I got this one from my Grandfather too. I tried to show all phases with the restoration. It is a 60's Craftsman 6500 hand box. It was in very rough shape when I started it But I think it turned out ok. Still learning how to do a proper restoration. I messed up the nameplate when I tried to drill out the rivets. I have a Buddy who made me a sticker to replace it. I bought all new hardware for the box. (that is whole nother story for a later date). Again more money spent the it's worth but I am going to give it to my son after I fill it with tools. It will be his first set of tools and box. So tell me what you think.

I sprayed the inside of the box with Duplicolor Bedliner. The paint that I used was Rustoleum Hammer paint (Silver)

Neat job and a great present. Where do you get duplicolor bedliner and what's it cost? Is it kind of soft like rhinoliner or a little harder like lineX? Your buddy did a good job on the sticker.

Nice job! I have a vintage "Union Super Steel" box very similar to yours, that I am looking to restore.

Where did you get your new hardware? (clasps, handle, etc.)?

Thanks!

Step 1. A bath in the parts washer.
Step 2. Media blast all the rust off (lots of it to)
Step 3. Another bath in Parts washer to get all the media sand out.
Step 4. Sand.
Step 5. Sand some more.
Step 6. Hammer and dolly dents out
Step 7. Prime (rustoleum primer)
Step 8. Sand
Step 9. Paint
Step 10. Wait for Freaking hardware to come in from Sears. Awful experience with ordering from Sears parts direct.
Step 11 Put sticker on and stand back and compare to beginning picture.

I got the Bedliner at Advanced Auto Parts for about 7 to 8 bucks a can. I used 2 cans with several coats being applied. It is more like paint with a texture to it, but it does the job really well. As far as the sticker I can get more if anyone needs them. Not sure what the cost is but I can find out.

I would suggest to order early. They get backordered alot. Find a box that most resembles your box. If it is not a Craftsman then you have to match them as best you can.

That looks great. When you're ready to tell the story about where you got the hardware I'll be listening. I have an old toolbox that needs new hinges and I don't know where to get them, or what sort of riveting tool to use.

[edit] looks like I posted a little too late, thanks for the searspartsdirect information.

The rivets do not come with the hardware. I found some bolts that have smooth heads on them. I found them disguared at work being thrown out and because I am a Bolt & Nut freak i picked them out before they were thrown away. They work great. The original rivets are not like the ones you can buy at the hardware store ( atleast not to my limited knowledge). So that is what I used the bolts.

Did this one years ago. Originally grey, spray bombed gloss black. Has held up fairly well. Just taped up the hardware, handle, etc.
