My Garage finishing project

So, I got the itch to finish my garage this spring. It was initially half drywalled (taped but unfinished) from the original owner (house was built in 1993). I added insulation to the remaining bare walls and covered with drywall. I also added 2 8' florescent lights to replace 2 light bulbs. I since built a 12x16 shed that most of the tools and lawn/garden stuff is stored in.

My plan is to finish the drywall. Prime and paint semi-high gloss white with a gray lower paint scheme.

I'm not tackling the floor at this time. I patched it last season in some spots, it's really bad.

Here are some pictures so far:

Some old pictures that I found:

2 years ago I put up the drywall and insulation on the remaining walls. I don't have any pictures of that. However, you get the idea =).

Here are a few of 1st coat of mud to the walls:

Note that I had to remove the existing tape and mud that was on the walls. It was very brittle from the previous owner (really the builder) never priming and finishing the job. It would just flake off and it was easier to tape with it off. I also had to add more screws to the ceiling as the very few nails that were holding it were pulling out. They really cheeped out on building the garage.:(

I started the project with some little items that were in my garage still in the middle of the garage. That lasted 2 days and I had to get everything out. I can work around the tool chest, bike, washer, and tile (which is for the for the next project in the kitchen).

Well that's where I am so far. I need to still tape the ceiling and finish everything with a few coats. I only get a few hours a day to work on the task so until the next update....

Primed and painted the ceiling and walls. I'll work on the stripe tomorrow! I love how it is looking!

Stairs that I'm playing with, stained them (might paint them) but I'll decide after everything else is done:

Priming and white paint:

Taping, 360 degree laser level is amazing!:

Bottom color on:

Painting is done! Other then a issue with some older blue painters tape pulling up the paint underneath (newer "delicate" painters tape was perfect), everything went smoothly.

I added a retractable extension cord in the middle of the garage:

Here's the painted stripe (Behr exterior paint was very good):

Now I need to put up shelving and trim.

Looks good, how high up does the gray go and how big is the stripe? I am trying to get ideas on how to paint my garage and I really like the looks of yours!! I think this color scheme would look great with my racedeck since I have black/alloy and blue. Let me know!!

I really like the color combo, I can get you the Behr color codes if you want.

The position of the stripe was trial and error. I used the 360 laser level to determine where to put it. I didn't want to intersect any outlets or switches. I'll have to measure the height of the gray but the blue stripe is 4.5" wide.

Yes, please get me the Behr paint codes or colors!! Didn't even notice it was blue, thought it was black, but I am thinking I really like that dark blue!! Also measure the gray as well!!

Thanks,
Brian

I just did the same project in my garage with drywall that had been up since '91. Did you have a problem with the dirt/grime in the old drywall bleeding through? I eventually had to go with Kilz oil-based primer and even that didn't cover it in 1 coat.

Yes, there were a few stains (from water or something else) that the primer did not cover. However, for me they were all on the lower part of the wall. The gray covered it w/o any issues. I was really surprised by how well the Behr exterior paint covered. I only needed 1 coat of the 2 darker colors....

"Garage Finishing" --- "Finishing Garage"

Isn't that a contradiction in terms?? Garages are NEVER "finished."

The stripe is 3' 3.5" from the garage floor (along the back wall). The floor slopes slightly from there.

Pain was in the Behr exterior collection brochure from home depot: Gray is "Iron Wood ECC-33-1" and blue is "Dark Sea ECC-33-3".

I'm going to try and get some shelving up tomorrow and also the floor trim. The trim is so damn expensive at HD/Lowes (~$1.10ish /lft)!

Put up trim, frost sprayed the door window, bought a few 5-tier shelves and hung some signs/posters!

I still have to find a good workbench, but I'm really pleased with everything and all the help from the forums here!

Re: Dog

Does the dog know the proverb, too? The little boy did not like the look of the barking dog. "It's all right," said a gentleman, "don't be afraid. Don't you know the proverb: Barking dogs don't bite?" "Ah, yes," answered the little boy. "I know the proverb, but does the dog know the proverb, too?"Almost any situation--good or bad --is affected by the attitude we bring to.
