Well, I cleaned up the garage a little bit and I figured it's about time to show it off.

It's a single car garage, but I don't think either of my daily drivers have spent more than a couple of nights in there.

I've rebuilt a couple of engines (VW Diesels), done engine replacements, and am currently doing a '74 VW Super Beetle resto/rod job. It's enough for now...no I take that back, I need at least 4 times as much for what I want to do, but for now it's all I can afford.

It has a couple of low end flourescent's in it over the deep end and a single compact flourescent that's as bright as the sun (don't look at it as it WILL blind you!!!!)

I can work in there, but I get cramped soon.

This is my space-saving fold down workbench. I use a 2x4 to brace it, which I need to set up as a swing away unit

Future plans include:
  • Finishing off any exposed studs with drywall,
  • Painting the whole place a gloss white (to provide more reflective light),
  • Sealing the floor (after a thorough cleaning)
  • Adding more lights (directional - tracklights or spot halogens)
  • Addiing more power (though I would have to upgrade my panel for that)

It's my escape room as my basement space keeps getting taken over by my wife's Pampered Chef products.

Nice little garage. It may be a little messy, but what garage isn't? I like garages that you can see signs that work is actually done in there. Great idea for that workbench also!

It's kind of cramped, but I like it. I've been without a garage for about 15 years so I'd be stoked to have that space. My current work area is about 6'x10' and I share that with a washer, dryer, water heater, and the furnace for the house. I even squeezed a shelf unit in there that has a 2'x6' footprint. It doesn't leave a lot of room for me, so I know what ya mean about being cramped.
I like the fold up work bench idea. Might I suggest mounting a 2x4 board horizontally on the wall just below the work bench so that when the bench is down the weight rest on the 2x4 not the hinges. You could also use a couple of more hinges to attach a couple of 4x4 legs to the corners of the bench. When you lower the top the 4x4's would swing into position giving you a work area that's tough enough to do some hammering on. Just a thought.

In the pic of the folding workbench in the "down" position, there's a 2x4 visible. I use it to brace the bench so the weight is not on the bench or the support cable (on the left hand side). I plan to hinge a couple of legs on either end to provide better support and so that they come down when I fold the bench down.

I love having it. It's proved itself invaluable.

I am trying to clean it all out. I plan on putting the bug frame on rotisserie and putting the rest of the stuff in the shed out back. The drywall and wood will be used on the walls and shelves to get everything set up.

At least your working on a vw! Check out my garage. You'll like my sign. What is that deck lid on the wall?

Looks like a "W" lid to me...
What's the link to your garage photos, matt?

It is in fact a W-Decklid. You guys have some good eyes to see that through my crappy photos. However, I am not sure what year it's from.

I was digging out old VW parts from a site I found in Southern MD and this was buried in the leaves behind an old oval...I wanted to save the oval but it was too far gone. The whole thing started to disintegrate when we tried to move it.

Here's what the find looked like:

There are probably a few indicators on the lid to help narrow down it's vintage. Did it still have the spring attached?

Pity about the car being so far gone - that's too often the case these days. I'd love to see those photos, but the link doesn't seem to work for me.

Thanks for the support. Though I don't necessarily need something bigger, there's a lot inside of me that wants one. I do my best to keep my space nice and well kept.
