Just picked this up today. All matching day code, i think its 1929???

Its seen alot of use. Im not sure if i'm motivated enough to restore it, specially the box. I might just to try to sell it, but its keeping me entertained for the time being.

Read up on the rust removal threads and clear coat paint them afterwards, if not just oil coating to prevent further rust. The box requires a finer touch to not destroy flavor while preventing complete rust out. Ask around on this board and someone will have the sockets you are missing, probably with the correct date code.

Dont do anything to these tools until Snapmom chimes in on this thread. She can give you some advice as to the best way to retain the value of the tools.

Its looks like a 5/8 dr set from about 1928-1931. The rat is 1929. the box is 29-31. There are threads on cleaning the tools. evaporust, etc. You can clean the box by spraying it with a good pent. oil, then with 0000 steelwool remove the rust, this may time several coats, clean the the dirty oil between cleanings with rags, then on the final oil spray just wipe it down and leave a good coat of oil on the box.

PS: if the box has no paint left on it, bead it down and repaint with a low gloss black paint.

Thanks for the input. Blasting it and painting would certainly by easy enough. The box has so many dents in it i would have to shrink it in 30 spot to get it straight. I've been meaning to pick up some evapo-rust for some other things anyway, so i might give that a try.

The interesting thing about this box is that the "Snap-On Chicago" was made on both sides of the handle. Some have it to the left of the handle, like yours, some to the right. Mine has it on the right of the handle.

Nice find, do the sockets have a crosshatch knurled band around the center, or a band of straight lines toward the drive end of the socket walls?
