Made some good progress on painting this weekend, would have never expected that I would be as exhausted and sore as I am! LOL, guess I'm getting old....anyway, very happy with the progress, looking forward to getting it wrapped up. hopefully chip away at it a little this week, then knock out that eve on the front next weekend...

It's been a little while since my last update, not much for ground breaking progress, but few things have been looming that will hopefully result in some big progress very soon....

Had a busy July with travel, managed to get a little paint work done here/there, mainly finishing off the peak of the front of the garage (sketchy up on the ladder)...Then I found my self in a situation where I found a Porsche Cayman R that checked all the boxes for a big boy play car, so spent about a month trying to sell my Turbocharged R32 and/or part it out, well, as Murphy would have it, I arranged a call with the owner for a Sunday to discuss price, deposit and when to pickup, and there had been an offer made on the preceding Friday (car was on consignment at a dealer)....all that being said, the universe told me it wasn't the right time, but since I had justified selling the car, I decided to move forward with that in order to accelerate finishing the garage in hopes of making it usable for the winter so I can fire up one of my other projects that have been sitting for a couple years.

All that being said, made some progress this past weekend buttoning up electrical so I can get drywall done, then move onto flooring, lift install, driveway put back to usable, etc...

Installed a my flood now that the peak is painted...next project will be to build out the Hot/Cold water spigots beside the outdoor electrical outlet.

Had another small project in early August, my fiancé wanted a porch swing for her b-day, so found some plans and a buddy with a little wood shop donated a Friday vacation day and we knocked this out....then over a week or so, I put a couple coats of paint on it, then last Saturday I finished it up and got it hung up (unfortunately forgot to take photos of the brackets used for the top supports)

No/Not yet...

Sold the LM's, Sold the RSI wheels, the turbo kit is sold, built engine sale pending, currently have a few folks interested in the rolling shell (basically a complete car sans seats/engine/trans)

Going to get the engine removed soon and get the turbo kit boxed/organized and then get the shell into a place where I can actively advertise it

....if it doesnt sell, I have a stock R32 engine I may put in the car and see if I can sell it as a full car.

Thanks Dave, luckily she is very reasonable and likes my house more than I do haha! Plus, in this market it doesn’t make sense, and she has a house that needs sold too….I’m hopeful after a couple years we will start looking for land

Got a "little" bit of work done this weekend, honestly, just yesterday...but it was nice to see some progress. Started my outdoor spigot install, bought the cover plate at lowes, fabricated the aluminum box (got to use my Harbor Freight/Swag Offroad press brake finally!!), its mainly mocked up for now, hoping to get some more work done this week or next weekend. Once this is finished up (running lines included) I can do my insulation and get ready for drywall.

Forgot to post this last week, this was another little project...

Installed a switched outlet under my walkout/shed area last weekend so I could install some lights, its a super handy concept with one outlet being switched and the other being constant power if you need to run an extension cord or something

Need to do a dump run and clean up some of the mess out here next

Got to about 95% finished with my water spigot project yesterday, got the spigots themselves mounted, lines run through the rafters and into the house, now will just need to tie into existing water lines for the second bathroom (which will be getting remodeled soon, so may wait on that project)

With the misses out of town for the weekend I got some pretty decent work done. Built the structure that I will use to attach the metal roofing as a wainscot, or most of it, still need to do the lower portion. Then came the big job....16 rolls of R-15 later, my garage walls are fully insulated and essentially ready for drywall, hopefully the contractor that quoted me a few weeks ago will be available sooner than later.

Wainscot structure, basically this is to build out to the same level as the concrete block, once it is complete there will be a small shelf on top.

Change of plans for this past weekend, was supposed to be up at Tail of the Dragon with some friends, unfortunately, Wednesday on my way up, I had an unfortunate incident with my car that resulted in a busted oil pan that left me stranded on the side of the road (admittedly, rookie lowered car driver move, but its a first in my 20yrs + of driving modified/lowered cars....so, oh well)

Took that as a sign that I wasn't supposed to spend the weekend in the mountains, a buddy of mine was off work and was able to come rescue me, got the car home and decided to best utilize the time off from work and get some projects around the garage finished up. Tackled my attic space project along with finalizing my shed project, inclusive of moving my air compressor out under the shed.

Onto the photos...

First project was the attic space, spent Wednesday afternoon knocking out the support stringers and estimating the correct width for the plywood, tested it on a 1/2" sheet I had laying around 66" wide was the magic number to allow me to get it up into the space....so off to Lowes I went Thursday morning and had them cut up 8 sheets of 5/8" plywood.

Started by reinforcing the trusses, then onto the plywood, pretty happy with how it turned out.

Then onto the shed project, got a good deal on some 5/4 board that were leftovers from a buddy that's a builder, got one wall done Thursday afternoon, started on the big door after that....

Got the door finished up Friday, hung the door, and man, that barndoor hardware is expensive, but nice and worth it...

Saturday I worked on getting my air compressor moved outside and up onto the concrete slab, then anchored a treated 2x4 to the house and set the 4x4 post for the small wall on that end, started on my small door, but ran out of time before I had to clean up to meet the lady for a gathering with some friends.

Guess I didn't take any photos of the small wall when it was done....But here is one after I finished up the small door Sunday. It is ~47-3/8" wide, I wanted a total width of 48" to ensure getting things in/out would be easy. My supervisor always keeping an eye on me

Next will be to start organizing in there and get the compressor all wired/plumbed.

Well a day I've been waiting on for quite some time has finally come...Drywall!

Was delightfully surprised to come home at lunch to see the guys had already hung the entire garage and the crew to mud should be there shortly!

For anyone wondering, to stay consistent with code, the ceiling and the front (existing structure) wall is 5/8" fireboard, the side and garage doors are 1/2"....also, made sure to put an attic door in to access my newfound storage.

Came home last night to find the guys had come to tape and get the first coat of mud down. Let it air out until about dark, then put my big dehumidifier our there and closed everything up last night, then opened it up again this morning, supposed to be in the 80s here, so hoping it dries so they can sand and get another coat on today.

I do have a question for the GJ public, what are everyone's thoughts on paint? Seems to be a very slippery slope from $10/gal to $50/gal...any feedback/advise is much appreciated.

The one thing I did think about hanging up were my hotwheels displays on the window wall....I do have my magazine feature displays, but those are in my office until the misses tells me they have to go, lol....otherwise, I tend to like "simply"

$10/gal was a swag, but you can get 5gal buckets of cheap paint from lowes depot for ~$76, so ~$15/gal


Doing a little research and calculating, I could buy 5gal of Kilz interor primer sealer to do the entire garage, a second coat of that on the ceiling, then 2gal of SW duration paint to do the walls (thinking for cleaning purposes), would keep my paint costs under $200

I'd agree with Killz as a primer. Then a mid grade paint; mostly for ease of application. Better quality paints seem to go on easier and cover better IMHO.

Knowing that you are a VAG guy, I'd suggest doing a light gray (maybe even Agreeable Gray) with the blue of the lift. That would be simple, and still fit with the VAG theme.

Thanks for stopping in, GTi's are great cars, I've used them as a daily at different points in my time, not a VW CC sedan does the duty!

Appreciate the kind words on the shed, I needed to make sure there was sufficient airflow for the A/C unit out there.

Going to have to put some serious thought into doing gray walls....time to do some photo searching

I painted my shop walls bright shiny white gloss - easy to clean up and reflects light well. Then add a stripe if you want for character - but - it's a shop, not a showroom. I think it's more important to just get it built and functional.......looking great BTW. I have complete shop envy......................still!

I may need to do some samples on that upper wall and see if a light gray or white is the way to go, I was so convinced white was the ticket iI hadn't thought of anything else.

Use a PVA primer on new drywall. That will help considerably on top coat uniformity.

Made a little progress this weekend, Saturday I got the ceiling marked out and all the holes drilled for hanging lights, was a rather tedious process with more trips up/down the ladder than I can remember.

Sunday I set out to spray some primer, had thought I was going to do this with the little Wagner 3500 that the misses and I bought, but it was going to take too long, so off to Home Depot I went to rent a real sprayer....It worked great, but it definitely puts some material down, blew through 5gal in about 1/3 of the garage, so ended up back at HD to get another 10gal of primer, glad I got the third 5gal bucket, I maybe have 2gal left

Sprayer certainly makes a mess, I need to do some cleanup this week, if you look closely you an see all the hooks for the light fixtures. Hoping to get some painting done this weekend if time permits.

Went down to check out the primer after work last night, I was more than excited to say the least, this stuff dried really nice!

Actually thinking about leaving the ceiling in primer, any thoughts? I am going to have 3 rows of 6x 4ft LED lights, so thinking a flat ceiling might be beneficial

Once the lights are up, you'll likely never see the ceiling. You'll be blinded by the light if they're on or unable to see them in the dark. Leave it in primer and save the time/money for another component.
