Quick update, a couple a pics.

Glueing up the three pieces for the table top.

View media item 96271
Clamps clamps clamps and a few screws.

View media item 96272
Bought some red oak 3/4" x 1 3/4" dimensional for the face frame. Ripped it down to 1" and ripped a couple other pieces to make some edging for the top.

View media item 96274
How's this for "planning"? This is how things look when I get anything of length on the chop saw.

View media item 96273
Tried my first attempt at a locking rabbit joint for the drawers. I may have had to make a second set of fronts for the drawers, and misscut the dadoe for the drawer bottom on them but hey, not to shabby.

View media item 96276
Gonna have to wait to get the drawers assembled.

Quick aside from the table build, I drove over to Ft Wayne (3 hrs 1 way) to buy some car parts for the '36. We met in the parking lot of the early V8ford museum, did the deal and then went in and checked it out.

I *could* go crazy with pictures because I did go crazy with the camera, but I'll just give you a taste:

View media item 96403

And the highlight for me, a '36 sedan made of stainless, polished to a mirror shine.

Tons of history and displays. Also a 10,000 sq ft room with a collection of 18 different '36 fords, all restored immaculately. One of each style.

If you're into that kinda thing, or live close, you should check it out.

I saw a garage sale listed on FB market place with a piece I'd like to get for the project car ('36 Ford) It's one of those things that maybe I wouldn't actively persue on EBay, but if you were gonna give me one, I'd take it. It also led me to wonder if their might be more flat head parts in the sale that they didn't show. They were also mentioning tool boxes full of tools for 10$ each. It was only 20 minutes away so I drug the boys out of bed and headed down early. Wife, who makes literally all the money, let me have $40 in cash knowing I'd spend anything she gave and drag home who knows what... also might have something to do with the $400 I spent on the parts at the museum.. anyway.
$40 and some serious walking away from things my hoarder tendencies would have really liked, I got three pieces. Not many other proper era parts but tons of stuff that would have taken days to sort out.

I walked away with:
A tri-co vacuum operated fan for the Ford.
A nice little bench vice.
A bell labs ringer. (Turns out I need a second piece to actually get it to ring, but they can be found)

Not to shabby.

I ripped the stuff down to just over 3/4" and then I used the kreg jig to connect the horizontals to the verticals. (Rails to the stiles). Then I used the kreg jig and glue to connect the frame to the carcass. I normally start be fixing one corner and then pull the other corners to where they need to be and then work my may inward. The small stile between the drawers which is a scrap piece that's only half as thick at the frame IS nailed on with some glue just for appearance. I kinda half assed it after I realized I didn't cut the piece that I needed way after everything was put away days ago. You'd have to be way paying attention to pick it out though.

I obviously like using joinery for most stuff but there are places and applications where a kreg jig is just the right thing. Face frames are definitely one of those things for me.

I'm gonna do something that's pretty difficult to do.

I'm gonna make a "this post is useless with out pics" post that actually has pics!

It seems that 1. My ability to take pictures during a project is regressing horribly and 2. I underestimated the scope of this project and got into it so deep that I only managed 1 crappy process picture that is so bad it doesn't explain anything and 2 aftert pictures. SmH

Over a year ago, we bought a golf cart to use for tooling around the neighborhood and its been a PITA trying to fit two kids and two adults on one bench seat so yesterday I dropped $600+ on a rear seat and seat belts. I never thought I'd be the kind of guy to own a golf cart, but here I am, so I'm embracing it.

The project actually involved getting into the carts guts and changing get out two of the canopy supports, which I didn't expect. Everything else was pretty standard "bolt on" type stuff without having to get to crazy.

The project helped remind me that it's nice to have the right tools like a pneumatic rachet etc. available to make things go quicker when you want to do something. Over all, it took me about three hours, with a couple interruptions, to pull the old club holder and accessories off and install the new back seat, seat belts and safety bar. Also purchased, but not installed yet, is a battery charge meter. I figured I could handle all the mechanical stuff on one day and mess with electrical stuff another day.

[When we originally built the cabinets for the garage we designed the center cabinet to be focal point, both visually and functionally. We planed on hanging/storing/displaying the important stuff in a cabinet right over the middle of the bench. I designed a cabinet that both pulled out and also had a few layers to it. A sort of room with rooms thing.

There's actually another door in front of the one in the third picture that I've removed to start placing tools on

and so I ask you guys, what would you add/subtract/move around.
Theses are kind of "first order" woodworking things.

Edit:
Other choices include

Also, things that done make the "front page" go on the back of the first or to the "second page" etc. relegated further back and thus "second function things" (calipers in the pouch)

In my work the marking gauge and small square would definitely trump the compass and dividers for the front page. Looking forward to how it turns out.

I'm Putting the tool board on hold for bit while I handle a couple other things.

I have a friend who asked me to help repair a couple bikes/trikes for the children's program she works with at church. The other day she stopped by and dropped this off.

I absolutely love it and was intrigued to say the least.

The press fit bearing was no longer press fit.

Plan calls for a roll pin to hold the bearing in place

I'm not usually mindful of being precise but I had a vision of drilling a hole and the press pin being just smaller and therefore useless. So I broke out the calipers. Came in at .099.

Decided to go with the .095 bit.
Thanks again dad, for having and passing on good tools.

If you haven't noticed, I have a Sun motor tester problem. I'm always looking etc.
This had been on eBay starting bid of $50, and I knew my wife wouldn't go for that, so I just kept watching it. The seller eventually listed it for a buck, so I bid. No one else bid and I won! (you're all thinking "that should tell you something!!! Lol)

It was about two hours away, in my MIL's home town. Normally, driving two hours "for buck" wouldn't normally fly either. Well, it just so happens we were traveling out of state "right by" it so that worked out too! Definitely "a sign". Hahaha

Even though it's pretty crusty, it's strait and solid. I like the 6 volt / 12 volt service sticker. Haven't seen that one till now. The top and bars were off when I picked it up, which actually worked better for access to clean it.

Assembled. Doesn't really look much cleaner here, but it is. There was a lot of grease and grime in the bottom and just all over.

I cut the wires and pulled the modules out and then threw the frame and all the mouse death and piss into the dumpster. I lysol-ed the **** out of the backs and will part them out here soon. I'm seriously contemplating using one of the needles from one of these gauges to try to repair the one on the distributor tester. Theyre all pretty clean looking. Glass in tact etc.

Stole some time Thursday for some QST. Had three different projects in the mix, two of which I made some decent progress on.

The first was a new drill press table. The design is a mash of two different Woodsmith tables. Yet to be added/finished: aluminum t-track in the dadoes and a fence that slides along the t-track. Possibly a handle on the drawer and some sort of dust collection from beneath the table.

The second project was a second LEGO mini figure shadow box. It's currently getting spray painted white

QST value add. Things are going well if you have enough time to multitask some wings!

I think I'm going to save the sacrificial top from the old drill press table as a reminder of my dad. It's a work of art.

I remember seeing one of these maybe in the background of a car mag article or YouTube video and vaguely remember seeing one in person. Well I found it while futzing around trying to clean up the garage.

A couple of google clicks on the ole internet later... from a 1947 Mac Allied catalog.

Now to keep my eyes open to see if maybe I have the other two pieces. Not as important but would still be cool to find if they're stashed in all the stuff I inherited.

When I was grabbing stuff from dads garage, I grabbed this little wards master drawer set. It had a cool old school vibe to it and had some cool old fastener stuff in it.

And apparently some flathead carburetor jets!

A couple a weeks ago, I saw one listed on FB market place for $10. For whatever reason, I talked myself out of it.
But then, today, I see it's been reduced to $5!
You betcha.
It's a little rough in that the middle dividers are gone and there's some schmutz in the bottom drawer, but over all it's decent.

I feel you. I am in the same boat. although it has been nice doing a couple of projects in the house this year. (bathroom floor redo and insulate the attic)

Next on my agenda is to get out to the garage and purge/organize the leftovers...

I teach percussion once a week for a High school program and one of the directors, a long time friend, asked if I could make the program a “marching machine”. It’s a type of percussion instrument that simulates a “stereotypical” sound of soldiers marching. I was familiar with the instrument, but did a few YouTube searches just to be safe.

Being “me” I decided to step it up a notch and make the thing self contained for transportation as they’re generally a fairly awkward piece.
First I built a box and then cut the top and bottom off as lids.

View media item 100579
I decided to do different widths for each because the person using the thing could use the lids to actually play the thing. Two widths/depths = different pitches to choose from. I glued and pinned some thin pieces as each corner to help register the lids when it was packed up and also to raise the lid off the floor to provide more resonance when it was being played.

View media item 100580
Next I chopped up a couple of cull lumber 2x4s I bought at HD. I decided that I should rip them down to 1 1/2 x 1 1/2. These pieces are what simulate the feet.

View media item 100581
I drilled two holes at 90* to each other offset a half inch from each other so they didn’t intersect. These pieces then get suspended on a grid of string inside the box.

View media item 100582
Which looks like this when done.

View media item 100583
Then I secured the lids using latches and out a couple of handles on it for transport and to aid in playing it.

picture.php

They needed it for rehearsals so I didn’t have time to put a finish on it. I probably should have taken the time to put some clear poly on it.

Here’s a link to a vid to hear what it sounds like.

It was definitely nice to get out in the shop for a couple of days too.

Well, I’ve switched directions again. I spend time on GJ’s sibling site, The Ford Barn, where one of the members has recently started video documenting his work on a flathead engine. This has motivated me to get out in the garage and finally get to work on my own project and video it as well.

I’m still working on style, delivery, and content, so please be kind as I figure that stuff out.

Intro

Episode 1.

I know wrenching on flatheads isn’t everyone’s bag, but let me know what you guys think.
Please feel free to leave production feedback (content, editing, music choice, running commentary/no running commentary etc.) here or in the comments on YouTube.

Episode 2 is up.

As always, feedback is welcome and appreciated.
I tried a little more running commentary this time.

Thanks, T
