My Incessantly slow 30x40 pole barn progress.

This will be my ever slowing project thread for my 30x40 pole barn garage. This will take a good amount of time to get taken care of as money is certainly a gargantuan issue.

After many cold years of working on car outside I've decided it's time to bite the bullet and build this thing as I can spare the money. I've been pricing all my framing materials out and have a price list of 2900 this is with 20 6x6 Treated. I am going to knock this down to 14 footers and go with a 10 foot ceiling. I'm hoping to run a 20 foot Attic Truss section along with a 20 foot Scissor truss section. Still looking into code for an idea on what is necessary for my area.

Well up to today I got out and started plotting the ground for some layout ideas. Spoke with the land owners and they are happy with the placement. I broke ground today...and a shovel. ( Little side note. My boss is an excavation company and his son-in-law is an excavation company, but I'm stuck digging this giant beast by hand. ) I'm got to grade it out quite a bit for the location I've chosen. One side of the building is a good 2.5 feet higher than the other side. On with some pictures. Not many as 3 hours hand digging in clay really kills a guy.

Poor shovel broke on me at .5 hours. Guess I overworked it pulling up some clay.

This is at the one hour mark. Shows a little bit of the scale but not real well. At this point I'd already had a 1/2 gallon of water put into me as it was in the upper 70's. I know that's not all that hot, but this is some tough stuff.

This is me at the 3 hour mark. Was about 5PM and I had to quit for the day as my wife was leaving and my daughter wanted me.

Well I hope you guys enjoyed the quick intro to my ever lasting project. Updates will be incredibly slow, and progress will often seem halted, but I assure you my posts will show up...eventually.

Missoula is a beautiful area.
By the looks of it, you may have a neighbor or two with a tractor.
Have you asked around? Some may help you with their tractor for an hour for a case of beer.

Hehe sadly looks are quite deceiving. The large building across the way is a church. The house to the left of said building is an elderly lady with no tractors, and the large fenced area to the right of church is a auto graveyard of sorts that is closed to public. I think I'll be talking with my bosses son-in-law about coming in for a favor and helping me get this leveled out. Thanks for stopping by.

Been digging for an hour out here and while I don't have any pictures just yet, I will post some later this evening. I'm in the process of plotting down my grade from one corner to the next for a level section to work off of. I've determined that the deeper I get the more compacted this dang clay is. Looks like I'll be down about 4 to 4.5 feet at the end. Going to beg my boss one more time tomorrow at work to borrow a backhoe and the skid steer. This is grueling work.

Long time no see GJ. I haven't stopped working on this big ol project, but another almost more important project kind of popped up. I am currently living in a single wide mobile and was given a second mobile with the same layout that I got permits to move right in next to mine and create breeze ways. I will get some pictures of this later in August as I have to have the other mobile moved by mid month.

Onto the current Pole Barn progression. My boss finally caved and is letting me rent his Cat 980. Now this is no small machine! It's by far way too large for the job at hand, but has done a wonderful job of moving a majority of the dirt so I can have my uncle-in-law come in with his back hoe to finish up. My only day off in the last few months will be tomorrow and a lot of work will be done getting everything finished off for both the mobile and the pole barn.

The above image is merely one hour with using this giant machine! Beats the heck out of shovels!

This image is about one and a half hours after starting. I've got a lot of finishing work to do, but am glad to have gotten this far. Taking the 980 back tomorrow evening and will be happy to have this ready for poles.

Im glad you got rid of that shovel , If it were me Id get a side job somewhere doing something your good at for good money, then pay someone to do the backbreaking work on your building. i once thought I could do everything myself, then I learned I didnt have to do EVERYTHING myself

Absolutely sorry for the missing person. I've been working something fierce on the ranch and haven't had time to post much on this progress. I did get the second house moved up next to mine, but after that started working crazy hours getting ready for fall/winter. I haven't even had time to work on merging the two mobiles. I did however have time to create a few renderings of the plans I've got for the pole barn. I'm currently in discussions with a local builder to see what we can get taken care of. Well to keep a little teaser going here's the renderings.

This is the view from the outside minus trim and the apron.

This is a view looking into the doors opened up to show scale with my "truck". The truck is scaled to the size of a 94 extended cab long box.

This image depicts the building minus side/back walls. As you can see the stairs are too high as I lowered the loft floor about a foot to add upper head room.

This image is looking in from the left overhead door towards the empty compressor room. The tool box in the back is the US General 30" 11 Drawer to show some scale it is 53 1/16" tall.

View from the right hand overhead door. Truck pulled into the garage to show scale. The bottom of the loft floor sits at 6'4" above the concrete. I know this seems low but I am only 5'11" and this space under loft will be tool storage and sit down work benches.


The overall size of the shop will be changed to 40x40 with 14' walls. This is a small teaser as with winter hitting here I won't be able to accomplish anything for a while. I promise this thread will not go to the waste side. It is in my destiny to build this shop!

A good year after this is built I will be building a 12x12 butcher room for when we harvest our game during hunting season. It will have a small entry area from outside to allow inside shoes to be put on, and there will be no entry from inside the shop.
