My first stab at woodworking

Go easy on me, let me first say that I have only posted a few times on the site, been drooling for a while now though.

I am a gearhead at heart but decided to take a stab at woodworking.

I made a pirate treasure chest for my 3 and 5 year old kiddos' birthday party. I only used but-joints, nothing fancy considering all I had to work with was a drill and circular saw. For the top, they are individual slats of cheapo 1x2 whiteboard I picked up from Lowes. I used a ratchet strap to hold them in place while it dried. I used small chain to hold the lid from opening all the way and used brass hardware. I recessed the 2 lid hinges. I wanted a very dark stain, so I was at lowed and bought ebony minwax, little did I know (being a noob woodworker), ebony actually stains BLACK. so I had some serious sanding to do. I think the finished project turned out pretty well and I was satisfied as the kids eyes lit up when they pulled their presents out of a treasure chest.

The second one is a bench I made my wife for make-up Mothers Day as I was on a field exercise when the real thing happened. I had the kids help me as much as I could (keeping them away from sharp blades obviously). I just used 4x4 for the legs (a PITA to cut with a small 18v circular saw) and used 1x4 for the seat slats. I used a jig saw to cut out the supports for the seat slats. I used a semi-transparent stain just to seal it as it will sit on the front porch. She was very excited and loved her new garden bench.

Thanks man, I did also have an 18v jig saw but whose counting. I got a Porter Cable combo kit from Lowes for around $89 bucks. I am going to continue to do some trial and error here and there but we'll see where it goes, woodworking is more of a secondary hobby to family and cars.

as someone who love to do woodworking, i wanted to say looks great for your 1st projects!

You seem to have natural tallent. I do all my woodworking with just 2 more tools than u have. I have a cheap table saw (99.00 ryobi) and a router(pattern bit, and flush trim bits are awesome)...with some careful planning i'm able to build all kinds of things.

Nice work. You are nailing down the basics which will serve you well as you expand into other techniques. Remember that you can get killer deals on clist for tools. These days, I don't pay more than a 1/4 of cost for a power tool, and even less if it requires some refurb.

Nice job on the projects. With the pirate's chest - I do recommend you purchase a safety hinge for the lid. They make them specifically for toy-box like projects so the lid won't slam shut on small fingers.

nice job! its amazing what cam be done with some creativity, patience, some practice and only a circular saw and jigsaw for woodworking. Back when I had more time on my hands I would pump out all sorts of custom speaker boxes with only a circular saw and a jig-saw. Everyone brought their stuff to me cause they thought I had some bad *** table saw and equipment to make clean looking stuff, nope just a 20yo circular saw and a $30 b&d jigsaw.

Looking good!

You would be amazed what can be done on the cheap. My brother and I used to build lots of stuff to sell @ craft shows(25 years ago). We started with just a circ saw and router. We spent all the money buying woodworking tools:D

My most used woodworking tools by far are the table saw and router----in case you are looking to expand:bounce:

Great work on some cool projects.

I second the safety hinges or similar as I built a toy box for my kids (keyword "kids") and the lid falling wasn't the issue, it was one of the boys typically trying to close the box while the other wanted something in it...lol...and being pirates booty should only make that problem more likely. ;)

A table saw and router/router table would be great wishlist items as already mentioned, and all the tools you acquire will likely see great use on projects with your children as they get older as you seem like that type of Dad.

Thanks for sharing.

Very nice! Check out the woodshop on the base where you are at. They usually have nice equipment. Its also amazing what you can make out of an old pallet. Free wood is the best. And thank you for your service!

I snag free work from base all the time. I usually take the long way home to see what I can salvage from the dumpsters and whatnot. I would love to check out the woodshop on base but I am getting discharged on my birthday next month. Thanks for the praise though man, and thank you for paying my check:beer:

I get into trouble everytime I go into Lowes. I see I want I cry on my way out when I can't afford anything. My next woodworking tools are going to be a table saw, a miter saw, and a scroll saw, in that order. I want to get into making my own work cabinets for the garage. Craigslist it is as far as buying new equipment
