my micro "shop"

so I finally stepped up in the world and got a house!!! So I'm finally out of the apartment where everybody reports me for working on cars, making noise, ect.
So...... its tiny and I did a little work to it. So here it is.

What size is the shop in the pictures? What kind of work do you plan on doing?

My first place had a 'shop' that size. Mine looked like yours and was actually an outdoor storage closet. I spent many hours in there cutting and welding to build bumper and tool box for my Jeep.

its just an outdoor storage closet, Its really just to hold my tool boxes. but Its mine!!!!!!!!!!! I'm gonna be building some shelves to make the most out of the 5 x 3 room.

moved some of my stuff in today. There is just enough room to open a drawer with me standing in front of it. Anyone have any ideas about how I can make the most out of this space????????

Yes, never, ever become a hoarder! Keep you tool collection to a minimum. Lots of shelves over the boxes and lights under them so you boxes are not "in a cave" when you look for something in them.
You have limited space, keep it in check.

You could also put shallow shelves on the left side, if you are willing to stand beside your drawer instead of in front.

Great work so far! Way to be inspired by, and not discouraged by, your limitations.

Do you see your micro-shop as a long-term or a short-term solution?

If you see yourself using it for while consider selling your current tool chests and buying a single roll cab that's wide, but not too deep. You could probably fit everything from your current boxes into a roll cab. You'd gain a small work surface and could put a tool board on the wall behind it. You could also hang a shelf above it lower than you could with your current boxes since you wouldn't have to deal with the lids on the top boxes.

Put shelves up high over your toolboxes. Make them on both long sides so you maximize storage, with the side opposite the boxes up high enough you do not bump your head. Use the cheap L-shaped brackets that are formed out of sheetmetal, strong and no diagonal piece. Mounted to the studs of course. Not sure on overall height, you might get by with two shelves over the boxes and one on opposite side. Maybe a U-shape top shelf all the way around, and then extra lower shelf right above the boxes?

You could rip a 4x8 sheet of 3/4 plywood into 16-inch widths, and get all of your shelves out of one sheet.

A nice little folding/collapsable bench mounted to the back wall (just make sure you have clearance for drawers) would be a good addition I think. That and a stool, and you could get some good work done in there.

thanks for all the advice fella's!!!!!!!!!! Budget is tight, ending an apartment lease early is a B!@%#!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But I'll be putting these ideas to use very soon.

Just a comment, on ending the apt lease. They can only charge you for missed rent until it is rented out. So as example, if you had 6 months left on lease when you moved out, and they took 1 month to clean and re-lease your unit, you are only responsible for that 1 month and not the remaining 5 months. In other words they can't double dip with you and the new tenants paying for the same unit.

Don't worry about that size. My automotive shed is 4'x8'.

Can you re-frame an opening on the long wall of the shed? I jst did that with my 4x8. It had a 3' door in the 4' end wall that I closed up. Opened up a 6' opening on the 8' wall. Much better access.

And you could actually advertise for someone to take that apartment. Not as a sublet, but just so there is no gap that you would have to pay for.

its a house, its a storage room, and its mainly to hold all my tools from getting stolen. it has permanent electricity, that light bulb will stay up there till it blows, and i plan on putting a shed up in the future. The driveway is on the front of the house, and this storage room is in the back, But I'm gonna use my parents old yard wagon to put tools on, so I won't have to make 1000 trips back and forth from the driveway to the storage room. I'll work on small stuff in there, but its better than the apt, I had a storage room there, but I was frowned upon when I started wrenching. It'll be next week before I can do anything else to it, but I'll keep ya'll posted.
