Wow, what a transformation! Amazing work!
Awesome workshop and daill driver garage. Looks like a party is in order, you have enough driveway space for a rather large one.

How do you like the tankless water heater, does it take long for the water to heat up?

The party was this past Saturday although I don't remember all of it.:pimpflash

The tankless heater works great. I don't think it takes more then 20-30 seconds longer to heat up than the old unit did. I blame most of that on the fact that I had to route the HW line back to where the old water heater was in order to tie-in to the rest of the house. That adds a good 30'.

The black cabinets and stainless workbenches are actually a kitchen line from IKEA. The wood storage racks also came from IKEA.

How are the stainless benches to work on? Can they hold some weight and take some beating on? I have an IKEA a few hours away and your setup looks great! Its got me thinking!

I ended up mounting my vise on another small table I have. I don't think it owuld have done well on the IKEA bench. They look cool and offer lots of space for assembly and whatnot, but I wouldn't trust them to any really heavy objects (such as a vise).

My initial attempt at a secondary workbench was dismal at best. I used an old office table to support my drill press, vise, and miter saw.

It was wobbly and ugly. My wife got me a workbench kit for Christmas. (http://www.2x4basics.com) It came with the legs, hardware, and instructions to build a workbecnh out of 2x4's. I decided on a 7'x3' bench and went out and spent $100 on the wood (the most expensive part was the 3/4" Maple 4'x8' sheet (cut down to 7'x3') I used for the top).

It took me a couple of hours to put together. For not being much of a carpenter, I did a damn good job (90% kit, 10% me :p ).

Now I have a much sturdier workbench plus a lot more room to work. The shelves make for nice storage, although they are bit limited on height.

Well, too late for my .02, but I think I would have added a window above the add on garage door. Sort of a large blank space up there. I guess you could add a basketball goal. It all looks nice though.

Update:

This past weekend I finally finished my air distribution system. My compressor has been up and running for a while, along with a nearby hose reel (50') for air tools and filling tires. But I wanted a blowdown station at each workbench.

I really didn't want to go to any great expense (plus I can't braze very well), so I decided to run PE poly tube. It is 1/2" tube with a 3/8" inner, so it's very thick. It's rated for 250psi and we use it at work to connect air and N2 drops to equipment.

In order to route it cleanly, I ran it inside 3/4" conduit. This made for nice 90's, simple clamping to the wall/ceiling, and added protection in case the poly let loose.

Each blowdown station has a gauge, valve, and QD. Right now they're both setup for blow guns, but I could run anything off of them since they're fed from a 1/2" source.

I know it's not the most sophisticated system, but it works and it was cheap. Total cost = $20 filter + $50 conduit + absconded parts from work = $70. The regulator came with the compressor which I had bought previously for $300 used and I already had the hose reel.

Interesting use of the tubing, I wonder how it will hold up for that kind of shop use...I assume pretty well, just be careful not to cut it; at that height though, its out of the way, cool.

Has anyone used the garagepak systems?

I've looked into the 3 bay kit and just getting a bunch of extra straight tubing/bends to go to remote parts of the garage and shop.

Its a bit pricey, but is very durable, and modular.

Garage looks great!

I am not sure if I missed it, but, how big is the garage? Specifically, the area that the lift resides in. Just wondering how wide of an area I should allow for a lift when I build. Thanks, Chad.

The original garage space was ~400 sqft.
The combined space is now ~1100 sqft.
The bay where the lift resides is ~33ft x 15ft (outside dimensions).

Is your wife a member of the closet journal.:lol_hitti :lol_hitti :lol_hitti

What does she put in there that's the biggest dam closet I have seen in my life.:headscrat

The sad part is that the old closet was full before she moved in a couple of years ago and my clothes take up 1/2 of the new closet. :( Plus, I have more shoes than she does.

Holy Closet Space!!
300 sq.ft. or what?

I'd use it as a hidden "serenity now" room. Mini fridge, tv, internet, etc...

:Homer:
..."institution later"

Great job Bro! Sounds like ya got a pretty cool wife too.

Good, at least you are getting some use out of the closet as well. Those plans really help to realize just how big that garage is now, wow!

Come on out with it, don't hold out on us.

Mr. kidatari has my old workbench which I tore out just before the remodel started. It's 14 feet long, made out of unistrut, with 1/4" steel tops. :D
