My grandpa made a new beginning in Germany after world war 2 with nothing but a wooden case with only 100lbs of all family goods in it, after the Czech people forced him to leave his home and deported him with his family to Germany.

Until the war he was working as car mechanic, and during the war he was maintaining the tanks and cars and later he was building wood gasifier into the confiscated civil cars. Fortunately he had not to fight. After the war he started repairing cars beneath the road under the open sky. After a while he was able to rent a small garage, but he was still working outside beneath the road, because the garage was so small, that there was only room for tools and spare parts.

Some years later he got a contract with the German mineral oil company ARAL and with VOLKSWAGEN and a accommodation, so he built a gas station and a car repair shop.

As young boy nearly each year I visited my grandparents during summer school holidays for one or sometimes two weeks and I loved to be at their gas station and in the repair shop. This might be one reason, because I think, I have gasoline in my blood. ;)

My grandpa died in the age of 85 and I’ll never forget him and my grandma and the happy time at their gas station.

As I wrote in a thread in the flooring section, I started my garage remake a few weeks ago.

Some years ago I’ve found a picture of a living room with a Ferrari parking in it in the world wide web. Although our living room would be large enough and the window to the back yard would be wide enough to drive a car into the living room, there’s no way, because my wife was absolutely not happy with this idea. :D

So I had the idea, to make the garage to a living room or at least in the style of a living room. The term "man cave" does not exist in my language, but it is describing, what my garage should be.

After I’ve found a very cheap but durable laminate flooring in a local store, I had to start with it.

I’ve worked in my garage nearly every day in my holidays this summer. I not only was making the floor but many other things and so I changed it from a simple prefabricated garage to my man cave.

It is not all done, especially the electric wiring is still horrible, but I think, I can show you first pics.

I’ll do it in several postings, because I don’t know, how to place a picture on a fixed place in the text.

First I’ll show you the picture, which had born the idea of my man cave:

The R8 isn't red, so I took it out for the shot, because I wanted to show all my red cars. :)

PS, what part of Germany are you in?

I'm from Bavaria, near Munich, the capital of the bavarian beer and Oktoberfest.

There's still a lot to do, and I have many other ideas, which I hope to realize.
I think that the pics, which I've posted here will not be the last pics in this thread. ;)

Looks really nice!!! I think it is great that you knew your grandpa so well, grandparents can be great people to know and they usually have a lot of wonderful stories to tell you.

Holy ****, you actually have an R8! I thought you were kidding. Love the floors!

So how will they live up to jacks, oil, welding slag? I'm pretty rough on my floors but have thought about turning half the garage into more of a "showroom".

Update:

My R8 got new tires and after more than a week standing on the same place there are no stains to see on the laminate floor until now.

The laminate floor is like brand new after 12 month, no tire stains or other damage, but I have to mention, that I'm driving my rides only when the sun is shining.

Kein Feuer!

In English....

.....your mechanic cave is looking pretty cool...like the wood flooring.
May I suggest you get your electrical issues in order.
No fires!

The wires are not pretty and not ready, I know, but it works. I'll do it, when the other things are done.

It's all solar powered, low voltage (12V - 24V) and there is only power on the wires, when I'm in the garage. There are fuses at the batteries and fuses at the step-down-circuit from the solar cells. I don't think, that it's dangerous now.

Re: My Grandpa's memorial garage

and here the next pic:

The motorbike is from 1952, it's from my father, and when I was 16, I learned to drive with it.
The TV is fixed with a ball bearing so I can turn it vertical. I'm using it also as a digital-photo-frame, and for vertical pics it's a great improvement.
On the inside of the garage door I've fixed a huge flag of an Italian gasoline company with strong magnets.

Re: My Grandpa's memorial garage

and on we go: That gasoline pump is about 100 years old. I bought it some weeks ago and I'm very proud to have it. I think, that the first gasoline pump of my grandpa perhaps could have been similar.

Re: My Grandpa's memorial garage

WOW, very nice garage! First I think its great that you start this post with a shout out to the grandparents, and the things you remember as a kid. I was wondering what happened to all of his garage stuff, after he has passed? I bet he had some very cool tools from his time.
I love the looks of your man cave, and all the gas station advertisement stuff. The BP sign, where did you get that from? I would like to have one for my wall.
Can you take more pictures of the old gas pump, I have never seen one like that, and I have seen a lot of gas pumps. The old ones that the U.S. had in the old days were glass at the top that had the gallons marked, and you could see the gas.
If you don't mind me asking, what kind of job do you have?
Do you have places around that sell old gas station stuff, other than the computer? We have garage sales around here that are fun, and auctions. They are called garage sales, but sometimes people just put everything in the yard, so a yard sale is almost the same as the garage sale. OK, nice to see your garage.

I was wondering what happened to all of his garage stuff, after he has passed? I bet he had some very cool tools from his time.

My uncle and later my nephew keeped it up until now, but the tools had been replaced from time to time. The room of the shop is still nearly in the same condition like in the times, when my grandpa has been working there.

I love the looks of your man cave, and all the gas station advertisement stuff. The BP sign, where did you get that from? I would like to have one for my wall.

Nearly everything you see in my man cave I've found at ebay.

Can you take more pictures of the old gas pump, I have never seen one like that, and I have seen a lot of gas pumps. The old ones that the U.S. had in the old days were glass at the top that had the gallons marked, and you could see the gas.

I'll try to take more pics, but I'm not able to do this in the next time. Inside the gas pump is empty, I've heared, that there was a was a pump made of brass with one or two reservoirs made of glass.

If you don't mind me asking, what kind of job do you have?

I'm living from hand to mouth. I hope, you understand this description. :)

Do you have places around that sell old gas station stuff, other than the computer? We have garage sales around here that are fun, and auctions. They are called garage sales, but sometimes people just put everything in the yard, so a yard sale is almost the same as the garage sale.

No, as I wrote, nearly everthing is from ebay, but I intend to visit all small gas stations around, before they will close forever, to ask for old stuff, which they need no more.

OK, nice to see your garage.

Again, thank you very much! I'm very proud of my garage (and what's inside :D ).

Thank you very much! If your profession is beginning with a "Dent" and ending with "ist", then we have the same job. :)

I like that you have such a wide range of cars. Do you still enjoy the civic if you also own a R8?

I like the civic CRX very much. This year I've driven the most time with it. (Or have I to say with her? Whats correct in your language?)

I prefer it (her?) and the rabbit always, when I'm only driving short distances, because the R8 needs a long time/distance (depending from the temperature at least 10 miles), until the oil is so hot, that I can push the pedal to the floor. This is still legal in our country, and I'm enjoying it everytime! :D
I love my cars, and so I'm not driving fast, until the engine is warm enough.

And I'm not driving with the Porsche or the R8, when I'm parking in areas, where you have to fear, that anyone is making a scratch in your paint. Here in Germany unfortunately people often are very very jealous. :(

The CRX is very similar to drive like the R8, it's pure fun on a curvy road. The reaction to the steering wheel is phenomenal! The high rev of the engine always let's you feel to drive much faster than you're really driving. And it's light weight like no actual car.

And finally each of my rides has it's own story: The Civic CRX was a unaffordable dream of mine, when I've finished the University in 1990. I've searched a very long time, and two years ago I've found this one with absolutely no rust, first hand and first paint and just 25000 miles.

A great family-history-find for my garage

It was a huge surprise for me some weeks ago, when I've got a old newspaper article from July 1952:

The headline is: "Ingrid is changing spark plugs"
The article is describing how my 14 years old mother is working as a apprentice at my grandfathers garage and gas station. Further the article is describing the hard job of my grandparents.
On the picture she is cleaning the windshield of a car. What a beautiful girl!

I'm a very lucky man! This is a piece of family history. I didn't know, that it would exist.

The article will get a place of honor in my grandpa's memorial garage.
