The maintenance supervisor is rolling a two wheel dolly past my desk with a Control cabinet for custom machinery on it. Stainless Steel with a polycarbonate window in it. Brand new. Still in the box new. Asks me if I would have any use for it since he was on the way to the dumpster with it.

Their loss is my gain. It's been sitting in the garage for a couple of months now and I haven't figured out what to use it for. There are no shelves inside for easy use to store smaller items, although that's easy enough to make. There are no knobs to the latches either, but I can fab those up too.

I thought about lining it with something soft and keep my helmets in, but it would only hold 2 of them.

Anyone here do something trick with a similar cabinet? Ideas with pics would be great.

Here's a website that sells them for $1800. Not worth anything close to that to me.

How about making some shelves and using it as a display case for garage related memorabliia or whatever you are into. For example I've got a small display of Indian motorcycle things like wrenches, tank badges, models etc. In a display.

either make a display cabinet, or put shelves in it and use it for storing your precision instruments. try and sell or trade it for something you want. I would put shelves and display my toys in it and old antique tools.

Spray paint 'in case of emergency only' over the plexi, put in a pistol grip shot gun, ammo, and a bottle of bourbon. Hang on the wall.

An electrical cabinet for a rotary phase converter. I have a stainless electrical box I picked from the scrap bin similar in size but no clear front. It is sitting on a shelf in the shed waiting for the day I get all the widgets together to make the RPC. Then I will take over the WORLD! (The useless 3 phase equipment on CL world)

If you do go display cabinet. Some stainless sheet metal broke into angle riveted to the sides (rivet heads on the outside of the cabinet) and plexiglass cut into shelves would look nice. I have a different stainless case waiting for me to do just that on another shelf.....

Now I am sad. Too many projects waiting for me.

If that is the correct price I would sell it at a discount to the first offer. That is some
serious coin for something else.

Another vote for selling it here. You could get enough out of that cabinet to buy yourself a real nice box/cabinet of your chosing:D

I would feel guilty selling that considering where you got it from. Would also be concerned about possible negative impacts to my employment for selling something I got from the dumpster at work. Of course, I am excessively paranoid.

Sheer brilliance right here.

Thanks for the ideas guys. This is where I am going with it right now. I pointed out on Monday of this week to the person who gave it to me what it's worth and would you like it back? He said no, that he was instructed to dispose of it and that's what he did. Told me to sell it if I wanted. :rocker:

I do know what ya mean Bad Idea. I have been with this company for 25 years and they treat me really well. I do feel a little guilty, but I'm sure that will go away if I get cash for the cabinet.

If it doesn't sell I will probably go the display box route. That will give me an excuse to buy something cool to display.

And then they sold me this today for $300. I love my job. ;)
The cart it sits on was one of the first jobs I did when I started working there.

Damn straight, I'd have that thing listed on Ebay. If you sell it for a ton of cash, maybe throw a pizza party for the guys at work. I guess that would depend on how many guys work at your shop.

Definitely a display case, some LED lighting, some nice glass shelves.

Sweet score.

Both of these are good ideas. You don't have anything into it, so why not use it. Mount it sideways so the door hinge is on top
