After reading a post on CL here in chicago for a "garage sale" that boasted tons of tools i got up and headed out to the middle of the county in custard park, il (next to wilmington and they share a zipcode) i come across a barn/garage FULL of mostly USA tools and electrical stuff, apparently the guy was an electritian. his wife and her son (as the man himself had passed away) were running the sale, lady sold the house and it all had to go... i think i got a good deal for $60

Nice deal! You probably broke even on that regulator. That means the rest of it was free ;)

hahaha hey her son (mid 40's) said make an offer... we went back and forth of 2 piles (being 2 different transactions) and thats what we came too. i have a feeling he grabbed the better non rusted stuff n the SO odds n ends i got were parts of sets he prolly took out before the sale started.

im thinking i may spraypaint the holesaws so they dont rust, they are the heavy guage steel ones that thread on an arbor. also gonna primer and paint the umpteen ridgid pipe wrenches.

for what its worth i did feel guity at first but its a lot of rusted **** that needs a lot of work before i can sell or use it

Holy COW, man! You did GREAT!!!

Like just about everyone else here, I need some sockets and wrenches to fill in holes in sets I am working on. When you get a list of what you've got, let us know.

Today I went to a farm auction with a lot of tools, and bought about a pickup load myself. So now I must sort out the trash and unwanted junk, and then see where I am with the sets I am trying to fill. Then I can check with you to see if you have the pieces I need.

GREAT HAUL for just $60!!!!:thumbup:

UPDATE... the extreemly rusted sockets in the rusted box (set with speeders at right rear corner of table) some are marked BOG CHICAGO anyone every here of them? all sizes appear to be had stamped into socket, and a knurled band on the circumference. i had some similar style sockets (that were hex/allen drive) with no name that i tried the vinegar bath on and the vinegar ate the finish so im a bit scared to try that, wd40 on a rag cleaned a bit off a few

Sure, I've heard of BOG. It's a very old brand. I would like to see a list of what BOG-marked tools you have. Send me a PM when you get time.

Thanks, and GREAT HAUL!!

After 2-3 days now in the vinegar ive cleaned and started sorting the sockets and hole saws. the vise grips were so rusted the chrome/chrome like finish has come off most of it. any ideas on refinishing the visegrips? ive heard black oxide or rustoleum but what do you think it better practically? if i get some black oxide i may do the adjustables and pipewrenches the same way but its a bit expensize to buy from what ive seen.

Cleaning was interesting, it appears the vinegar eats some of the older "chrome" style coatings. i have a rough surface on some things now. i oiled some with the snap on lube i have, wire brushed a few and shot a few with flat black rustoleoum to see what i like. the nice thing is the rust didnt destroy the tool just in most cases the finish.
