My new 26x30

A little about myself: I’m 25 years old, married, and working full time as a graphic designer. My wife and I bought our first house together almost 4 years ago... But ever since we moved in, I had plans to build a new garage. The garage that is already there is a small one car, with no power (I never ran power to it because I knew it would be temporary).

Well late last year I started lining up everything to get the project underway, and after a long wait from my concrete guy, I was finally able to start the project about 3 months ago.

The garage is 26ft deep and 30ft wide, with 9ft walls and a 16x8 door. A few friends and myself have been doing all of the work (except the concrete) in the evenings and weekends. So it’s dragging on a little longer than I hoped... But I am very happy with the progress and I can’t wait to start moving into it.

As of today, things left to be done before I can call this project complete:
- Hang garage door
- Floor epoxy
- Soffits and facia
- Siding
- Electrical
- Gravel driveway
- Insulate and sheet inside
- Remove old garage

This garage will be a home away from home for me, somewhere to escape and hang out with friends... I have a 78 dodge van as a project, that I can’t wait to start working on... I’ve also had a few motorcycle, but they had to go to allow for the new garage... I’m now getting into dirt bikes and have a klx110 mini bike that I have been making more adult friendly, but hope to get a full size bike next year.

Simple sturdy and a very clean looking structure, I love how things can be acomplished even when on a budget and you do them yourself. Very nice...

Fellow graphic designer here:beer: Looks like its coming along nicely. for doing most of the work yourself. You should consider keeping the small garage to store lawn/garden equipment, kids toys, ect. That stuff tends to clutter up your man cave quickly. Keep the progress pics coming.

I wouldn't mind keeping the small garage for just that, but my wife wants it gone, and turned into yard... that was part of the deal when talking her into this one... But I will probably build a small shed in it place later to help keep the garage clutter free

Very nice will you be able to save the trees? What kind of drive way?

Yea the trees will stay, I was thinking about cutting the one down, and run a two car wide drive all the way back... But decided to keep them for the shade... So now it will be a one car wide gravel driveway that goes between them, then widens out right before the garage... So I will be able to park two cars side-by-side in front of the door

That will make a nice garage. I wish I could have done that size but cost was a limiting factor. The design is very similar to my first 16x16 shop.

Do you plan of putting air conditioning in there. I ask because the windows look too small to fit a window unit. Just something to keep in mind as you build.

How are you planing on getting electrical in there?

I'm not sure about the heat/AC yet... For now I'm going to get some big wall mount fans, and a torpedo heater... But was thinking about finding an old furnace and ac unit later on down the road... As for the electrical, we are going to run it underground from the house to its own sub panel in the garage.

well, work on the garage has been a little slow, other projects keep getting in the way...

but here's a little update: i couldn't squeeze the epoxy floor out of the budget right now, so i started moving in... i will try to do something with the floor later

but we did get most of the electrical done this past week... we still need to wire up the outlet for the garage door opener, two ceiling fans, and some flush mount speakers in the ceiling... but all my other outlets have power and the lights are on

all i have left is to finish the sofit/fascia, siding, and have the driveway put in... so if everything goes accordingly, it will be done before snow fall

after all that, i will be building shelves and organizing the inside.

yea, they're metal... they are Geneva kitchen cabinets from the 50's or 60's... I picked them up off craigslist, and plan to repaint them eventually... I also have all the upper cabinets sitting behind the van in the pictures

well here's a little bit of an update...

all of my stuff is moved into the new garage and in its temporary place, at least until I can insulate, sheet, and hang shelves.

also my old garage is gone... some local guys came buy and jacked it up, lowered it on a car hauler, and towed it away... pretty sweet deal, because it saved me the hassle and cash of renting a dumpster and dealing with the asbestos siding.

and last but not least, I finally have a driveway... it's made of asphalt road shavings... it isn't anything fancy but it's way better than the muddy ally we have been driving down for the past 4 years... next year I will do some kind of edging to clean it up a bit
