenter to take a look, it may be that it should have been placed on the top side of the rafters in the attic area. If so, that will make your ceiling rafters flat and drywall installation much easier.

Your space will look like a million bucks when drywalled and painted. When you get a chance paint that back wall and you will see how bright the place will get real quick like.

Keep us posted and good luck.

I know that rules in California are different than in the rest of the world. LOL!!!! I'd see about taking the cross bracing out. Once drywall is up, it in itself will keep a garage from racking. How do they have bracing in the rest of the house or if the garage is attached, at the opposite end of the house? I would not want to drop the ceiling below it, nor would I want it sticking out from the new drywall.

Ditto!!! I too think someone was lazy and didn't remove the bracing when the job was done.

If it is needed I see no reason why it can't be put on top of the rafters. And or drywall will do the same job as the bracing.

Isn't the extra bracing for earthquakes, They have alot of this in the building code in ca. It may not be a good idea to remove this as it looks like the cross brace also is built into the top plates.

I talked to my neighbors that have lived her for 30 plus and they said that all the garage around here are like that. The house was built in 64 and since we are so close to the the marine base and have some earthquakes. The houses uses to take a beating and start cracking and it was there way of beefing it up and help the house from racking and they have never had a problem. No one has a finished garage its just the walls im going to ask a builder friend and see what he suggest
