so, i bought some of these planetary axles for my mud truck.....

mini-DSC04662.JPG

but they're heavy with a low pinion.... so i decided to cut them apart and graft the knuckles out onto a 2.5 ton rockwell center section.

originally the plan was to weld the cast knuckle onto the 2.5 ton housing. i tried every combination of rod/pre heat/post heat, etc that anybody would suggest. i got some pretty good results. i think i can weld up cast just as good as anybody else at this point.... but in the end, i was able to remove the test pieces with a 3lb sledge after ~30 hits. that's just unacceptable.

here's a couple of the test pieces....

so, it was decided that i would attempt to make my own "C" .... after a bunch of time making jigs, alignment bars, and figuring out other stuff.... i ended up with this.

(sorry, i didn't take great pics during this)

here is the "C" welded onto the 2.5 ton housing with the planetary from the knuckle out installed.

from this point i added some gussets from the "C" to the axle tube. i'm going to go look for the pics now, as they're not in the thread that i'm copying all this from. (i haven't updated it yet)

Cool fab, but talk about low gear. 6.72:1 in the chunk and 2:1 in the hubs. Sounds like it will be more suited to crawl then spinning tires.

3.5:1 in the hubs.... 24:1 overall in the axles..... which is needed with 72" tires.

i think i'm going to end up with somewhere around 4:1 in my transfer case, because i've got a stock motor.

how much do those tires go for?
they look ungodly expensive

you don't want to buy them new. :lol_hitti

used can go anywhere from $1000 to $3000 for a set.

Is that truck actually road legal in Florida (I see the plates on it)

oh hell no! :lol_hitti

I would say there is a good chance of it. They run all sorts of crazy stuff down there due to the swamp. And he could always put 44 inch tires on it.

the new setup you see here.... with 44" tires on it, in overdrive banging off the rev limiter at 6200rpms would will be 15mph. :bounce:

... and that's with only 3:1 in the transfer case. i might actually go to 4:1.

you can use a floor jack and a block of wood, but usually we use a fork lift.

Ok I guess I didn't ask my question clearly. What do you do out in the field if you need to jack it up?

usually somebody has a piece of equipment if you need to pick it up for whatever reason. (front end loader, backhoe, excavator, etc)

i have seen people use bottle jacks before though.
