SD: looks like a great day in the garage with your family that is for certain.

just an FYI a lot of members like storing their battery operated drills in PVC that is maybe 3 or 4 inch in diameter with a cut out to hold the drill. they mount it under cabinets usually and cut out a portion so the drill is basically at the ready to use. if you haven't seen any of those on here and can't find one i'll see if I can find some either on GJ or in my old laptop that has a lot of ORGANIZING IDEAS in it.

cheers

Oh yes I’ve seen TONS of ideas including the pvc. Just google diy drill storage images and it shows it all. Not sure if I want to do pvc

5d37f7ac1fcd2104f827f65fcfe95dc3.jpg

or all wood.

ba0e53d9a8ccd9b3a679f5d92d954c06.jpg

I’m kind of leaning to all wood.

My vote is wood. Much classier! Awesome on having the family out in the shop with you and giving the wife one of your drawers. Only thing my wife has in my shop is her bucket with gardening tools and several pairs of her shoes stashed about.

Well, huge progress today cutting boards for the drill storage. All was going good. I was working in the garage, the kids were riding bikes with the neighbor kids while wife and neighbor were visiting in the front yard and then it happened... my older daughter had a bad bike wreck! They were chasing each other and playing with walkie talkies when she wrecked! She can down and hit the pavement and broke her two front teeth! YikeS! You can imagine the chaos that ensued. Everyone panicked when they saw missing teeth and a mouth full of blood from cutting her lip! Luckily she didn’t mess anything else up hitting the pavement. Our neighbors took our younger daughter so we could clean her up and calm her down. I called our dentists emergency line and talked through it and set her up for an appt tomorrow, nothing they could do tonight unless a tooth had actually come out of the socket(which it hadn’t). I don’t think the breaks are that bad considering and they’ll be able to cap them or at worst she’ll have to get crowns. Wow, what an afternoon. She’s a trooper and being super brave, mom is the freaked out one! Sorry, just had to share our horrible event!

On another note I got some deliveries from Amazon today. I found some knockoff 12v batteries for my small Dewalt drill for less than half the price of the dewalts. The originals broke years ago and I’ve been electrical taping them every since. So inconvenient though when you’re getting ready to use t and the battery slides out of place! They have excellent reviews so I tried them out.

Also got a glue bot in. Excited to try this out!

Sorry to hear about the young one. But they are tough and will live through those things easier than us. Good luck with her teeth today. Interesting find on the knockoff batteries. I am going to tell you right now you are going to love that Gluebot. I got mine last year and wish I would have bought it along time ago. They are awesome.

Looking forward to the drill cabinet. I would build one but I only have 1 cordless drill.

SD: sorry to hear about your daughter. i can't off hand recall anything happening with any of our 5 kids regarding missing teeth, but a little chain saw cut on my 15 year old's arm (he's now 42) and a few other things i'm sure happened. BTW it was me using the chainsaw and I still feel bad about that one, but my step son kinda thought it was cool cause he barely felt the cut that needed 40 or more stitches.

i can't recall how old your daughter is, but guessing it's permanent teeth. yes? one of the kids at school was playing in a BBall game and landed on his front teeth and the mom who was a nurse ran out with a glass of milk to put the broken teeth in. i still see that kid (he's probably 35 now) and 17 years later you can't tell he broke his teeth. i'm not sure exactly how his teeth got fixed, but hopefully your daughter's teeth will be good as new before long.

best of luck with your daughter today!!

sounds like you're making great progress on your new drill holder. i'm partial to the Ryobi 18v tools now that they finally have great batteries, but hope your new batteries work as well as others say they do.

take care!!

Thanks guys. She is 8 now and they’re her permanent teeth unfortunately. We heard about the milk thing but couldn’t find the broken pieces. Found them a couple hours later because she had them in her hand and dropped them on the way in the house. What an ordeal. Just counting our blessings that she didn’t get hurt more. Our neighbor is actually her teacher and was out there with her, she has fake front teeth cause she broke hers at a young age too so that really helped our daughter feel better. Lol. She wants to be a teacher when she grows up(at least right now) and loves her teacher to death!

Drives... I’ve always liked Ryobi, I used to work at HD when I was younger. I invested in Dewalts 18v line a long time ago but these days I really like the new Rigid 18v lineup. I’ll keep using mine until I can’t get batteries or they give out I guess, they’re great and tough and I love the little 12v driver. I used to use them as a technician so that’s why I got them at home.

Weekly update:

Older daughter had her dental operation yesterday! We(she) lucked out that Mom found the broken tooth pieces. The dentist was able to use one to patch and the other she was able to make a piece and it looks like it never happened. Of course now she has to be super careful not to break them again! They don’t like to cap or crown kids teeth until their late teenagers and their teeth stop moving so much. The dentist said she’d give us one freebie break fix! The best part is insurance paid for most and it was only a couple hundred out of pocket so that was nice!

The wife helped me add the chalk board labels and then labeled them for some pics on our growler carrier. I also added a bottle opener.

So I bought that warped piece of plywood. Holy Moly the more I cut it the more it warped! Managed to use clamps to get the drill storage station started.

We cut some holes an old 4x4 I found for a candle holder. Just need to stain and she’s going to add some writing.

Mowed the yard today then had a couple Kona’s and bbq’d some blackened chicken and had Asian salad with it for dinner! In the low 80’s today, nice day for sure!

All right! Completed the wall drill storage last night! Came out awesome I think! Made a few tweaks along the way and added the circular saw tray on the end as an afterthought.

Great shopping date with the wifey yesterday! I went to Ross with her to get her some new things and found some goodies!

Black and yellow!

Some anti fatigue mats for the garage!

We hit a Goodwill and They has this Husky truck box for $80! It wouldn’t quite sit flat since I our truck is a crew short bed so I made some spacers with 1 x 4’s painted black.

I couldn’t believe someone would give this to Goodwill. Keys were included!

Made my own mounts with some J-hooks from HD.

Then... the wife made some runs with me at HF to utilize the 25% off sale this weekend. Stocked up on some clamps and free tapes and magnets! Going to do the wood addition mod to the aluminum clamps. Going back today for a couple more. Luckily harbor freight is 15 minutes up the road!

Happy Easter to all! We’re off to Church now.

SD: It's really amazing how quickly our brides approve tool purchases if we actually use them to build and make things. congrats on all the finds and I bet the guy that donated the toolbox just wanted to support a charity just like you did when buying it cause we need more places to help those in need.

HAPPY EASTER

BTW your drill holder organizer looks AMAZING!!!

Spent most of the day with the fam. Got out in the afternoon before family came over for dinner. I started working on walling in the water heater. I’m debating on taking it apart and hinging the wall to the left for future access in case I needed to shut it off or anything. Or thinking of just having an access panel that’s easily removable. Should’ve thought it through more.

What did you do @BJ383SS??? 🤪

SD Mine has a door on the front that is at least 2/3rds of the way. I can access for temp change or shutting it off. The bottom 3rd comes off with 4 screws for yearly maintenance or replacement.

In this photo you can barely see the hinges mortised in the corner.

My last house my HW heater was in a full closet because it was gas and I had an upper wall cabinet hanging right in front that I had to take down to access it and I will never do anything like that again what a pain the ***.

In the top middle of this photo you can see where I did this at the old shop.

sdavis622, great work as per usual..[emoji106]

I would at least make your water heater easily accessible.

Regards

Thank you Sir! I think I’ll be doing that! I’ve got a bin full of hinges I should be able to make work!

Awesome. Thanks, I thought about it after I mounted the first wall. Haha. Oh well, not too far in to make some changes. Thanks for the pics and ideas!

Wow, everything is looking great! The tool storage came out nicely. I'd do something like that but I don't have that many tools! And am a bit wary of storing batteries outside in the winter. Obviously you don't have that problem, haha. How do you like the DeWalt cordless line? I am super happy with their jobsite table saw so far. I'm really impressed with the rack and pinion fence, it makes setting up a cut so easy. My drill and impact driver are Menards Mastercraft brand and they work just fine, but as I'm considering picking up more tools down the line I'm trying to figure out which cordless ecosystem to commit to. I was thinking DeWalt but truthfully I don't have enough experience with different brands to know if or why one may be better than the other.

Thanks! The Dewalt line has been great for me. I chose it because I used to be a technician at the company I work for and they supplied us with all dewalt, that’s how I was familiar with it and has real world experience(dropping them, getting beat up etc). I’ve had my 18v lineup for 10+ years and it’s not going dying anytime soon with my simple shop use.

I also love the contractor saw. The fence is awesome and simple. I just cut some whole sheets pegboard today for a project I finished. Works great!

I will say now... if I was to commit to a tool line now starting off., I’d probably go with the current Rigid line from HD. They have an awesome lineup and are less than Dewalt. With my stuff being 10+ years old I think it was made before Stanley/Black and Decker took over Dewalt. I’m not saying that’s all bad but I’m not sure if the current 20v lineups quality. I love the Rigid stuff and it all gets great reviews. Hope that all helped! Maybe it just confused you. Lol. I think the master craft is ok stuff. I also used to work for Home Depot and know Rigid is great and Ryobi isn’t bad I’m just not a fan of the neon green color.

Finished up a shop project tonight! Hinged the front wall of the water heater enclosure for future access and it turned out solid as a rock!

Davis none of those attachments worked. But I suspect I have already seen them on IG.

I vote +1 on Ridgid stuff. When I bought my first house the only thing nearby was a HD. So that's where I started my purchases. Plus my dad has all the Grey Ridgid woodworking tools from the early 2000's that were made by Emerson I believe and they are all still going strong.

Only thing that I have had to fix is one of the spindle bearings on my 4330 Planer went bad but it was an easy and cheap fix.

SD: looks like you got a ton accomplished while i did my little road trip last week. WELL DONE!!

i'm a bit concerned if that's a gas water heater that the peg board isn't enough air for it. I'm wondering if you shouldn't put in a few baseball size holes in it for some better air flow? your call and thought i'd mention it cause i've got a gas hot water heater inside my house and i've got louvered doors in front of it and the gas furnace.

keep up the great work and nice to see others have noticed your handy work and posted it where others can see it more often.

cheers

Yeah, I’ve been messing around a little. Haha. Got more too I just haven’t posted in a week or so.

It is a gas water heater but I actually vented it at the bottom, it comes out about two inches all the way around the base that the water heater sits on. It is only attached to the two walls. And it doesn’t go all the way to the ceiling so it has about a half an inch of opening on top too. Plus all the pegboard holes. Thinking it should be good.

Looks like you had a fun trip! I thought maybe you were on another GJ break! [emoji23]

I haven’t posted here in about a week or so. A few things happened...

I picked up this shop vac at HD’s spring Black Friday event for $25! I re wired it to a toggle switch to the side of the miter saw and enclosed it. So convenient now to just turn it on. It frees up my other vac for the table saw and router.

Friday night this past weekend I helped my neighbor move some rock(that was a workout!). The $15 wheel barrow my wife picked up ata yard sale came in handy. It’s the big one with two wheels so I hauled twice as much as he did! [emoji6]. Then Saturday I trimmed palms and took a load to the landfill. $4.84 for the trailer load. Not bad.

After the landfill on Saturday and cleanup I went to a coworkers house and picked up the Enco 6” jointer he gave me for free! He’s got a great shop and does a lot of metal work and milling. Some woodworking but said he hadn’t used it in like 12 years and knew I’d gotten into woodworking and could use it. Insisted I take it for nothing and free up room in his shed. AWESOME!

It had some rust on the deck so I cleaned it up today with some WD and wet sanding. Then I made adjustments and dialed the tables in and gave it a few test runs. Two of the blades look good but one has some rough spots so I’m going to watch some videos on sharpening. It did fine in the edge of some 1 x 4 line but when I tried a flat piece of board the bad bladed showed on the surface. All in all an awesome score. I’m going to build a base for it and learn to use a jointer! Some day I’ll upgrade to a bigger or better but this one’ll do just fine for now.

IMG_4691.jpg

IMG_4692.jpg

Tonight I started working on a cross cut sled. I’m happy with it overall for my first one. I’d like to integrate some T-track though for stop blocks eventually. I didn’t glue the fence so I can remove it later and router a slot for some t track.

I need to get better coworkers apparently, free jointer? Very nice.

Haha. I tried to offer him money but no! I think I’ll get him a gift card to HD or Harbor Freight as a thank you. I know he’d probably appreciate that.

Another Co worker gave me this cool Milwaukee tools old computer bag! I think it’s really sweet! I carry a Surface Pro and documents for work and travel. I like the vintage looking stuff!

SD: great solution with the shop vac inside your miter station!!

as you fill up the holes on your pegboard surrounding your water heater it will allow less air and just want you to be aware of that. Maybe a few vent holes the size of a softball or bigger might solve air flow issues, but do a little research on your own if you haven't already cause i've seen some of those fly out of a house like a rocket and not sure exactly why. it's a great spot for long clamps!!

I bet your friend that gave you the free planer would love a cool sign that you and your bride made a lot more than a gift cert, but that's your call.

keep up the great work cause you are definitely in another gear now that your weather is starting to warm up.

Man great score on the jointer. You can get blades on amazon. Any that are 5/8" x 6 1/8" are the standard size. You can pull one of yours and measure it just to make sure.

I have a link for a crosscut sled you might like but beware it is alluring.

What kind of cyclone are you talking about. Like a lid for a trash can or a full blown Cyclone?

Thanks Bret! I was thinking of something like the dust deputy mounted to a lid for my 16gallon metal barrels. Attached to a shop vac. I watched a video of a guy make one out of an upside down traffic cone. Lol. Not sure I want that route but just brainstorming. The dust deputy attachment is $54 on Amazon.

I may order some new blades! What’s the sled you speak of??? A fancy one from King’s Fine Woodworking or another YouTuber? I’m not ready to make a big fancy one. Lol

Ah yes I've had my eye on Rigid, too. Good to know it's well-liked. 100% agree that Ryobi would probably be just fine for me in most cases, but I too cannot get past the neon green.

Can't believe you scored a free jointer!

For dust collection you don't need a cyclone. I ended up getting the Rockler unit (still ~$79) but comes with the whole system including bucket (I didn't have any awesome metal drums available!). The dust deputy seems to be well-reviewed but I didn't like how tall it was on top of the bucket and had the vacuum in/out on top and side. Wouldn't have fit under my bench very well.

You could just build a top for your drum with a bucket lid and some PVC pipe, similar to this:

Or I believe Rockler sells the piping separately if you want to bring your own bucket and lid to the table.

I started making a crosscut sled the other night, too. What did you use for the miter bars? I used some hard maple I had leftover because I wasn't sure if plywood would hold up well over time and cut it to fit pretty tight so the sled doesn't slide that well yet. Hopefully a little sanding and paste wax will do the trick. Also, how tall are your fences? Just curious as I'm deciding whether to use ripped 2x4's or glue plywood together like you did.

SD: I know I can ask maybe too many questions, but your thread needs more pictures of the cool stuff you are doing in your garage if you've been able to get the temps down to below 130 degrees.

it's 90+ up here this week so can't even imagine how warm it is in your part of the world today. it was probably warmer than that outside at 4am wasn't it?

hope all is well in your world and i'm guessing you and the family are really liking the swimming pool.

or are you ready to move back to the PNW and Paradise yet?

cheers

Wow what a jem of a thread SD, I found you yesterday morning when looking for pics of drill storage so have read it right from the start now.

Man have you had some nice scores

Are you still thinking of doing the repurposing as a side hustle like you mentioned a while back or maybe in the future ? Need to experiment with that myself a bit.

I was going to suggest a dust deputy on one of those cans you scored as well. They work great.

We have pretty much the exact same dewalt saws, love the tables you made for them, I have to pack mine away after use and they can be a bit awkward to lift and they always seem heavier at the end of a long day.

Bret made an awesome table saw slide, keen to see how your one comes up as I still haven't made one yet. I've seen a sled hardware kit from one of the better supply stores here which looks good.

And you caught the detailing bug too

Keep up the great work.

cheers GB
