I would recommend starting with metric. MOST parts on engines are metric... generally. There are always exceptions. But, I have a well stocked metric selection and just recently went back and unloaded my HF **** for Cman USA stuff in SAE. It took me a while - I didn't need anything SAE for a while.

I'd recommend their long profile wrenches instead of their standard length if you're gonna be buying wrenches. There's a lot of times when working on cars where you'll appreciate the long reach and the extra leverage. Also on the small engines, depending on their age, they can be either metric or standard.

Congrats! I bought my SO rats new too. It was a beautiful day. Here's a tip: The classifieds on this site....or....search Ebay: Snap On SOEXM. Good Luck!

I would say stay with the standard length SO's. They're already longer than regular wrenches.

I'd suggest looking for a nice used metric set to start. Then grab some single SAE ones for the sizes you seem to run into most. Snap-On SAE wrenches are easy to find on eBay for $5-$10 for the smaller (under 1") sizes.

Snap-On is getting pickier about warrantying tools that you didn't buy from the truck, but unless you're using them to make a living, it's hard to stomach the cost of new ones and they're pretty damn hard to break.

If you buy from a truck, always check for the used parts. Most of the time he takes tools on in trade for newer or another kind, and he sells them for a fraction of the cost new, but the same warranty. I started with a 88 tooth 1/4 drive flex head ratchet. I now have all of my ratchets in flex head 88 tooth along with fixed head. They are amazing and i stick by snap on just because of the quality those showed me. Plus the extra teeth are amazing for foreign cars with the really tight spaces.

Nice ratchets. How do you like the locking flex head so far? I have a set of Snap-on non-flankdrive 10-19mm combos and they are really really really nice to look at and to use.

i love it i thought it was a good buy. ever sense my company started using snap-on tools I've been hooked because i like the quality and feel and the ratchet is so smooth. look forward to buying more stuff off the truck in weeks and months to come as i build my tool collection. now I'm trying to decide what ratchet to buy next think ill go with soft handle 1/2inch drive with a full pollish 3/8 drive thats my next 2 ratchets. and ill get a set of wrenches 10mm to 19mm

Has anyone else had this happen? Is it within the scope of their warranty policy to deny warranty if you didn't buy it from the truck, or is it a rogue salesman here or there being uncooperative?

You will love that locking flex ratchet, only thing that could be improved is a metal lock button instead of plastic

Twincam- The new locking flex and locking flex rebuild kits have a steel locking button now, need to upgrade mine. My favorite out of the 3/8'' lineup.

The simple answer is yes, yes and yes. They state in their warranty info:

"Snap-on warrants to Customers who purchase Product from authorized Snap-on distribution channels for use in their profession that Snap-on® brand Products and Blue-Point® brand Products will be free from defects in workmanship and materials for a duration described in each Product's warranty code."

"The following information will be required with the customer’s warranty request: (1) date and proof of purchase, (2) where customer purchased the product, (3) full name, (4) shipping address, (5) phone number, (6) e-mail address, (7) item number(s) or approximate weight of return package. Warranty requests that do not include all of the required information will not be processed."

Snap On still makes great products, and if you have/maintain a decent relationship with your rep. you won't have any problems.

Is this a very recent change? I just rebuilt a FHX80 locking flex 4 weeks ago and they sent me a rebuild kit with a plastic button

If they did change it I'll gladly buy a kit with a metal button :)

Here's a photo, my dealer didn't have a rebuild kit in stock with the metal button in stock (surprise, surprise), but here is a photo of the new style installed:
