I was wondering what happened with this build. Keep the updates coming, you have quite a project ahead of you that most of us would be thrilled to follow.

Very cool. I agree, please continue to share. There's a gymnasium I drive by often that's boarded-up that I'd love to buy and turn into a shop.

Thanks guys. I am ashamed to say that there hasn't been much progress on the gym/garage lately. I've been too busy working on the things in the garage - like changing out my daughter's Taurus transmission, working on my bikes, and fixing lawn mowers. We've had a particularly wet Spring, and the mowing and raking has kept me pretty busy. I've still got a lot of tuck-pointing to do. I have to install a new 200A electrical service, run the lighting up above, and seal in some of the openings where the starlings have taken over. Promised the other half that I would finish building the kitchen cabinets in the schoolhouse as soon as I could, and I've just been kind of overwhelmed. Pics are coming though.

Hang in there and just keep chipping away at everything. I can relate. I married into a place that has 15years of total neglect. Those dry spells where nothing seems to get done are tough to get through sometimes. And remember to keep Momma happy. "If Momma's happy, everyone's happy. But if Momma ain't happy, then no one's happy!"

That's a big project to tackle and way cool to make it usable space again!! Major points for that.

Hi Tread

I would say that your new old building is more like a Factory than a garage, must be a lot of square foots.

Looking forward to seeing how the inside turns out, that is a perfect space for one of those old time belt drive set ups to power your machines ' Priceless '

I have been working on my shop for 30 yrs to get it right.

By any chance are you by Rantoul IL. as i spent 3 month's there in 63' in tech school at Chanute AFB

Again, I apologize for not updating this journal. Been so occupied with weathering in everything, I haven't had much time for the interior stuff. I've been waiting for the cooler months to roll in so I could get up high in the gym and seal up some of the areas where the starlings and bats have been getting in. Finally, got my buddy to come over with his plasma cutter and help me take the boiler out of the schoolhouse. Took us 2 days. I had tried it with an oxy/acetylene torch, but it was just taking too long and using too much oxygen.

Couldn't find the pics of taking the boiler out, but here's some random pics of things that have been accomplished.
What's a school without a playground?

The beginning of the never-ending story. She chose the granny smith color. :)

I ended up going back and painting the inside the same color as the outside of the cabinet. Door frames and drawers will have a little darker contrasting green. That's what the boss wanted.

Have to have something to cook those marshmellows on. Actually, the grass wasn't growing well in this big spot. I dug down and discovered that there was a huge concrete pad where the merry-go-round had been anchored. I'd already removed a bunch of concrete pillars that anchored the other playground equipment, but this was bigger than I wanted to tackle. So, I build a firepit on it.

Apparently, the merry-go-round was installed in 1936.

Don't worry about splitting the "house" from the garage. It's a package deal...you're going to use the garage to re-do the "house". We want to see both, it qualifies. Back me up on this guys.......
