My Garage Renovation

Hello All,
I thought I would finally start a build thread here. I have been lurking for some time. Anyway i have been in this house for nearly 5 years and think I caught up on enought Honey do's to get this going.
I don't have any current pics but promise I will get them soon. Right now I don't have any lights out there and can't really take pictures in the dark - will have to wait untill the weekend. Won't get lights back in there untill the walls and ceiling are painted.
Here are some before Picures taken a while ago. Plus I have some models of the layout I did reciently to see how many lights I can get on the ceiling. They are the long black boxes you see there. Also you can see the hole for the attic ladder I just put in and my air compressor outline.

Guys,
Here is what I have done since these picures. I put base board heating in to actually heat the garage (I'm in NY so winters can get cold and working like that is out of the question). I put two rows of 8ft baseboard along the wall near the house. One right over the other.
I put a new door from the house to the garage, otherwise I would have to go out the back door and around the hose to actually get out there. I replaced that window along the far wall, put in an attic ladder and totally re sheetrocked the celing.
I have two coats of mud on all the walls and celing now and just have to do some final sanding. I think two coats should be enough. The walls were already mudded up a LONG time ago, I had to re tape all the seams and decided to just leave the existing sheetrock and paint it. Hope I made the right decision. It's pretty questionable in some areas.
I was going to take out the back door for more wall space, but I still use it a ton to my surprise. So I Think I might just leave it. That's where it stands right now. If you guys are interested I'll post more as I go along. I promise new pics this weekend too when its light out LOL.

Oh, I also went to Home Depot today and picked up 5 Eight footer Florecent lights. The 4 circles you see in the model will be recessed lighting since that's where the Garage door opens to.

Hey all,
Well I got home early enough today to get some pics while it's still light out! Here you can see the new door I put in that goes into the house (note the baseboard that runs under it). Also the new window I put in in the Left hand side.
Oh, I also ran a new elecrical panel you can see along the back wall. I have 50 service running to it from the main panel and ran all new electric in the garage. The A/C is wired directly to the main panel seperatly. Everything else goes to the sub panel.
I got all the spackel cut down tonight. I have to hang the lights while the studs are still marked (before I paint) then take them down. Hopefully will paint this weekend.

Good to see you are making progress. I barely got my wall up to divide the work area from the "den" and parking and we started on a redo/repaint of a car. Don't let other stuff impede your progress if at all possible.

It's and R/C airplane - although you can put small children and animals in it if you like

Kind of off topic, but I'll elaborate a little for those interested. It's 40% scale Extra 330L. Wing span is 3.1 meters and it's powered by a 150cc Boxer twin two cycle. It's got enough power to hover pointing straight up and accelerate straight up like a rocket off a launch pad.

When I get further along with the garage, I'll post some pics of it as well - Right now I promised I would not fool with it untill I get a good deal of work done. I don't need any more distractions. Plus when the spring hits for good I'll never get the garage done, so I'm running out of time LOL.

Okay,
I promised I wouldn't do it, but I put a third coat of mud on the walls. They are really not that perfect so I know I am wasting my time, but I can't paint untill the weekend anyway. I'll finish cuting them down tonight and hang all the lights to clear the way for priming and painting this weekend.

I want to hang the lights because once it's painted I'll loose all the stud locations. I'll take the back down to paint and won't wire them yet.

I bought a gallon of gloss Exterior enamel for the walls. I don't know if its a mistake or not. I know the walls are not that perfect and I hope the gloss won't show off all the imperfections. I couldn't find a Semi-gloss interior / exterior enamel, and I know the flat I have won't hold up. I went to Aboffs at lunchtime and they didn't really help that much. I'll just put it up, if I don't like it I'll just have to prime and repaint it.

Okay - but I'll put that in another thread when I get a chance, kind of off topic here. Breifly, it's a factory RED '71 convertible (Non-XR7). 351 Clevland 4V closed chamber heads, 4 spd top loader, detroit locker.

On to the Garage,
I got the 3rd coat of mud cut back down and installed all the lights. I hope I didn't over do it - man there's allot of fixtures up there LOL. I got 5 8' fixtures, 3 4' fixtures and 4 high hats over the garage door. I guess I can always turn a few off, but I think I'm over compensating from working in the dark too long LOL. I marked the holes and took them all back down so I can paint. I also bought another gallon of paint. I didn't like the gloss enamel I bought, too shiny and shows to many imperfections in the wall (I painted a small section). I'm on to painting tomorrow, so more pics and updates to follow.

Painting Today - Before / after Pics

Hello All,
Got to it this weekend. Got some painting done. It took me 2 days to prime and apply two coats of Ceiling and wall paint. It took me forever to cut the room in. I don't know why I'm so slow, but at least it's done.

Next up is to put the lighting in and then it's on to the floor.....

Well, I got two lights up last night. 10 more to go LOL!

It looks like I'm going to use an epoxy fooring system and should hopefully start the project this weekend. I'm going to use a clear primer, clear base and color flakes for the color and clear urethane top coat. This weekend I'll start by trying to mechanically prepare the surface. I have to knock down some high spots and smooth it out a bit.

Got up 4 more lights last night, 5 more to go!! LOL. I am wiring as I go and running the wires under the floor in the attic, I guess that is taking me longer then I thought - especially since I have move around all the Cr@p in the attic!!

Well you were right. I went to pick up 10 T-12 110Watt HO bulbs and when I told the guy what they were for they all laughed at me and told me I was nuts, no one does that. I just nodded my head. I was really starting to second guess myself because those 5 eight footers looked intimidating up there. Plus I am using X-10 switching and was worred about the relay handing all of those fixtures.
Not to worry though - all is perfect. It's for sure a ton of light but man it will be nice to work in! Note that for the 4 footers I bought the wrong size bulbs so I had to fish some out of the trash pile - you can see on fixture is not lighting. Those are the old fixtures that were in there - I was working like that!!!

I'm putting up a 10x10 shed (Pics Forthcoming) in back of the garage for my Sand blast cabinet, tire changer, press and parts washer. Oh, and of course some lawn equipment. key to getting alot in is to kick everyone else out LOL.
I think the shed was a steal, 240 for steel shed from Sears. Heck, if it only lasts 5 years it will be worth it.

Good plan, I'm also planning a garden shed, mine will only be 3'x8' though (no more room on my land). I think that's a key also, too many garages are full of lawn stuff and get cluttered fast.

Naturally I'll keep following this thread.
