Hello all. I’m a brand new member. Thanks for the add. I could use some help with with my Grandpa’s air compressor. He had it for at least 40 years though I don’t know how old it actually is. It was working well until 10 years ago when the tank drain plug blew out with corrosion. I want to overhaul the whole thing since it has memories attached to it. I could use some tips and how to find an overhaul kit. I’m not positive who the maker is but the data plate on the electric motor says Wagoner Electric Motor . Perhaps the whole thing is a Wagoner?

Judging by the channel iron feet and platform, I'd guess it's homemade.
The pump is a Quincy QR-X2 - ROC 18 (Record Of Change) vintage is between
1962, which was ROC 12 and 1977, which was ROC 14&15.
Parts should still be available through Quincy.
To find the parts manual, go to www.quincycompressor.com, click on 'products', then on the right navagation bar, click on 'Download Literature', next page, click on the 'GO' button. next page, type in 'X2' in 'Keywords'. When that page opens, you can download the various manuals for free.

Thank you for the great information Tool Tyrant. I’ll follow up with Quincy as you say. Of course now I’m a bit worried about a 40-60 year old homemade, corroded, tank. I guess I could just install a 125psi safety valve on it a be less worried

Get a new tank. Memories are important, but not worth your life.
Pressure vessels must withstand 4x their rated pressure by design.
If you want to keep the old tank at any cost, you could have it inspected and if there is no corrosion except at the bung, have a new bung welded in, then hydrotested.

Good advice Aerospace Eng. Thats exactly what I would like to do. The weld work is an easy fix. The hydro testing might be an odyssey. I used to have my scuba tank sent out for hydrotesting but not sure who would do this on a compressor tank. I’m in Southern California so there’s got to be someone around who would do it.

If a quick online search doesn’t turn up anything, I would ask your locsl compressed gas or propane supplier. All compressed gas bottles have to be hydrotested, as do propane tanks.
Propane tank pressures will be in the right ballpark.

Pressure switches are readily available (Master Tool Repair, Grainger, McMaster-Carr) I would suggest one with a cut-out pressure of no more than 125 psi. The later X2's will pump to 150, but not sure of the earlier models...you best check with Quincy first.
The one strange thing I notice regarding your receiver is the lack of obvious weld bungs.

I suspect the builder ran beads on both sides before assembling the halves together. I think that’s good advice to keep the pressures maintained at 100-125psi. I’ll have a better idea of that once the pressure check is done. I guess as for the pressure switch I will get a modern unit but hope to find one that lends itself well to the vintage style of the compressor. Thanks for the input.

How big is that tank, hard to tell because everything is out of scale and the data plate is painted over.
If you can't get it hydro tested, for a pump that size I would buy a new ~10 gallon tank that has wheels and a handle so you can move it around. I think it's rated at like 1.2 Actual CFM so it's going to take a while to build pressure...

? If it's 24" in DIAMETER X 30" long, it would be closer to 58.8 gallons.
Yeah, it's not 60 gallons... He probably means about 24" high total... Which if the tank is about half that then you get more around 20 Gallons, which looks to be about right...
Here's a couple pics of a single-piston compressor I bodged together for my neighbor. The tank is 13 Gallons... Easily portable and much quieter than oil-less compressors...
