My Forever Garage/Workshop

When we sold the old homestead and moved, lost the barn/workshop I'd had for over 30 years. We moved to a smaller house more land and no workshop.
Which means I get to build my forever workshop! The old barn was 25'x33x8' a kit barn that the PO built for horses. I converted it a workshop, pored concrete and filled in the stalls.
The replacement will be metal 26'x34'. Roof will be a shed roof 1:12 pitch 12' high at the door end with a 10x10 door. My wife get her metal office to, 14'x28'x10'.
The buildings will be turnkey. I'll be doing the elect once the electrician installs the sub panel to the workshop.

Heres the preliminary layout for the shop. My old shop had a 8'x8' door offset to the west side. Always had to carefully squeeze our full size trucks through the door.
Won't know how to act with a 10'x10' door.

Just got word from the builder. Manufacturer won't deliver the building (from Texas) next week because of the 4th falling on Wednesday. So every thing is pushed back another week.
Which reminds me that I need to call the electrical contractor and get a bid for a service upgrade to 200A.

I lived in PHX for one year and heard everybody talking about the monsoon rains......I kept waiting for them and what they call monsoon is just a medium rain here in the midwest, I wasn't scared or impressed. Enjoy the monsoons.

One year of monsoon? Every year is different, some big, some small. Arizona weather is boring and no tornados! I'll take it.

Heres the current power: 100A service with overhead lines to the house. The power company said to increase to 200A service they would have to put in another pole between the pole barn and transformer. They pay for the new transformer, we pay for the new pole and the existing pole next to the barn they replace on their dime.
The power to the well pump is direct burial, (240V 30A) to code, don't know. The power to the barn, direct burial probably not to code.
I will put all of the power from our pole underground and in conduit.
Currently there is no main breaker(s) for the house at the sub-panel, nothing at the pump house or at the swamp cooler.
I did upgrade the service to my previous workshop with the help of a knowledgeable helper, other than that I'm on a steep learning curve.

The project has been delayed until the clean up crew has arrived
Had a strong monsoon storm come through along with a microburst.
The port-a-potty was secured with 18" spikes.

We have buildings! Waiting on the county to approve the buildings, then permits for the electrical improvements. In the mean time I'm looking into protecting the concrete floor from automative oil spills, leaning towards a penetrating sealer.

Getting ready for elect.
Decided to use 3/4 OSB T&G to support the 5/8 firewall. This gives me the option of hanging heavy stuff on the wall. This the the Welding area. The wire sticking out is the earth ground for the elect panel.

Finely have the upgraded power. No more overhead wires, all underground.
All this and only cut (and repaired) the water line 3 times. Next will be lights for the shop and office.

Thanks 1/2 Cup. It's been over a year that I've been with out a shop, not much light in the shop right now but do have a 240v 50A outlet for my welder, YEA.. and one duplex 120v 20A. I feel much better. So many projects have/still on hold, not for much longer.

I like how much detail you put into your interior layout. What drawing program did you use. My interior plans are all 2D and 3D sketches for now.

Decided to continue the wall paneling/drywall for half of the shop. This will make cleanup around the work benches, mill and lathe easier.

Panel all the things!!

I've found that FRP panels behind the mill and lathe help a lot with grime and chips. Unpainted drywall will absorb cutting oils from chips, but FRP won't. Fairly cheap stuff too.

FRP, yeah. I bought one sheet for behind my lathe from Lowes, and will get another for behind my mill. Nice slick stuff.

Shops getting used even though it's not done. Searching for the elusive fuel air leak need to run the engine inside. Exhaust goes outside. Gaffer tape keeps vent from sliding off.
4"x8' aluminum semi-rigid dryer vent from Ace hardware.

Finished up the lighting for the shop. 24 fixtures, each with 2 2000 lumen 4100K, T8 LED tubes. Thats just over 100 lumens per sq ft. Other than the 4 fixtures located over the sectional door and the 2 just in from the walk in door there at 8' from the floor.
Decided to panel the whole shop, thats next. Then run conduit for the outlets on the west side and run conduit for the air compressor
