My home made top for my classic 96 NEW PICS

Not done yet but you get the idea. Didn't have the cash yet to buy a stainless top so with the left over flooring I had I put it to use. I then added a chrome strip of boding molding to the front so all together cost me $15 bucks. Let me know what you think.

Looks good.. I'm guessing thats a laminate judging by the "click together" style. I helped my parents lay some of this in their kitchen about 10 years ago and its held up well with no gouges, etc... now they aren't tossing tools on it all day but ya know. I'll be curious to see how well that ends up holding up.

One of the guys here has kitchen tile on the top of his box... seems to have held up well.

if you glue that down to a this layer of plywood and install an edge (for looks)
you should be able to beat the **** out of stuff on that with no problems

ive always wondered about just getting a surpluss commercial kitchen stainless top to use on a toolbox

i think i might do that to my box!

i wanted to make a butcher block but that will take a ton of effort and probably get the same results as yours

we've got a customer who harvests select hardwoods, and he has butcher block makers that do all our tops. mine's stainless SO, but it came with the repo box or I'd have something repurposed just like you.

its been on for a couple months now and dosent show any signs of abuse so i think it will hold up just fine. I am very happy with the result and i will now have an extra $700 toward the hutch instead of ss top..makes more sense to me.

for a hutch you're going to want to mount those pieces to a piece of 3/4" interior grade plywood and then wrap it with a nice strip of aluminum from HD so it's one piece. the Hutch screws down to it, and loose tongue and groove isn't going to cut it.

That is a great idea. I have a side cabinet that I keep my computer on, found a nice piece of granite from a bath installer that had finished edges. Cost me 3.47 for a couple of cutoff wheels for masonary.

How did you build this? What did you use as a base? Did you glue the flooring down?

its going to be similar to this:
IMAG0451.jpg

just a different toolbox, i used the same type of build once i saw his done i had to do the same thing......i used 3/4 plywood, then 3/4 hardwood and wrapped the edges in 1 1/2" aluminum andle painted black, glued the boards together and to the 3/4 underlayment, solid as a rock, takes a beating
