so I like to watch CL for deals. like many of you it has become a hobby so to speak
so late last year I spotted this on CL and got a little excited other than about the price. he started at $450, then $400, and listed several time every few weeks with apparently little response. so then he dropped the price to $300 and I called. he was honest about the box and I will say the box is definatly used up or beat. when I spoke with him he was firm on the $300 so I didnt even go look. I saw it listed several times for $300 and no takers.
latly I have though about calling and offering $200 just to see if he would take it (but I had doubts) when all of a sudden earlier this week it pops back on CL listed for $200 and I had the morning off. I called him and headed out.
he is the original owner of both and they are dated 1975 and 1976.
they need a lot of work to get to the shape I am willing to accept my stuff in but oh well whats another project.
I spoke with him a little bit and offered $150 and he took it.

so what I really wanted was the bottom box and I am not sure what I am going to do with the top yet but it will likly get sold
the paint on both is beyond saving, they are not rusted but both have some dents (mostly the bottom box) the top is actually in good shape metal wise but the bottom has some stress cracks I will need to weld up. the frame on the bottom is not welded or attached to the box, he made that because he didnt want to pay the snap on price for the casters when they got broken from rough surface conditions where he works. I suspect that is also a partial cause of the cracks

so now it begins.....

Those are both good boxes, just need a little TLC. Amazing what some fresh paint will do. Get some good quality paint using the PPG paint code that Snap O gives.

Nice score. I have both those boxes in slightly better condition. I just hit them with steel wool and WD40 and put them to work.

I like that combo, owned a pair like that for years, and recently sold the KRA300.

I couldn't part with the KRA61 though, it's a great top box :D

rsanter,

That top box is a gem and looks to be in good condition. It's also a piece of history and was made to last a lifetime or two.

Keep it, clean it, lube it, and load it up with your best tools. It's worth way more as a user than it is as a resale.

Do the right thing here, you won't regret it. Please.

Nice, congrats on the box

I have seen that listed for a while, glad it went to a good home. That top work surface that came with looked interesting. How bad are the cracks?

the cracks will need welded up which I can do. there are also some other holes drilled in the box that will get welded up.
currently the box is a little out of square in the front opening because of the cracks and the direction he was always pushing the box

I agree with all that. AND........it's a box that when filled, One tough guy can lift. Better off with two guys, then it's an easy move, especially after I take 15+lbs. of hammers outa' the bottom drawer .

I have had a couple of those top boxes over the years, yes they are great. However I already have a couple of it's slightly larger cousins that I use so this one I am having a hard time thinking of a use for.
I do have a specific use for the bottom box and that is to turn it into a valve grinding station. All of my valve grinding tools and some of my engine building tools will go into the bottom box. If I can find a couple of drawers to fit into the bottom section I hope it will hold all of my engine building specific tools

You've got a keen eye for quality bargain. Perserverance paid off with a definitely earned . . . . .
YOU **** !!

Top box fully restored can be a real keeper. Would love to see before and after restoration. GJers are sure envious of your score. Matched set fully restored would be awful nice!!
