Enjoyed seeing you get stuff for free to repurpose it. Please keep posting. You never know when a deal will show up.

Keep care of your Dads tools. He would be proud you are using them.
That was one of my dads last reminders there were a lot of tools downstairs to use and take care of.

Re: My garage, repurposed!

Thanks everyone for the great feedback and comments.

I scored some more free stuff this weekend. My wife went shopping with her girlfriends and sister so my two girls, Grandma(my Mom), and I went out and about. We went and picked up some free items off CL just on a whim. We also hit some garage sales. I found a bucket of tools with a bucket boss canvas bag in it full of tools. The guy held firm at 20 so I took it. It has a ton of misc stuff. 8-10 Blackhawk wrenches, vise grips, a couple pliers and a bunch of other stuff. I haven't even seen what's buried in the bottom yet. Gonna dump it out and get an inventory tomorrow. We also found my 4 year old daughter a razor scooter, and my wife some nice shadow boxes so it was a good day collecting!

Here are the things I got free on Craigslist. Ones a homemade tool cart. Looks like it was made out of sheet metal or ducting type material. All riveted together. I thought it was pretty cool. With a new coat of paint and a top I have that I plan to put on it I think I'll mount my dad's bench grinder to it. And maybe come up with some drawers for it. It's got good heavy duty caster's.

Also got two more two drawer file cabinets from the same guy.
vupasyvu.jpg

He also had these hardware storage bins that rotate.
adane5yb.jpg

He also gave me a five drawer high lateral file cabinet that has the type of drawer fronts that lift up and slide in and then the shelve/drawers pull out. I have to get a pic of that tomorrow. Only issue with it was all the drawer fronts were missing. I took it anyways for free. Going to paint it black like my other five drawer and it works great to hold milk crates.

Got a bunch of stuff moved around this weekend also so I could store my utility trailer in the garage. I have nowhere to store it in our yard unless I make a couple fence panels into a gate to sneak it in the backyard. Which I may do even though we're just renting the house. For now it gets it out of the neighborhoods rv storage lot where it was $40 a month to store it. I'll get some pics of it up as well this week.

I got 4 these plastic organizers from work out of a lease van we returned so I grabbed these out of the drawers in the back. Trimmed them up to fit into my drawers.
3ehy6uha.jpg

I got these red metal file trays in the big load of cabinets i got a couple weeks ago off Craigslist. I'm thinking I'll grab some angle chanel and build them up to match the height of my top box they're sitting next to. That'll give them a bit more space in between each tray. They're actually nice trays for an office!

Looking good! I picked up a bunch of metal office cupboards this past weekend for my garage too. Will have to take some pictures and put them up in my thread.

Re: My garage, repurposed!

Here are some picks of the bucket and bucket boss with its contents that I got at the garage sale last weekend for $20. In my opinion ot was well worth 20. Almost a full set of Blackhawk wrenches. A pop rivet gun and some rivets and a bunch of other goodies.

Got some work done today. Cleaned out a few drawers and organized. I ended up using some extra kobalt socket rails I had for wrench and pliers storage.

Also got shelves painted black for the wall cabinet. I got the red plastic bins from work to go along with the red black theme. Going to paint the doors tomorrow.

Re: My garage, repurposed!

I wanted to share some pics of the trailer I rebuilt a few years ago. I got it for $60. It had 31x10.5 truck tires on it that rubbed in the wheel wells. I got new rims and tires at a used tire place for $75. I had to take it through State patrol and get it inspected and licensed which ran around $200. Then with new wood, paint and light kit I was into it close to $700.

The deck was rotten and the sides were made out of siding. It looked like the trailer used to be a landscaping trailer. It originally had expanded metal sides and a tailgate ramp. At some point someone cut the expanded metal sides and tailgate off. They did a terrible job and left a couple inches of expanded metal along the bottom rails. When I took the rotten decking off it exposed all that so I completely stripped it. I spent hours grinding all the expanded metal off and getting the trailer down to bare frame.

I ground tons of **** off, sanded, repainted, added the Harbor freight LED light kit and redid the deck and sides with pressure treated lumber. I used ALL stainless hardware. The decking and sides are all bolted together. In this pic i had flipped the axle but it is now flipped back and normal. This summer i want to touch up all the paint and clear stain all the wood.

This trailer has gotten so much use. Family and friends have borrowed it. It's moved us to Arizona and back to WA. It's hauled bark, gravel, furniture, and many Craigslist scores! I couldn't be more satisfied with the original $60! I have since built a matching tailgate as well.

Got some work done this morning. Painted some pegboard and the frames of the doors for the wall cabinet. I removed the "retro" glass inserts, painted the hinges silver and the frames red. Plan is to replace the glass inserts with blackboard material.

Great job on that trailer. I'm doing something similar myself just not quite as big. but will be useful none the less. Glad to see your progress.

Great update, quick question did you use a spray gun for the doors or just a rattle can?

OUTSTANDING.....and you ****! We have a lot in common, I only wish I had a job that provided so many deals. Those cabinets and trailer came out ****. And +1 on keepin yer mitts off of Dads toolbox, I know it's tempting, but leave it alone, you'll be glad later. I did 1 out of 4 toolboxes/chest's that were my dads (WWII Engineer), a Gerstner, and even though it turned out great, it just didn't feel like his anymore. Keep up the good work.

Thanks! Feel free to post a pic of your progress!

Just a rattle can. I actually have an HVLP gun that I've never used. It came in an air tool kit with my kobalt compressor. Someday I'll try it out but I've never used one before.

Anyone feel free to give some advice on how to use it, I'll have to watch some YouTube how to videos! What type of paint do you use? Does it make more overspray?

Re: My garage, repurposed!

Here's some more updates from what I got done yesterday. Painted pegboard in place next to upper box and under black shelf.
ysasa4u5.jpg

a7u4aseh.jpg

I also got out the heat gun and removed the stickers from the top box lid that I put on there 10 years ago. Tastes have changed! [emoji6]
ydajurum.jpg

I didn't go with blackboard material for the doors as it was too expensive. Would've been $30 to get 5 9 x 30 pieces for inside the frames. Went with cheaper press board like material and painted black. Took two coats. I painted all the hinges silver and got matching knobs for each door. Not hung yet but here's an idea.
y7egabap.jpg

Also transformed my 4 year old daughters bed from toddler day bed to full size. It is a 4 in 1 very nice cherry bed. Her Grandfather bought one for her and one for her little sister when they were each born. Went from crib to toddler to daybed to full size with the purchase of rail kits. We bought the kits when we got the beds. I must say, very solid construction to full size. Heavy duty hardware. We wanted to do mattress with no box spring and the bed came with only 4 cross slats so I cut two sheets of 1/2 plywood to fit in place to be a platform.

That sir, is priceless.

Thanks! They had one awesome day today! A local furniture warehouse puts on a huge Easter event, Easter Bunny pics, Easter egg hunt, and a petting zoo. We spent 2-3 hours there. Then an 8 year old relatives birthday party for 2 hours at a Bouncy House. They are sleeping soundly, and I'm headed that way!:Sleep::Sleep:

Just got all the doors hung and knobs installed. Pretty happy with the outcome. Cleaned the area up for a pic! Now I can fill that cabinet... and get some other things rearranged and organized.

Wow, coming together nice. I believe I read in earlier post that your renting that place? If that's true I wanted to give some tips. Please take no offense to this. Well if you havnt heard this before casters casters casters. One it makes it easier to move things and if you move it makes that whole process easier. Second I would hanging things like cabinets and such with french cleats. Third when building your projects look into certain lengths and heights so then can be move or broken down and moved as needed and give a uniform look . I can say my garage has be through MANY changes. I maybe changed it few times a year for the past 8 plus years with at least one major remodel per year. The ideas I just mention will make it easier to move and reconfigure the garage as needed. One thing I do is I choose to keep my tool boxes on the casters while other people put them in a frame. I say to each their own but I say what if I need to move it. My HF 44 weighs think 300 350 empty then add tools? Its just some helpful ideas to think about to maybe avoid the pitfalls in the future that Ive had and maybe some others on the GJ.

Hi Gerard,

No offense taken at all! I've thought about all that though and while I agree with you on caster's, I liked the look of my box in the frame next to the other cabinets better. It is not attached to the frame, just sitting on there in place with some 1 x 4' keeping it from sliding front to back. So I figure when I move I'll just lift it off and set it on a moving Dolley. The whole bench area isn't attached to the wall and the top comes off relatively easy. The wall cabinet is mounted with screws but the french cleats is a good idea. I just learned about those reading another members thread. Everything else is easily broken down and move able. We've moved 3 times in the last two years so I told my wife no more moving until we buy! Ive moved all my tools too many times already. 2012 we moved to Arizona and i actually sold a lot of stuff for that which now i am regrettimg! I'm set to stay here for at least a couple years until my wife finishes her Masters and we can afford the house we really want.

Thanks for the advice. That new Craftsman box you got for $8 was unbelievable!

Re: My garage, repurposed!

Wow, it's been a busy week! So glad it's Friday! Here's some pics of my weeks scores!

Now, it's becoming kind of a hobby and challenge to me to find free stuff throughout the week on CL and either re use it or fix it and try and sell it to fund my own garage needs! I am doing this all while I'm already out and about, spending no extra time out of my way to get anything. I pick stuff up on my way home or between jobs on a break or lunch during my work day.

This happened to be free across the street from where I was working Thursday. Just pulled up the free section on a break and saw it. Thought it was pretty cool. Needs to be sharpened but still cut grass when I got home!

magyhugu.jpg

I got all of this plywood, a large piece of maple hardwood for a benchtop, 6 pieces of 1/4" thick pegboard, a bunch of other misc wood and 50' of 18" deep wire shelving with mounting hardware on Monday for free on my way home from work.

y8eve9ep.jpg

Got this free composite propane tank yesterday but now after doing research and a post here asking for opinions will probably use up the propane and get rid of it. Bad reviews and most places won't fill them anymore.

yty6a7u7.jpg

Picked these up today on my way south from working north of Seattle. The one on the left fired up right away. The one on the right seems seized up and older. The guy said he had it for parts. The good running one just needs a new chain and seems pretty new. Both free in the cases.

a4esybam.jpg

y7aqy6uq.jpg

uhyte3ys.jpg

After I got home I refreshed the free section and found this for free 5 miles away from my house and still available so my wife, girls and I went and picked it up. My 4 year old daughter was so excited. I showed her a pic and told her someone was giving it away and we could clean it up for her. We were just talking about getting her a bigger bike and this works perfectly. I got it home and had her help me in the garage to air up the tires, lube the chain and adjust the brakes. She could hardly wait. We rode for 2 hours after that which made it all worth it!

ze2unuqu.jpg

My wife says I have a problem and am addicted to Craigslist yet she always loves the stuff I get or repurpose. Lol. She loves repurposing stuff as well. Since we just converted our daughters crib to a full bed we have her crib mattress leftover and she has an idea off pinterest to repurpose pallets painted with a crib mattress as the cushion for outdoor furniture. We'll see if we get around to that!

I just can't help getting these freebies. If I don't someone else will!

I also as you may have seen in the Lowes clearance thread picked up 4 of the Kobalt mobile tool carts on clearance for 30 a piece. I just couldn't pass them up for that price. I already had one but will figure out something for 4 more! I was thinking about painting and modding one up. Maybe selling a couple or just keeping all four for future use. If I sold a couple I could probably make my money back on them.

a4e5urus.jpg

Hope you enjoy seeing my scores. Going to get some work done this weekend in the garage as well!

Re: My garage, repurposed!

So, I scored this sweet table/desk for free Sunday off CL. Drove 40 min to pick it up. It's about 4 ft wide 30 in deep. I saw it and instantly thought I would take the adjustable feet off and put caster's on and have a nice Rollaround work table. I picked it up and was pleasantly surprised at how sturdy it was, not to mention a very heavy base.

3 hours or so go by and the girl giving it away texted me and says she found out it may be a Herman Miller antique desk and may be worth $500. She cautioned me not to use it in the garage as a shop table and to do my homework because it my be highly sought after. I replied thanks, I'll look into it! Sure enough it has a Herman Miller sticker on the under side...

They're on ebay and various Internet sites for 599 and different prices. I have no idea why. It's just a basic table but hey, now I am questioning using it in the garage or selling it!

Another half hour went by and she texted me again saying if I didn't want it she would gladly come get it and take it back! Haha. Yeah right. Not after you just told me it's worth 500!

Sell for sure! $500 can fetch a lot of tools and materials, and there are plenty of other options for solid tables out there. Looking forward to seeing what else you come up with!

You are right. I will sell!

I scored big today! On my way home I picked up this cargo unit that goes in a van or truck bed for free off CL. I could use it as a storage unit by adding some strips across the front and use it to store spray paint or something. Then use the slots for various things. But I think I'll sell it to fund other stuff. The pics are standing on end but it sits on the side with the slots so the dividers you see would be facing up as bins for misc things. A pretty sweet unit. People just give this stuff away! I don't understand why they don't sell!

Also, I got two free pickups lined up tomorrow for some lateral black file cabinets and one 4 drawer vertical that is grey and looks industrial. In excellent condition with functioning locks and keys. Going to replace sine if the ones I have with the laterals. I will post pics when I get them.

Haha thanks for that!

But wait til you see this! I just locked down these 5 yes count it 5! METAL wall cabinets and 1 fire proof drawer base for pick up Sunday! The guy is removing them this week from his shop and I can pick them up free! I even offered to come help him take them down. I mean, I'm rearranging my whole garage to do this stuff! I took down a 5 shelf unit to put up more cabinets and be able to hide stuff away! Simply amazing and feeling blessed that it's all been for FREE! These wall cabinets are in perfect shape he said and worth hundreds to me!

Wow, you lucky SOB. YOU REALLY ****. LOL, first total rearrangement of the garage counted. Your starting off better than I did. It took years to find my stuff since where I live you don't come by this stuff that often when ppl get rid of it. Usually in Florida people get rid of everything before they move down here so the deals are few and far between like your getting.

Your really into getting some great stuff!! I would be proud of that Craftsman push lawn mower, that's already a real treasure. I would take that thing down to the hubs and redo it like brand new, and put it away!!! Everything is looking good in your shop!!

Thanks guys I really appreciate the feedback! Maybe I will keep that mower. I like your idea of refurbing it.

I am now at the point where I have plenty of cabinetry and hardware to outfit my space nicely. I just have to fit it in here and there and quit looking at the CL free section and finding more stuff! lol.

It does pay living in the Puget sound. I actually live on the outskirts out in the country but I work from the Canadian border down to middle of Oregon and everywhere in western wa. I am always pre thinking where I'll be working the next day and scouting freebies in those areas!

They're everywhere!

Ok. Here's my latest recovery! Saved it from scrap or whatever! I was excited to get this free. Then I was even more excited to know it had contents! Going to clean it up and repaint it in time. But I think it is so cool. A lady was giving it away so I drove an hour to pick it up.

4th row has one drawer locked. Haven't gotten it open yet so it's a surprise what I'll find!

Has some surface rust but it will clean up nicely. Was sitting in the back corner of this lady's rental for years. She just wanted it gone. Fine by me!

Thanks Gerard!

I'm making big changes now. Put a ton of stuff up on Craigslist to consolidate and unload some of it.

Going to build a platform for the two short laterals with caster's and I have a prime 3/4" piece of maple I'm going to stain and make a bench top for it.

Good times!

Re: My garage, repurposed!

LOL, good times. Reminds me of my early garage days. Getting tons of free stuff making wholesale changes and remodeling all the time. After 12 yrs of having garages( 4 yrs of a single and 8 yrs of current) I've done it all and content just making small changes these days. I've maximized my garage out but still dream about other garages layouts when I see others like a odd shaped 2 or 3car. I enjoy watching you do yours being it seems your doing the same thing I did once before but your finding a lot cooler stuff to start. I would be selective now on your finds keeping long term plans mind. The lateral files and the newest cabinet are great and not easy to come by so difinity keep those and look for matching to add. If worst comes you can always stack vertical to gain space.
