Ok blasphemy aside...that's a hell of a lot of light under there. Gonna be really nice for working under there.

...and on the 7th day he rested. It makes working under the loft so much better. I initially hung the lights nearest the door because I was going to put cabinets on the back wall. I may move them to the middle later if I totally abandon the cabinet idea.

Did you raise the loft up? Looks differentnow from first pics.

Nope. Same place it's been since I built it. Maybe the angle on the shot made it look different.

Not much time to work today, but I completed the first half cabinet and made another. Moved them up higher to clear my head and decided to start at the end with the loft. I'll make two more and then raise the 3 larger ones near the door to match.



While I was at HD picking up supplies I got a couple of Rubbermaid totes and did a little loft organizing.

I did some socket organizing tonight. Previously all of them were just rolling around in there and it made it impossible to find what I needed. The Craftsman foam seemed outrageously expensive for what it is. I grabbed a set of 4 foam floor tiles at Home Depot and cut them to fit.

Good work on loft and good job on sockets. I have a idea of how to fit a lot of sockets in one drawer if need more space at some point.

Creative use for those tiles. Those things are soo useful. I had some in my garage for flooring in the entrance way, my wife used them for workouts and i bought some for a friend of mine for a play room for his child. They are also great for a knee cushion when working on the car.

Made some more progress. First step was bringing the Audi back to life, so I could get it out of the garage.

I found a table saw on craigslist for $60. It's small, but a big improvement over the circular saw and straightedge method.



The new problem is what to do with the base. The saw is light enough that it fits nicely up in the loft, but the base is another matter. Originally I thought I could just hang it on the wall, but it sticks out too far. Has anyone built/seen a good folding stand other than saw horses?

With my new table saw I was able to make 2.75 more cabinets. I screwed up one of the measurements for the last one and didn't have any more material.




The one over the workbench is only 8" deep, so as not to intrude on head space while at the bench. I think I'll make one for next to it.

I also moved the ladder to a vertical hanging position. I like it a lot better.

So I found this stand made by Skill that would fit my needs perfectly.



The only problem is it's no longer available.

I'm thinking of building something similar from 80/20 aluminum using linear bearings for the fence. What say ye?

I never against building a custom piece. I do it all the time but that's if nothing fits my idea. The workmate are easy to find at yard sales. Mine is old one someone tossed out cause top where shot. I replaced tops and made insert to make full top. I use it all the time.

I got some more work done today. I picked up some wiremold at Home Depot and ran outlets down to the workbench. I was going to do the same for the lights under the loft, but forgot to get another starter box. Feels so much better to not have the orange extension cord hanging from the ceiling.




I think I've also decided to use the half height cabinet below the loft, above the workbench. I'll make one more short one and another tall one to finish off the space above the bench. I moved the retractable cord and am much happier with the current location. I'll need to relocate the radio, but that's no big deal.

Current debate is where to mount the pegboard. Some idiot decided to put outlets above the workbench where the pegboard should go.

The space above is reserved for two more cabinets. I don't need a lot of peg space. Just for some small stuff that gets used frequently so I don't have to keep pulling it out of cabinets/drawers.

I decided to just go for it and put it up. There is very little money invested and if I decide that I don't like it later, I'll just take it down.



For hooks, I'm thinking of using these. Anyone had success or failure with them? Also open to other suggestions.

Also worked on getting the workmate and snow shovel off of the floor, but forgot to get another hook for the broom/dust pan.

Glad it worked out. That model is good. Had 2 of them at one point in time until I found a old ones from when they first came out. I gave them away cause didnt cause that old is strong but heavy.

I looked at buying cabinets before building them and couldn't find any that were affordable and I liked. All of the "cheap" upper kitchen cabinets are made of particle board and are still $40-50. Each sheet of the 3/4" maple plywood can make 3 cabinets for $40.

I think I'm finally done building cabinets for the garage today. I may still make some more shelves, but I can add those later.

I hear you. I found out the same thing myself. I ended up swinging for some nice welded steel cabinets. But boy are they spendy! I think you did a fantastic job with your cabinets

Thanks. They will look a lot better once I paint them and get the doors on.

I went to a garage sale on Saturday and had a pretty good score. Got it all for $20. The deadblow is made by Snap-On.


In the mean time, my wall hooks from Talon Hooks arrived. I'm pretty happy with how they work. The hooks stay firmly planted while hanging and removing tools. Of course I had to get some stuff hung up. I'm not sure that it will stay this way, but it's a start.



The last piece to arrive today was the Ridgid Store-n-Go shop vac that I ordered from HD. I used it a little just to test it out and seems to work well. The biggest selling point for me was the fact that it is mounted on the wall and not taking up additional floor space. It's primary use will be for vacuuming out cars, etc. It's not really big enough to use as any sort of dust collector.



Kind of hard to get a picture of it with the car in the garage. I'll take a better one later.

One more update for tonight. I capitalized on Sears.com heavily discounting some of the "Industrial" line of sockets and wrenches to add to my set. They arrived tonight and I spent a few minutes getting them into the drawers.

I don't really ever use SAE wrenches or sockets as most of the work I do is on cars.

Looking great in there. Sweet score on the shop vac, definitely sounds like you bought it with a plan which is very important with a single. I remember buying my vac, fridge and compressor, all had very tight parameters in terms of the max size they could be.

Thanks. I still need to pull everything out of the loft to reorganize it. There is a lot of stuff up there that needed a place to be during the move. For the pocket holes, I just using the basic Kreg Jig. I'm really happy with it.

I wouldn't say that there is a lot of room to maneuver, but there is "enough". It's much more cramped when I pull my wife's Subaru OBW in to do work on it.
