My Lista / Vidmar Build...

For 25 years have been doing mechanical work, starting with bicycles, and moving on to full offroad fabrication work and now onto to racecar and general maintenance stuff.

I have amassed a decent collection of tools over the years. I have always stored them terribly, in a mixture of different brands of boxes and carts, with side lockers, and never enough room or the space/layout area I have needed to store them correctly. My tool box setup has been quite embarrassing honestly for the amount of high dollar tools and equipment that I have acquired over time.

I have ALWAYS lusted over Lista/Vidmar setups I would see at dealerships or high end repair shops, and had always told myself that someday I would make it happen. Someday I would get me a bank of Lista cabinets, and it would be the last set of boxes I would ever have. Something that I could pass down to my son when I'm gone.

A friend of mine, Matt, is a serious Lista/Vidmar guy, and had always wondered why I never picked any up. Mostly it was because I could never begin to afford the 6-10 cabinets that I wanted to build my empire out of. Never got lucky enough to come across someone giving some away, and I surely would never pay retail value for them. Do you realize how many mismatched, garbage tool boxes I could buy with that kind of money, lol.

So, flash back to two weeks ago, and I'm perusing the ebay, as if I have nothing more important to do. And I see a listing for a red Lista cabinet, then I see a sister unit, and then another sister unit... and holy ****, they are only 1.5 hours from me. I bypass the auction and call this guy on the phone. We strike a deal. The package is to include this...

1 single cabinet 28" - 9 drawer
1 single cabinet 28" - 8 drawer
1 double cab 56" on a stand (two 28" cabs) - both 8 drawer (butcher top)
1 single extra wide 56 - 5 drawer (butcher top)

After arriving, I made him an offer for another taller Vidmar unit that he had there on site. The original minty green, 14 drawer, 30" wide. This one I was just as excited about as I plan to use it to get rid of all the bins and ****** drawers of hardware and small parts I have everywhere.

Here they are strapped down on the trailer leaving Louisville last week.

Next was the task of unloading, rough cleaning, removing drawers and then lining them up on the wall for sizing. After that I spent countless hours cleaning drawers, faces, frames, floors, bearings, slides, tracks, etc... Prep-All, windex, and 3800 micro fiber towels.

Then I put all the drawers in, and stepped back to look at the glory that it is.

And it is amazing what a new set of drawer liners can do for a tool box. This thrills me how good this looks. I have plans in the future to actually vinyl wrap the boxes and cabinets in Automotive grade vinyl wrap. Mostly because it is such a nightmare to paint or powdercoat these things.

Now for the really exciting part....

What do you put on top of 14' of Lista cabinets? Butcher blocks? Formica? Sheet metal? Hell no.

You harvest a 1000 pound, 14.5' x 2.5" slab of Bohlke Angelim Pedra from Brazil and have it shipped in to your local custom wood artisan. In my case I use John Batchelor, from Single Batch Designs in Cincinnati, OH. He's a good friend of mine, and a creator of the most amazing wood stuff you have ever seen.

Here's some shots of us picking up the wood from the importer and transporting to the shop.

And now we are down to a close-to-finished cut. Our final dimensions are 169.5" x 31.5" for the top. This will be covered in self leveling epoxy for a long lasting and durable finish.

Stay tuned, more updates coming soon.

At this point I'm not sure if it was the cabinets, the beautiful wood top, or the single batch sticker on the back of the truck (I'm leaning this way with a glass of bourbon in my hand) but I'm in.

John is a friend of mine, so he's helping me out quite a bit. But retail on a box top like this would probably get into the $4-5k range.

So, had a drawer that had one smashed face. Looks like a forklift got ahold of it or something. Spot welds weren't snapped, but they were stressed quite a bit. So I pulled it out and went to town on it at the welding table with a 3 pound hammer, brass drift, and a 2x4 drift. Got the face back pretty flat, but the pull handle is unsalvageable. Kinked in too many spots. It's never gonna come back. Where do I find one handle pull?

And I have started the transfer of tools from my many other mismatched boxes to my new drawers, slowly, and in the process organizing better and getting rid of **** that I don't need/use. Here's a few of them. Please don't make fun of my mismatched brands of tools etc.... it's what I got, lol.

Lista is made in the US (near Boston possibly?) and all the orders are made to order. So, there's a good chance they have a drawer pull they'd sell you.

Awesome score. Those cabinets are pretty fantastic.

Thx!! wasn't sure if you could still buy pulls for cabinets from the 90s. Doesn't hurt to ask.

Subscribed for sure! I absolutely love the route you chose for the top. I can't even explain how jealous I am of all those cabinets. Every time I see Listas/Vidmars on CL or eBay I always sigh and hope someday I can score a reasonable deal on some.

I do ****. I know this. I'm into them for $3500. Not an amazing deal, but I did ok. I'm not concerned about the price as much as I am thrilled to just finally be building my dream tool setup. I don't care what it all ends up costing me at this point honestly.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but those are the old style Lista aluminum drawer pulls that attach to the face (like Vidmar).
The new pulls are formed as part of the top of the drawer with an aluminum cap. The best way to find an old one is in a fellow GJer's secret stash. I have some extra Lista/Vidmar parts to trade anyone who can help him out with an old style face mounted aluminum pull.

You are correct. Screws into the face of the flush mounted drawers. My 56” wide drawers have the new style built-in handles. Thx for the link!!
