that is one kick azz shop that you're building. It ought to be a pleasure to do some projects in. I really like the tool storage, I wish I could afford that many tools, oh well a few at a time no one will notice

Steveo - you lazy MoFo!!!! I can't believe you haven't taken some time and posted some - or all - of your shop build pics on here! I just saw the link ('cause I'm always just skimming for photos) to find out a whole SLEW of build, tool and project pics that I (and likely 100's of others) have missed!

Come on - show that stuff to the rest of us - with commentary!!

e-tek has more or less shamed me into adding to this thread. Many of the follow-on projects are posted here on GJ in one-off "I did this today" postings, but they don't tie back to the shop build.

So . . . .

I ran lots of power:

Receptacles everywhere, and R21 insulation in walls:

Sheet-rocked (hired that out):

Installed lighting and heat:

Had a driveway installed:

Put R60 blown-in insulation in the ceiling:

Built a workbench:

I ran my air-line plumbing using all 3/4" black pipe, routed around the shop using unistrut lag-bolted to trusses/studs:

Added a couple of hose reels:

Added a 'fridge:

Tossed that and got a smaller 'fridge, that I put on a shelf:

Installed over-bench cabinets:

And pallet racking:

Built up a new compressor (IR T-30):

Put the compressor (and a bunch of other stuff) up on the pallet racking:

Built a cabinet for my gas torches and accessories:

And subsequently moved that to a different location:

Re-purposed my old Snap-On set to hold my lathe and mill tooling and precision tools:

Re-located the parts/supplies storage drawers under the pallet racking:

Brought in my press, parts washer, and along the way swapped out the Rong-Fu mill/drill for a Grizzly knee mill:

And basically filled the space up.

Quick questions on the pallet rack. How long is EACH one of the racks? The reason why I ask is because when I've looked at them in the past I couldn't find one that was bigger than 5 or 6 feet long. I can't tell whether you bought them like that or you made your own bars. Do you plan on putting anything up top? Any ideas on what the weight capacity will be up top?

Edit- just looked at your other pics. I see you did put stuff up top but wondering what the overall weight capacity is.

Hopefully the OP will answer as well but my buddy has several sets of these pallet racks in his storage unit. The ones he has are I believe 10' long, 12' high. I did a search and unit that looks very similar says the weight capacity is 38,400lbs. We've got several front cuts off cars stacked on these units.
To span the beams we're using 4x4s. The lengthwise beams have a lip on them to allow this. Hope this helps!

38,400 lbs? that's close to 20 tons. 38,400 sounds like a typo.

The pallet rack uprights are generally available in 36", 42", 48" and sometimes 54" depth.
They come in heights from 8' to 24' or more.
My uprights are 36" deep and 10' high.

The horizontal beams come on stock lengths of 6', 8', 10' and 12', and in various weight capacities.
One bay of mine are 8' long and the others are 10' long.

Each pair of horizontal beams are rated for 4000#, so each of my bays can cumulatively support 12,000#. Taller, heavier beams are available than can indeed support much more that that.

I have another set in my attached house garage:

They are very convenient for consolidating a lot of heavy stuff.


I don't know where you are located, but just about every metro area has a used pallet rack dealer.

Steevo- thanks for the info. When I looked at pallet racks from Northern Tool I don't remember seeing 8', 10' and 12' sizes. I just assumed they didn't make them that big. A quick search on craigslist does confirm they make them the sizes you are talking about.
