My insulation score. UPDATE!

I went to one of my local big box stores (don’t ask which one) and was checking the price for ridged insulation for my pole barn walls. ½” foil faced foam was $10. ¾” foil faced foam was $13; 2” was $25, no surprises. I looked at 1” foam and it was $6.49 a sheet! Told my wife this must be a mistake. I called a clerk over and asked what was up. She said that the price was valid. I asked if I could order more than what they had on hand. She wrote down the item # and said to order whatever quantity I wanted. When I went to pay, the receipt had ¾” thick for the size but only $4.99 a sheet. I thought well I would rather have 1” but at $5 a sheet I didn’t care. While shopping for other stuff the original clerk tracked us down at the other end of the store and said she could not order any more as it was a closeout, but she could get 40 sheets from another store and she pulled 10 sheets aside from her store.
It took a week for them to get it, and all this time I was wondering if I was getting ¾” or 1” when I went to pick it up I was happy to find out it was 1”!!!!!! Score! Being strapped for cash this will really help me out getting my shop going at least I will be able to keep a little heat in now.
FYI 50 sheets of insulation looks kinda silly being towed by a small car, but hey I got a bargain.

Sounds like a great deal! Is that expanded or extruded polystyrene and do you know the R-value?
Thanks, Dave

This day and age you have to be on the lookout for bargans. A few years ago I rebuilt a small scotty camper. It originally had plywood walls but I wanted some insulation. I tore it down to the metal trailer frame and rebuilt it from the ground up. I made a skeleton type frame so I could put some of the styrofoam sheets in it. I traded a guy some 3/4 by 3 boards for a load of 4x4 styrofoam. I hadd enough to do that 13 ft scotty and a 17 ft camper as well. I rebuilt the scotty and was in it one day in the winter when it was 20 degrees.I used a small space heater and it was about 70 in about 5 minutes. I have had good luck with foam sheet insulation. The times I have used it I think it actually worked better than the fiberglass insulation. You will not itch like you do with the fiberglas thats for sure.

it is not the premium closed cell stuff, it is the cheaper stuff. R-4 for 1" thick.
around here I have not seen closed cell foam board with foil on it. Cellotex went into recievership a few years ago.

regardless $5 a sheet for 1" thick is a bargain.

Great score. That is a good deal on the material and while not the end all it will go a long way while on a tight budget to take some initial steps.

Re: My insulation score. UPDATE!

They got more stock of the 1” sheets in and the price dropped to $4.98 a sheet.
I picked all they had. I now have enough to put a full 2” in all of my walls.
If they get more in I will by 48 more sheets to do a full layer for the ceiling.

I drove down to Saginaw to pick up the 2-ton harbor freight aluminum racing jack (reg. $199 0n sale for $119+20% coupon< $99) I took the trailer with me incase a different store had the same deal. Luck was with me and I picked up 48 more sheets. (They have six sheets left.) Since I now have all the sheets I need, I can reveal that the box store was LOWES. I had forgotten my 10% coupon on the first purchase but used them on the last two; so 86 sheets were purchased at $4.48 per sheet!
I now have a huge pile of insulation waiting for me to pour the floor in the shop. Now I can do a full 2” in the walls and put up 1” on the ceiling. When I have the extra funds I can ad loose fill insulation above it.
Now I need to find a way to buy the just the plastic buttons from the button cap nails, I can put them on 3” screws. I have not seen button cap screws longer than 2”. It is a pain to take the caps of the nails just to throw the nails away.
If anyone knows where to just buy the caps let me know.
