Great read, made for a nice break from inspecting these turbine blades on this long weekend.

That can be tedious...

It's great to see you posting regularly again and, as usual, interesting to see what you are up to.

Thanks Kev!

You are one hell of a capable guy! I hope you keep sharing your doings and never get married/kids etc. :)

Sometimes I feel that way and other times I feel like I'm not making any progress. Regardless, we'recommend forging ahead!

There definitely aren't any children in my future.

Quick little update. Kooky's new paint booth got paint arrestors yesterday.

We also finished up Kooky's 7th axis end effector and I got around to programming it last night. Who says the only thing Arduino can do is blink LED's? :)

Epic. No other words suffice.

Are you just controlling the 7th axis with the Arduino...or???

We used an Arduino Nano to interface a 7th axis to the Kuka controller, yes. The Arduino acts as a slave and sensor pass through for the Kuka.

How do you "CAM" the painting motion? You said you watch it to program it. Is it a native language from the robot manufacturer.

Fascinating stuff here.

Hi Aggie,

There are several ways to program a robot. The simplest method is from the teach pendant. Most moves can be accomplished from the pendant, but it'seems slow and tedious work. The language is native to Kuka.

The faster method is to use an offline simulation software. This allows more flexibility, but you need to import CAD models of your machine, end effector, base and part to properly simulate and program movements.

We use both methods, but for our painting moves, a series of relative movements taught from the pendant is all it takes. Balancing paint viscosity, fluid needle drawback and robot translation speed produces the proper wet film thickness on the part.

Perhaps I missed it but what product are you making? At this clip you'll be doing applications for Kuka.:)

We are ramping up to produce fabricated outdoor products for mass market.

We just became a distributor of RoboDK and Kuka will be coming to visit the shop next month. We'll have some exciting new updates soon! :)

Hey John,

Are you still around bud? Would love to see how the shop has changed over the last few years and where you are at with the robotics and machine rebuilds. Just picked up a V-36 and was able to dredge up your thread I saved years ago knowing I would one day own one

Last time I talked with him was a couple years ago, he had come back from working out of the country, things were well, but I lost track of him. :(

Yea, I haven't seen him log in here since last year, but I was hoping he had either started a new website or was posting somewhere else. John's restorations are always a joy to follow.
