Just caught up on everything.

That record storage looks sweet, simple but effective. I think that's going to look great with all the records on there. Add a pop of color and some history to the wall. The whitewashed brick is a great backdrop for that too.

That exhaust mod is awesome. Smart thinking and it really makes the car sound more aggressive. Very cool unique mod that you can say you did on your own, which is always pretty fun. I bet that makes it a lot more fun to drive, if a little more difficult to keep off of the hoon pedal.

Thanks Tom - the mod certainly came out nice, just with the "loud" was a little louder, but, oh well!

No house, garage or car related updates....the wife and I just got back from our honeymoon. I can honestly say I think this is close to one of the longest vacations/time off work I've ever had.

We went to Steamboat Springs, CO; got a little ski in/ski out (more ski in than out lol), right on the mountain, super convenient to the base area and the cool spot for après after a long day!

Here is the view from our balcony

The misses and I somewhere on the mtn, was a great second day, blue skies for most of it...
52681733202_57f7160861_b.jpgSteamboat’23 by fouckhest, on Flickr

On our last full day there we booked the shuttle up to the hot springs, would HIGHLY recommend doing this if you are ever in steamboat, such a great experience, we had the first (9am) shuttle, had the place to ourselves for ~30min of the 1.5hr time there.

There is a natural hot spring (~150° water) that feeds down into 3 different hot springs that they control the temperature, hot/med/mild....This was a great way to recover from 2 days skiing for sure!

NICE! I've never done the hot springs but I will now based on your report! The 'boat has huge snow this year. Christmas Tree was one of the first legitimate double blacks I skied out west. I was just in Summit county (4 days: Breck, Keystone, Copper & Vail) last week.

Thats awesome you were out there, conditions are insane this year, one of those years that makes me wish I could spend more time out there...I need to capitalize on this work from home job better lol!

Hot springs are definitely a must do!

Had some folks over this weekend for a little chili cookoff, my buddies shop used to host it for the local PCA group, but didn't this year, so we hosted our friends that would have normally attended as the non-PCA members, "riff raff" as we call ourselves

Gave me a good excuse to clean up the garage and move around my welding table and saws....might have to make this a quarterly thing to make sure the shop stays clean

Been a busy few weeks of more work travel....latest project has been refinishing the BBS e88 for the Cayman. When I bought the wheels, when I bought the car, it was too good of a deal to pass up, but always disliked the black centers....Finally took the time to have the centers powder coated and OEM'ish silver, then added the center caps and rings....

Those wheels look amazing!!!

They are so pricey now (if you can find them in stock); not that they were ever cheap.
Agreed, those look killer

Thanks guys, it certainly makes me feel like the car is finally "mine"

@Trapps I certainly bought them at the right time, I think being 986/987 spec helped a lot, but I've definitely seen 911 spec sets sell for way more than I could ever palet!!

Some weekends don't work out exactly like you planned....but anytime you end up with an impromptu garage thrash session its a good use of time/space...

Long story short, Saturday, I was working on hanging the TV in the garage, over complicating it as usual, lol.....got a call that a buddies car wouldnt go into gear while running and he was and the drive was far too far to risk slamming gears....so favors called in, another buddy was dispatched with truck & trailer, hauled his mk2 gti to my house and we set forth on getting ready to get the gearbox out...got the car prepped Saturday afternoon, started back on it about 10am yesterday....took a little longer than expected to get the gear box out, but once we did it was relatively straight forward....found that the plate that engages the clutch had failed...its a curious setup, but apparently a known issue with certain older vw clutch setups

Quick recap....TV hung

All back together and tucked in....just one plastic shift clip and it should drive out....quite happy with the ability to get 4 cars in the garage and still be able to have a little bit of work space

The project that got derailed by the clutch swap was starting my speaker box for my gti...got this far...lol but it did give me an excuse to buy a new jig saw, works pretty well thus far!

1 guy working, 2 guys drinking beer....perfect.

Actually 3 guys drinking beer lol, I was taking the photo whilst drinking....but to the defense of myself and my buddy in the hoodie looking at the car...we did most of the work...the guy in front of the tool cart has a pair of jacked up knees and is a few years our elder, so we were helping out

Those wheels are perfect! Such a big improvement from before. My biggest fear with having an old VAG product up top is, they like to leave their mark. I am only speaking from experience here. :ROFLMAO:
LOL...that car is far from without faults, but 3 days now and no drops...hoping it is gone before this weekend! Thanks on the wheels, I am super stoked

Those E88s look great on there. Have any more pics and fitment (size/ET) details?

Unfortunately no more photos right now, haven't had time, hopefully soon....they are a very track friendly offset, I put a 15mm (i think) spacer on the back, but it rubbed up in the mtns, so off they came....probably going to a 265 in the rear vs 275 now, so that might allow the spacers to work with a minor fender roll

Here are the specs:
18" x 9" 50mm offset,
18" x 10" 38mm offset

Thanks @rzims, appreciate the kind words!

Its been a fun process and the space has served more for what I didn't plan on (entertaining) that actual work....but hoping to change that soon!

Weekend update....things were relatively productive....

Finally got this cool old light hung up for the wife in the office/basement/man cave lol

Then onto garage/car project! Put the new jig saw and old skill saw (w/new blade) and guide to good use to start on the speaker box....

This allowed me to work on the layout for the hatch area and make some templates for the side panels...pretty set that these are going to evolve as the box comes together....this was all on Saturday, then took the wifey out for a little promotion celebration

52777275379_1863997507_c.jpgUntitled by fouckhest, on Flickr

Sunday morning I set out to lowes depot to get a sheet of 3/4 MDF rough cut into more manageable sizes....then got to looking for something thinner to make the side panels, one of the guys working in the lumber area was interested in my project, found a small piece of 1/4 ply that was delaminating, called it scrap and donated it to the cause! lol

One of the size panels mocked up.....should be interesting to see it start to come together!

Busy weekend! Congrats to your wife on the promotion!

It sounds like you guys like using your new space for entertainment. Planning on more furniture or a bar?

Thanks for sure...she is still on the fence about it, but its a good career move for now....

Not sure what the space will become, likely not more furniture b/c originally this was supposed to be where we quarantine the dogs when we want to escape them....however, that hasn't really been the case....Ideally, I need to get the french drain done in the front of the house so I can put flooring down here, then it would be come more lounge than anything. I would like to maintain the ability to pull a car in here if the need were to arise....mainly hail storm or going out of town for an extended time.

Had a relatively productive weekend, got the PDK service done on my Cayman, now it should be ready for my trip up to ToD next week, super excited for that!

Started to notice carpenter bees last week, so ordered up some cheapo mason jars and whipped these guys up Saturday morning....already have a couple residents
52789714497_d12cbfa2e6_c.jpg by fouckhest, on Flickr

Beside some house chores spent most of my free time working on the speaker box for the silver GTi. This has been a fun project and have picked up quite a few fun tips/tricks along the way thanks to the interwebz, lol! In all honesty, I have picked up a couple cool tricks on building boxes like this....

Here is the box mostly assembled, got the top laid out....next step will be to figure out how to use this cool little circle template for the router and start cutting the holes...

Basic idea of how it will look....there will be covers that go from edge to edge

More details on the mason jars for the carpenter bees please! Mine are awake from their winter slumber.
Sure!

I looked at a few different DIYs, this one seemed pretty simple....

its pretty straight forward, one big hole (I used a 7/8" paddle bit) up the center of a chunk of 4x4, then 3x 1/2 holes going in/up at a 45° angle to intersect the big hole...I started with a 7" block

I snagged this 4pk of cheap mason jars from amazon, cut a hole in the top using a hole saw and screwed the lid to the base and screwed a hook to the top and one into where I was hanging them...

This is the one I hung in the roof by my shed....no tenants yet, but the bees loved this area last summer...hoping this gets some action!

Thanks! We've been living with these a-holes for 19 years now. Never knew I had options. Just knew I didn't want to even entertain a price from an exterminator/bug guy, given how many of them there are on my place.

It can be entertaining to take a tennis racket out to them every now and again though.

Found some time to get out to the garage last night....first off new tool review....

Jasper Circle Guide for Routers, this thing ROCKS! Highly recommend....did a couple practice cuts to get the feel for it and to ensure the correct diameter for the sub....have to admit, its cool and nice to be able to cut a 9-1/16" diameter hole!

Practice

Holes cut in the actual mounting surface/top for the box...

Used one of the practice pieces to practice again with a roundover bit on the router, definitely gives it a nice finished look around the sub
52793056443_f2a82dcc27_c.jpgUntitled by fouckhest, on Flickr

Then had a little extra time so started working on side panels....still debating if I make these out of 1/2" or stick with 3/4.....final product will fit under that side panel flange

In this weeks installment of how can I over-complicate a project....Lets build the wife a raised garden bed!

The misses wants to plant a small garden, mostly herbs and such, between living in an old neighborhood with lots of big trees, layout of my lot and a gaggle of hounds, the backyard didn't really lend itself to a great place for a bed that got both good sunlight and was easy to keep said hounds out....

So we have my latest project. Looking at "off the shelf" solutions, it was either plastic, which I am not a fan of for longevity or if it was a prebuilt wood kit, the size to cost didn't really impress me, especially given the price point

I decided to start with a 2x2x8 galvanized water trough
52796981352_74703fda3e_c.jpgRaised bed by fouckhest, on Flickr

Guess I forgot to snap a photo of all the lumber in the back of the truck....but doing with a 2x6 surround, 2x4 inside those to act as supports, then 4x4 legs.

Racecar water trough lol
52797994848_df5d586814_c.jpgRaised bed by fouckhest, on Flickr

Noodled on how to build it, but landed on starting with the ends to get the legs parallel here to start, then added the sides...
52797792684_7439f2ef2e_c.jpgRaised bed by fouckhest, on Flickr

Finished product, I will drill a series of small'ish holes (~1/2" and maybe some 1-1/2", depending on what hole saws i have laying around), in the bottom to allow for good drainage. The bottom will be filled with scrap wood from whatever has been falling out of the trees, probably start with some bigger "firewood" size, then twigs/sticks, then garden/potting soil on top of that. Hopefully we will get some goods out of all this effort, lol

Enjoyed a nice long weekend, unfortunately Friday/Saturday were a little nasty (cold & rainy) here, but worked well for shop time for me....

Knowing it was going to be rainy Friday/Saturday, I took a half day and knocked out a quick project on the truck....gutted the old carpet and did a spray on bedliner in the floor boards....when I get back from my trip, its going to get a good exterior detail and some maintenance...

It was comical how fast I was able to get the seats and carpet out....all cleaned up

Two cans later all done....an not suprising, I forgot to take a photo with the seats back in...

Friday and Saturday most of both days were spent in the garage working on my speaker box project, lots and lots of measuring, cutting, sanding, etc....but all in all I have to admit, I am happy with how its coming together
52806690106_152dc60c36_c.jpg by fouckhest, on Flickr

snuck another new tool into this project scope, figured a pneumatic stapler would be a nice thing to have

Yesterday the weather was rather pleasant, so finished up the garden planter for the misses, got it all sorted, drain holes drilled stick base gathered and filled with expensive dirt lol

Drainage

Found a good spot for it beside the house, out of the way.....debating whether I spray it down with some works or muriatic acid to give it a bit of a weathered look....also, dont mind the grass in the driveway, it got sprayed yesterday

Since this is "garage journal," end of the day, post clean up relaxation in the driveway with a cold beverage....great way to end a productive weekend.

Enjoyed a few days separated from the digital world last week. Spent Wed - Sunday up on the NC/TN border having some fun at Tail of the Dragon. Those who cross over from vwvortex likely know of the "Wookies in the Woods" event, which was started buy some mk4 r32 enthusiasts many years ago....can never go wrong with driving ~1k miles in 3-4 days all on tight, twisty, two lane blacktop!

Always have to support the local businesses....so here are some photos from killboy

52832407245_ec907cf99d_c.jpg3979620 by fouckhest, on Flickr

....one of me trying to keep up with a buddy I met a few years ago, he is a local, NC miata with a little aero, lot of tire....VERY FAST on this road!
52832186639_7ff6abe065_c.jpg3979619 by fouckhest, on Flickr

Then back to reality, got caught up with work....was looking for something to do last night....been wanting a pole saw attachment for my stihl kombi unit for a while, we have a few trees that needed some attention, so off to the local dealer I went and put my new tool to work!

52831492497_ed501304ee_c.jpgUntitled by fouckhest, on Flickr

I will say, that little saw didnt hesitate at all on some ~5" diameter limbs! I didn't take any before photos of the trees I trimmed, but here is the resulting pile of limbs, probably ~6-7ft tall...should make for a good bon fire!

Awesome thread! What do you use to keep the BBS shiny? Mine on my Volvo are time intensive and a lot of work just to keep looking decent. Ceramics and others don't really last after a polish (Wenol)

Thanks!

Thanks!

The centers of the wheels are powder coated/cleared, with ceramic coating on them....The lips are raw, I recently re-polished them with a Zephyr polish kit, then coated them with this:

This was my first real outing with them, I am curious to see how they hold up after some more driving....I have used that same coating on another car with polished wheels, it has held up pretty well, but I do not like cleaning cars/wheels, etc, so I dont pay them much attention lol

Ok cool - just bought some, hear Chem guys make good stuff. Like one outing and any bit of rain the pitting sets in...then its like full polish time again.

oh no, that certainly doesnt happen i did the same polishing process and coating on my other car ~2yrs ago and they have held up rather well...they need a good cleaning, but no pitting

love the wagon, especially on RSs! I have a soft spot for that wheel...I have a custom built set of 19" super RSs for my widebody car....
