I grew up in North Carolina, but don't live at the beach. But I figured I could build an Outer Banks style boathouse and have it serve as my shop here in my backyard on the banks of the James River ("Big Jim") in Richmond. The design was something I sketched up, but in the old boatbuilder tradition, built by the "rack of the eye", that is, no plans. The cladding is some of the last big cypress to come out of the Great Dismal Swamp. It is my "dirty shop", the "clean shop" being the small garage under the house. It is all humbly proud. Not like some of the massive places I see here that you other guys have, but it serves the purpose and is long on charm. Once I built it, I realized there was no place for the wooden boat I have (18' Simmons Sea Skiff' www.simmonsseaskiff.com). A man can never have enough garage space. But the proportions are correct here. If you ever travel to the N.C. Maritime Museum in Beaufort, NC, their reproduction of an outboard motor repair shop is almost identical to the interior of my place. Hope you like it.
