I'll start of by saying I'm new to the forum; and I've seen some great buildings and interiors thus far. Currently I'm at a crossroads on what the best way would be to finish off my interior walls. Whether I should use all 1/2 plywood or mix it up by using some metal siding along with the plywood. All suggestions are appreciated.

I'll upload some pictures of my building to give you an idea of what I'm working with..

Nice building. Any shots of the outside? All metal is the way to go with 2" spray foam insulation in the walls if you can affford it.

Hemiram, do you know what an estimated cost should be for the spray foam?

I want to say it was 12-14k just to do the walls of my shop 60x104 and 16' high. That was 5 years ago and the prices have come down since then. i want to say it was like $2.50-$3 a sq ft. That was for 2" thick. It ends up being a bit thicker its amazing how much stronger it make the building.

JFan3....first off, Welcome to Garage Journal, secondly, you **** and I'm jealous  Thirdly....You **** on Garage Journal is a GOOD thing. Fourth....Fantastic looking building, and I'm jealous. Fifth....I jealous.

Now with that out of the road.....If it were mine, and this is only MY opinion, I would go with corrugated tin partway up as a wainscoting, then go with drywall above. But when it comes to finishing off the interior of a building, you get as many different opinions as women have shoes. You have drywall, OSB, drywall AND OSB, all OSB, all Drywall, plywood, plywood and tin, all tin, and any other multitude of combinations.

I would though, and others will probably agree.....leave the post exposed. Even if they are laminated post, cover them with some other wood to make them look like one solid post, and do all of the finishing in between. The interior choice you choose is all dependent on what you do in there, and what you like. It's a personal choice, just like commando, boxers, or briefs. :spit: No one way is going to be better than the other except for what your intentions are. If you are the type that really gets pissed, and flies off the handle and throws large wrenches, then I would recommend a really thick OSB.

But the place looks fantastic. Make it for what YOU want. The only thing I can recommend is go to the Gallery and look at interiors of others garages and pole buildings, OR.......go to www.houzz.com and type in a search for say "Pole barn interiors". But I have to warn you....once on Houzz, you'll be spending quite a bit of time on there also, and DO NOT, and I repeat, DO NOT let the wife be looking over your shoulder, or you'll be into so much work you'll never get done as they have a shitload of ideas for everything.

Once you get the interior that you decide, your next question will be....what color should I paint it, or what color of stripe to put in it, how high should I put the stripe. Again.....go to the GJ Gallery and look through the pics as everyone has a different idea that suits their own taste but will tell you that what they have is the latest and greatest. Again....it up to you and your taste, and we can only tell you what's best, as you clearly don't have a clue or you wouldn't be asking. :lol_hitti:lol_hitti

Seriously though....it looks fantastic, and I hope you hang around and become a long term member. You won't find a better group of people on any other websites.

And be sure to post up your progress pics and ideas. We all love to join in on the ideas, and really love pics. And the more pics the better as it will save the next one that comes along and ask.......what should I do.

BTW....what part of Ohio are you from? The reason I ask is that there are a lot of members from Ohio, and a group of us all like to hook up and get together at swap meets or car shows, and you're more than welcome to join. And there is a very large amount of members from northern Ohio. So many in fact that I think they are tipping the world a little bit so us ones down towards the middle and southern part of Ohio have to suffer their cold weather.:D And you no doubt have members very close to you.

I like your garage too. I built an upper floor in mine to store stuff. But I still haven't gotten around to making handrails for the stairs. I think I might copy yours, very nice.

Mansfield huh, depending on what side, you might be fairly close.

I probably wouldn't go with spray foam as you already appear to have insulation up under the metal. I'd put some rigid foam up between the girts and some some interior wall covering over that. Check out CL for Insulation King.

BTW, you might understand this, my FIL retired after many years working for J&F Construction. ;)

Can you get me some more pictures on the loft and how you have it set up? How tall are the garage doors? That's a 16' sidewall right? Are they standard or scissor trusses?

What is the roof pitch?

Johndoe,

It's a 6/12 roof pitch with scissor trusses inside angle on the truss is 4/12. My front doors are 12' x 12', yes your correct it is 16' side walls. My upstairs has limited head room, at the peak of the scissor truss I have 7'4" (roughly) of head room. I'm using my loft strictly for cold storage or attic space . I'll get some pictures of my loft for you to take a look at.

I have about 13'8" of head room from my floor the bottom of the loft floor joist. I wanted the extra had room downstairs for pulling in a backhoe and larger farm tractors for maintenance purposes.

Update since my last post in April, 2015 I've made some additional improvements to my newly built building. This past summer I was able to get the concrete on my side porch poured and also the driveway up to my building is now complete with concrete. One other addition i added was another bay (16'x36'), it's amazing how quickly you realize you're going to need more room for storage, work space, etc..... It's been a long process to get this project finished, but I'm glad to say it's finally finished.

IS that a wood fireplace?

I here some people saying they can't insure it if they heat their Shops with Wood/pellets.

Did you have any issues?

It is a wood burner and I had it installed by a professional with triple insulated stainless pipe. BUT on the other hand, i did have trouble getting it insured. My insurance company said there was no way they could be certain that i wouldn't stack straw around my wood stove and light a fire..... My response was common sense goes a long way, you know :lol_hitti.... Anyways I had the installers write a letter confirming everything was professionally installed, hoping it would make a difference. But they didn't care, basically said sorry there's nothing we can do. So i moved on looking for another carrier, i ended moving my house, autos & boat, land and building to a new carrier that said sure we can insure it and they even put a replacement value on it in case it ever needed rebuilt ....

Long story short .... it was a pain in the rear to get it insured .... but after going through the process it's finished and covered.

HAHA

That's what I thought, thanks.

I hate what it is going to cost to run a sealed burner propane system.
but not sure I want to switch, Phone call will be in my future.

So I’m in the process of buying a new place with acreage, it also has a detached Pole barn.

So after posting on your thread I thought to myself (self you should call State Farm and see what they say) So I called state farm and since I can’t speak directly with underwriting I have to explain it to my agent. Now I have planned to run a propane shop heater or old house furnace but wanted to just see if I can do a wood furnace/fireplace. SO I ask my agent to ask.

She calls me back and sys the only thing they will insure is electric heat, WTF!!!
I said why she said open flame

I said what about sealed combustion she said sealed what?
So I told her to call back and not to worry about a wood one and ask specifically about a Garage SHOP heater.

She call me back and says no, and that the ******* the other end this time did not even know what a furnace was.
I told her it would be easier to switch then to pay for the cost of electric heat. She said it would cost less to insure with someone else too, but she would call back and find someone that is not a *****.

So I ask OP and anyone else who do you insure with, and what do you have to say for them to understand??
