My Homemade Ridgid Vac Muffler

WIP, I didn't want to pay the $15 plus tax for a marginally quieter muffler from Ridgid - a $15 piece of round plastic tube with a piece of foam at the opening. Took the idea from a bunch of students doing a project on quieting down their Porter Cable Euro vac. What's weird is that even though Ridgid explicitly says that my vacuum features scroll noise reduction, it is nowhere as quiet as the bigger 14-16 gallon models. :dunno:

Plan is to get a 1-1/2" ABS coupler which has an outer diameter of exactly 2-1/4" which will fit in any Ridgid vacuum blower/exhaust port. I will add a couple inches of 1-1/2" pipe to the coupler (in order to clear the vacuum body), then add a 1-1/2" to 2" expander (to slow down airflow and reduce some noise). I attached a myriad of compact 45 and 90 degree elbows, then finally another expander, this time a 2" to 3" in order to create a double wall muffler. The outer pipe, as alluded to, will be 3". A smaller 2" pipe will directly connect to the 2" portion of the expander and run inside the larger 3" pipe. This smaller pipe will have numerous holes drilled into it so that sound waves and air can interact with the layer of mineral wool/fiberglass in between the two concentric pipes. This 'chamber' will be roughly 10" in length (so it isn't longer than the vacuum). A 3" cap will be attached to the end, with a 2" hole drilled in the center so that the smaller pipe can poke out and exhaust air. The protruding part allows for a hose to slide on, thus the original blowing function is preserved.

Sounds complicated? Great! I have no idea if this works at all, and it'll probably end up costing more than the Ridgid muffler, but hey, why the hell not? Onwards to the pictures!

I am missing the 1-1/2" coupler in this picture (only have the expander, you can see how it's angled upwards because it is contacting the vac body), forgot to buy it! I will get it tomorrow, as well as all the necessary pipes.

I realize this is pretty ambitious, so I present to you the $3 version that does half of what the OEM muffler does (redirect and lessen airflow, though my version does the former mainly).

I'm going to experiment with 3" and 4" piping, the latter allows for more damping material, and should reduce noise even further at the cost of portability.

Most of the central vacuum mufflers rely on a layer of porous foam to absorb sound, not sure if this will cut down on suction.

Update! Mocked up the 3" and 4" pipes, looks like a Cherry Bomb muffler heh. I am going to try to damp the inner tube with pillow stuffing and carpet padding, because I have plenty of both.

How so? The diameter of all the couplers are at least an inch bigger than the outlet from the vacuum. If anything, it should flow even easier. The bends should be negligible because of the increased size.

No offense, but that tangle of ABS is rapidly approaching the size of the shop vac... 9 fittings for $3? not around here... to avoid spending $15 on a proven solution?... I'm all for a DIY approach, but I don't get this one.

I know a bunch of you are going 'huh?', and 'this is retarded', but trust me it works. You can buy the exact same thing from stores that sell central vacuum parts, Beam calls it a 'sound-off' muffler. It is really a glorified 3" pipe with foam lining the inside. Cost? $15 without any couplings or fittings. The muffler is only as long as the shop vac.

Yep, it blows out the back. Ultimately I just want to reduce the speed of the air by increasing the size of the nozzle. I may go one step further and copy what Ridgid did on their muffler and sandwich a piece of porous foam between some mesh at the outlet to cut down on the flow even more.

Interesting. I would like to see the difference as well.

Make sure to post a "with muffler" and "without muffler" video.

Either way, let's hear the sound difference.

Will do that for sure, right now it definitely made a noticeable difference, sound levels are logarithmic, so even if I reduce the decibel level by one or two, the apparent levels heard by your ears is approximately 10 times less. Also will do a suction comparison.

The $15 one from Rigid doesn't do a damn thing to attenuate the sound either, I have one.

I know. :lol_hitti I got pissed when I through the $15 piece of plastic on and it did nothing.

I have some semi completed pictures, still have to stuff the gap with filling and drill holes in the 2" pipe. I tried the 4" pipe and it looked hilarious and comical. As it stands right now, it looks like a potato cannon. I think I am going to replace a few of the elbows with one 180 degree elbow, should improve flow.

The issue is not inherently with the piping, but with the amount of carpet and baffling you use. Slowing down the velocity of the air leaving the motor will increase the back pressure which will put more strain on the motor and shorten the life of the vac.

Nice job, It looks cool but overengineered. Hope it works out with out killing the vacuum.

Interesting approach. I like it and that you are willing to dig in and do it. Don't let the nay slayers :evil: get you down. I like this thread and in this case, it's not the destination but the journey. You are learning something and ultimately will have taught others what you learned, and maybe you will come up with a better mousetrap!

I'd opt for a remote switch and longer hose......but I do admire your plethora of spare time! ;)

Spare time? HA! If I had a lot of spare time, most of my projects would've been done a long time ago LOL.

Final product, will take a video tomorrow. And maybe compare it with a perforated inner pipe. The best part if it doesn't work? I can return everything (other than the piping)!

what about dropping the foam and stuffing, and shortening the inner pipe chamber by an inch or so, drilling 50 3/8" holes in it, then capping it. put it in the larger pipe, and use the vent cap like you have. then put one large 90* elbow on the end, and point it down at the ground.

with a chamber, but no stuffing, you wont cause a ton of back pressure. using stuffing, no matter the pipe size will decrease suckage.

Right now the stuffing doesn't contact the exhaust in any way, it's there as sound insulation. Only when I run a perforated pipe with hundreds of different sized holes will it affect the flow. I will run 3 tests then, one neglecting stuffing altogether.

If you are only using the foam (I'm assuming this is an open cell foam like air cleaner material?) as a liner and its' not in the direct air flow path its restriction will be far less that if it was through the foam. It will cause some back pressure as it is a source of drag.

I'm going to be interested in the results!

since this all motor and flow noise, im going to say that stuffing that is not in contact with the flow wont affect the sound much. i may be wrong though. i am curious with what you figure out with this project.

i would bet that the chamber i describe, or one very similar would dampen the air flow noise about as much as you could without impeding the efficiency of the pump. a chamber that redirects and reduces the air velocity should be all you need. after than, all you are going to hear is the sound coming through the vac case itself, the motor and air flow noise inside. not much can be done about that part of the noise.

Here are the sound tests, AFAIK the effect on suction is negligible, feels the same to me. The biggest obstruction is the small diameter hose.



Takes away the high pitched noise of the exhaust IMO. I did end up with this:

Noticeable difference, but not sure it's significant on overall DB from the vid.

I do like that the shrill sound was mitigated, that sort is often more damaging then the lower pitches.

How is it in person?

so is there stuffing around the drilled tube?

if you shorten the inner drilled tube a few inches, and cap it on the exhaust end, so that the capped drilled tube ends 3" inside the larger tube, and cant flow right out the end. this will be forcing the air through all the holes drilled, slowing it, and redirecting it twice, then 90* toward the ground at the end.

from what i can see, you essentially have a glass pack type tube goin on now right? or is it reverse of how i explained? with the capped end inside, and flows into the drilled tube instead of out of it.

That would've been a great idea had I not gone ahead and glued everything together...I should've grounded the ridge inside the 2"-3" coupler down so the 2" pipe can pass through all the way to the 180 degree U elbow. But I didn't, and did it the other way round so I can't support the 2" pipe. Dur. It's really more of a 'let's see what could be done with the **** in my basement' sort of project.

And yeah, it's very noticeable in person, my phone isn't great at picking up noises. It got rid of the high pitched frequencies which were my main targets, I could work with the vacuum if the pitch was low, but it isn't.

Yes this is a prime example of how to NOT post pictures! ALL the photo hosting sites are garbage and will shut down or change locations totally destroying any connections. We have as do all the forums on the internet thousands of dead threads with no pictures or pictures of kittens licking themselves.

Please everyone this can all be avoided by posting all photo's directly to the forum. Then as long as the forum exists so will your pictures. It's just a shame all the fine information that has been lost/destroyed by these garbage tech companies with nothing being done about it.

No idea what the OP's contraption (as it sounds) looked like but the "mufflers" sold for shop vacs pretty much do that. I have one on my Craftsman shop vac. It doesn't muffle the sound which I was aware of. It diffuses the exhaust so it doesn't blow concentrated air on things nearby which is the reason I wanted it for.

Now if you have noticeable debris blowing out the exhaust then there's something wrong with your vac. The exhaust should be passing through the vac's filter before exiting.

I recent got a new vacuum from Aldi and it is a little noisy. I made up a muffler using stainless steel scrubbing pads and pvc pipe and it didn’t change the noise level much, As I investigated further I found the majority of the noise seems to be coming from two air cooling outlets for the motor. I might try to put some breathable foam in there . to see if it helps

He just recently found a new video I do have an adapter some where I wonder if in theory my new ideas as a poor mans method would work just tape in the wide end of an redcuing adapter to sponges than insert in to my shop vac something similar to this thoughts /ideas please thank you :
maybe zip ties instead of tape on the sponges so as not to impede air flow as much.

It’s an age old trick to stuff coarse steel wool into your motorcycle exhaust pipes outlet(s) for a reduction in sound output.
