Yeah, I like that pic, both because of the screw drivers but also the pliers rack, which is one of the next projects. Plans are to put it on the opposing door.

Here's a pic of the rack that inspired mine. I really liked how he relieved the sides so you could see which type you're grabbing. I considered doing that to the top layer but then I got bummed because it doesn't work for the bottom later which is the majority of pieces. I also thought the graduated angles was a neat touch too.

Wow. No update since March.
I wish it was because I was so busy in the garage, but it's more like life. Seems like June and a July only lasted 5 minutes each anyway.
Glad to say lots of life and living going on, just not a ton of garage life.

In June we bought a golf cart off the neighbors across the street. Storing it required a bit of a reconfig of the shop side of the garage, but I think it's opened things up a little better.

It's made for some fun cruising around the neighborhood and even the course even though we don't belong to the club. I like to search the empty lots for errant golf balls. Lol

One "life" photo from "the summer vacay" just for grins.

And an actual garage time project that got me thinking about updating the thread.
Built ins for the playroom upstairs.

Some of the "life" that went on this summer was the passing of my mom at 82 years old this July. As a result, my brother and I are tasked with the "unpacking" of 50 plus years of life in our parents home. We haven't had a lot of time there yet but it's produced a lot of gems for me.

One of them from this weekend is this copy of the ninety edition of "Dykes automotive encyclopedia" that belonged to my paternal great great uncle. Copyright 1919.

As much of an intensive pain in the *** this house cleaning will be, I'm oddly looking forward to finding more stuff like this. And eventually gaining some closure.

Sorry to hear about your Mom Terra. Look forward to all the cool things you find from your family's past. The upstairs built ins look good.

Man, I miss this place. I've been eeking along, checking in a on few threads every other day or so.

Motivation is so hit and miss lately.
Pair that with actually getting time to be in the garage and it makes things really tough.

I managed to find something that helped a little though. Going back and reading my own thread. Odd how sometimes you can loose perspective when you're in the weeds.

<Shakes head to clear things out>
So!
The little I've managed to keep rolling...

This happened, which is a motivator!

My original intent was to find some cool vintage commercial garage cabinet to go with my NAPA piece that I could actually fit my mechanic stuff in. Even found a cool raybestos cabinet on eBay that had some sliding drawers, but couldn't make it happen.
Every time I walked by the "big Milwaukee things" at Home Depot, I would feel something stir, but always told myself "NO! I don't want one!"
Well, I eventually gave up that ghost on the Raybestos piece, and having worked at HD in the past, I started doing some research.

The retail price on the combo is $798, which felt steep. I knew when they came out, there were about $200 less.
I went to the local Depot and talked to the manager and low and behold, because the specific display at my store was older, it was entered in at the older originally lower price. God bless loop holes.
Long story short, I got a new combo, still in the box for $598 and tax!!!

Rearranged the video game and some of the other stuff in the corner and it fits pretty nicely.

View media item 87828

Not that the company has anything in common with who they were back then, but it's kinda cool that my dad worked for Milwaukee as a sales rep back in the day (60's). I still have and use a couple of his old corded drills. They're monsters!

It's felt good to pare things down as I've filled the drawers and some things fit better than I imagined.
The wide middle drawer allowed me to fit all three of my moulded craftsman socket trays with a little room to spare.

View media item 87835
The bottom two larger drawers have 200lbs weight ratings which has allowed me to pull some things down out of the uppers and still keep them in their cases.

As for the built-ins in the play room, I've been slogging along on them too.

The photo with the boy (son or grandson) painting with the roller is really great.

My Mom passed in July also at age 84. She was not enjoying her time the last couple years so this is best for her I feel.

Wasfast and Finally - thanks. I always try to document when the boys help, so they'll remember and believe me later lol.

So, you may or may not have noticed, in the pulled back shot of the built-ins that there's an odd, big *** panel on the wall behind them. The room that these are being built for is a bonus room above the garage and the walls are partially vaulted. The panel is an access to the space behind the wall. Right in the middle (in a general sense) of the built ins. Like it couldn't be in a more awkward location.

I thought "no problem, I'll just relieve the back of the cabinets/counter top/book shelf in that area." Apparently in my initial thoughts, this was gonna be simple. Turns out I've had to develope a bit of a work around to make it work the way I think it should.

I relieved the side and back of the left cabinet cause that seemed like as good a place as any to start.

View media item 87854
View media item 87855
But upon looking at how I wanted to enclose the back of the cabinet with hardboard, I needed some way to support a fairly sizeable run on the side.

So I took the top part I'd cut away and put a sing pocket screw in it to attach it above the shelf and found a second piece and cut it to length and attached it with a pocket screw, top and bottom.

View media item 87849
And then I ran a stringer to the far end along the top to connect to the side and support the top of the back.

View media item 87850
I should have left the hardboard a little longer in the widest dimension, but over all I had enough room to make glue and pin nails work.

View media item 87851
I think it turned out ok. We'll see how well or matches up here in a bit. I sure hope everything lines up right and I didn't miss a dimension or something! 😐

PS posting about this is keeping me motivated. Thanks guys!
Gonna try and get some sanding done so I can prime when it warms up this afternoon.

I managed to get some stuff done yesterday.
After asking on the board about spraying Zinsser shellac primer through an HVLP, I decided to give it try.

Strait out of the can. No thinner/reducer. 20 lbs. of pressure through a cheaper porter cable gun.

So much better than rolling.
Plenty of ventilation, and a little over spray on the drive. Sure beats overspray all over everything in the garage.

Two of the three bases, two counter tops and I'd already rolled the two upper book shelves. Stuff dried quick enough that I managed to hit them with the palm sander with some 320. I was hesitant that I'd burn through the primer really easily but it wasn't bad and I was set up to hit them with a second coat.

Winning!

The weather hasn't been conducive to painting the cabinets, but I've been out in the garage while my boys play outside after the oldest gets home from school.
We have three bikes between the two boys and I always feel like they're in the way.

View media item 88026
Ive looked around at several different DIY, self made designs and had ghosts of ideas on what to do. I haven't really gotten any specific design to gel in me head. While standing around thinking and looking at all the extra **** in my garage, like these plywood drawers I pulled out of the neighbors trash a few weeks ago, something hit.

View media item 88027
Pull some nasty staples and a couple of 3/4" plywood 45 degree scraps later

View media item 88029

Not bad for 100% scraps.
Could it be better? Absolutly.
But I found a use for that ******* drawer and solved my bike problem. Now just to get them to use it when they're done riding.

On the Nov. 14th my dad passed at the age of '82. My boys got to see him a few days beforehand which was good. His passing came as no surprise, and as much as it's never easy no matter how prepared you are, there's an odd relief that comes with it. He's together with mom again (who passed in July) and no longer suffering.

So now, we have to deal with the house and cleaning it out.

There's one bright spot to all this.

Now I *have* to bring my future project car, my FIL's 1936 Ford sedan, to my house because we don't have anywhere else to store it.

The car has been stashed at my parents house for the last four years, waiting.

Here's pics from our daylong ordeal on Black Friday.

They managed to stay out of trouble and keep themselves entertained most of the time.

1/2 cup, Bret, Dan and a Terrick.

Thanks guys I appreciate it.

Terrick, as for a time line, I've got a few other projects to wrap up before I can get into it. At that the point it's all about the money for parts. We all know how that goes.lol

Next, I dug out an old applebees style restaurant four top and base. It'd had been stashed in the garage for at least 15 years. It was pretty nasty. A little help from the youngest to clean it off and then a failed attempt with a 6" orbital which just didn't have enough balls followed by the belt sander. Finished the top off with some triple thick poly and sprayed the base with some black hammered finish paint. Four new adjustable feet for the floor. Hopefully this will find a place in the basement, if we ever get it finished out.

Awhile back, I'd found this piece but didn't know what it was for so I asked around here and Ford barn. Turns out I had the answer all along.

View media item 88212

Turns out I had a catalog that showed what it was, but I didn't really understand how it worked so I asked around again, without much success or response.

View media item 88231
But then about a week later, in another load I'd brought back from the parents, I found this booklet, which included this picture.

And lastly for today, I brought this chop block top restaraunt kitchen table back and I plan on refurbishing it for the basement like the earlier piece. This is the end view. It's at least 6 feet long and would make a great piece for a side table.

My question for you is: how do I best go about cleaning the metal shelf on the bottom? You can see where I took a grinder with a flap wheel to it and also a 90* die grinder with a scuff pad to it. Both seem pretty labor intensive PITA processes. Is there anything better/easier/faster? Orbital sander and some 60 grit?

If it were me, I would hit it first with a wire wheel on the 90° angle grinder to get the worst of the schmutz then hit it with a DA sander.

YMMV

Ok first off what a bunch of cool stuff you are bringing home. Good memories I hope. Second I still have my dubbing tape deck. It works perfect and I can't bring myself to get rid of it. Plus I still have brand new blank cassettes. I could probably sell them to a millennial for big bucks :D

On the table bottom I agree with Dan. Using an orbital sand with 60 grit wit take awhile. It almost looks like it has some kind of coating on it.

Well this *****. I thought I'd go out and start sanding on the top of the chop block table.

View media item 89225
Turns out there's something nasty on the majority of the surface.

View media item 89227
View media item 89226
I tried some denatured alcohol and a razor blade which peeled up a lot of it.

View media item 89228
But then it also made it more sludgy.
View media item 89229
I used my belt sander smudge stick and it took some off the belt but then I ground the whole razor blade down taking more off.

Gonna have to think on this one.
