My new 36' x 56'

Hello everybody. I am a newb to this place and found it when googling for information to help me finish my new garage.

The pole building is up and garage doors installed. My next step will be to wire it up. Not exactly sure how I'll go about it yet. The plan will be to insulate and finish the interior at some point in time, but that's not in the budget right now. I want to keep that in mind so what I do now doesn't have to be re-done down the road.

Once spring gets here and the frozen tundra thaws, I will be running water and natural gas from the house, adding in a day lighted floor drain and finally a concrete floor. Maybe in floor heating? Not sure about that either. Maybe the budget will dictate how I go about this more than anything.

Parked all my **** in it for the first time yesterday. It's nice to clean out my driveway.

The gable end door is 12' wide x 14' tall. I wanted a 14' door so anything legal to roll down the highway will fit inside. My motor home is right at 12', so this works great. The side door is 12' x 12'.

The sidewalls are 14' inside. The ceiling has a raised chord truss so the gable end door will fit. I really wanted a 16' sidewall with (2) 14' doors on the gable end, but building codes in my county restrict the height. We dropped the roof pitch from a standard 4/12 to a 3/12 and use the raised chord truss inside to get the 14' door in and still stay within the height restriction we had to work with. Raised the price of the building a little, but I didn't have to fight the county on a variance.

Right now it will be a storage/maintenance building for my motor home, as well as space for my cars, trailer and lawn mower. I would like to make it into a shop someday, but I have 800' of finished and heated garage attached to the house that is plumbed with air, water and wired for my bridgeport and welders. I can pretty much do anything I need to in that garage, with the exception of my motor home, so finishing he new garage isn't really a 'need to have', just a 'nice to have' deal.

Can you give a ball park price of what this cost? This is something I would like to build (30X50) I built one out of wood and drywall at my old place but the cost was high. I like the pole built. I know concrete is pricey but it's nice you can add it later.

The price of the building alone is 35K. That includes the 2 OHDs and openers. Prices vary a lot depending on options.
I also have 10k in excavating to prep the site, but half of that is the 250' of driveway.
Concrete will be another 7-10k depending on how thick I go.

That's a good question. These gutters are larger than standard residential gutters, but time will tell.

It's been unusually mild for MN. The construction got held up a little over various things. We were hoping to be done in Nov before it got too cold and snowy. We got 4" 3 days before the start, so I had to plow. Oh well, everything should be frozen so we wouldn't tear things up too bad, right?

I managed to get out there a few days after they were done when the temp hit 40*. I don't have a bobcat, so I took my snowplow and dragged it backwards over all of the gravel as well as I could. It cleaned up pretty well, which is good since it's frozen hard now.

The building crew did a great job of minimizing the mess. The county said they wouldn't sign off on the final permit until next spring when grass is growing again, but when he came to do the framing inspection after the doors were installed he said it all looked so good he'd sign off on all of it. Surprised the heck out of me.

Days 2-4 were highs in the 30s. Light rain the last 2 days. It got pretty muddy, but the crew did a great job keeping the mess minimized.

Doesn't matter the size, it's never big enough. 2,000' is as much as the county allows, so it was a no brainer.

Floor will be going in next spring or summer. I need to run water and natural gas before I get to the floor though. Anyone know how to correctly T off of my current well system?

I mailed a check off today for an electrical permit. Time for me to do something.
I got the meter socket hung today. Then it got dark out so I quit. Tomorrow I'll hang the panel and hopefully get started on wiring the circuits. I want to speak with the local inspector before I start to see what he likes done.

The power company stopped out this morning to look at the site. They want about $1900 to run a 200 amp service 180' if we do it now, or $1200 if I wait until the frost is out of the ground. For $700 I think I can wait.

Today I installed the service panel and plumbed it to the meter socket I hung yesterday. Then put in 500' of wire and 20 boxes for outlets. I put on about 7 miles today. All up and down the ladder.

Tomorrow I have another 20 boxes to install for lights.

I made some aluminum spacers to mount the meter socket on the side of the building. I don't know the 'correct' way to do it, but I think this will be OK.

This is looking up at the service panel. I used schedule 80? pvc for this. Not sure what's required, but this seemed like the best stuff HD had.

Great building. I live in the city and could only go 1000sq ft, but I could fill 2000 in a heart beat - and I don't even have a motorhome.

(I always shed a tear when I see how bad "poor" farmers have it! )

I wish I was a "poor" farmer. I have 2 1/2 acres. The plowed fields surrounding me are not mine. I work in a factory.

Yesterday I installed another 20 boxes for outlets in the ceiling to power the lights. And another 500' of wire. Ugh!

I am guessing another two full days of work and I will be ready for the inspection.

I guess I will find out if it's a problem or not. My buddy at work is a master electrician and I've been running all this past him. He didn't seem to have a problem with the panel location, but it's been 10 years since he has done any residential stuff.

I have 5 outlets and 4 switches left to wire, and also hang an outside light over the service door. I have to find a fixture I like first. Then my ME buddy will come over and wire the panel to the meter socket and install the ground rod. Then I'll be ready for the inspection.

Very Very nice building!! Makes my 24x36 look a toy. I don't know what your plans of insulating are, but you should probably put insulation behind the electric box, it's a pain in the **** to do afer all the wires are pulled

Hey Jimmy, nice build! I was checking out the pics in your first post and thought 'wow! that really looks local.' I scrolled back up and saw Shakopee. I'm in Spring Lake TWP (s of Prior Lake), so your even closer than I was expecting.

I'll be watching to see what you learn about tapping into your septic. I have a 24x36 (stick building) and it has gas heat, 100 amp panel (plenty for me) and no water. I bought it this way and I can't figure out why they wouldn't have added water when it was built. They even dug a phone line to tie into the house. Btw, mine's too small. I'd love to add a 'high' bay to add a lift since my ceilings are 9' to make it 36x36, but that will have to wait till the house is updated.

Let me know how the inspectors are. I was in Lakeville till 1-1/2 years ago and their inspectors were great. I have no experience yet with Scott Co.

Hello neighbor!

I am going to add water, but I won't be tapping into the septic system. The most I will have is a utility sink & floor drain, and those will get day lighted. I think hooking to the septic can become an issue in this type of building. They don't want people washing parts in a sink that has septic. My neighbor's shop has a bathroom hooked to the septic, the rest is day lighted. But I am talking from hearsay, I have no idea what the rules really are.

The only inspector we dealt with so far is the county building guy. He was great. Did a footing inspection, then a framing inspection. We were told they wouldn't sign off on a final until we had grass coming on all the ground we disturbed, but when he was here for the framing inspection, he told my wife to call him back once the garage doors were in and he'd just sign the final now since it looked like we didn't tear up much at all. I was shocked. Real nice guy.

My ME buddy just left and knows the electrical inspector. I am told he is a good guy too. I will find out soon.

Finally got ambitious enough to walk outside and take a few pictures. My master electrician buddy was just here and sounded real positive. He deals with the local inspector all of the time and says he's a good guy.

Things I might have to change....

1. The four circuits I ran for outlets along the walls are all GFI protected, the three
circuits in the ceiling for lights are not. I don't want to put GFIs in the ceiling where they would be a pain to reset if they trip. But I'm cheap enough that I didn't want to spend $40/breaker just yet either. We'll see if outlets 14' high need GFI protection. Easy enough to change breakers if I have to.

2. I used standard outlets in the ceiling, the inspector may want to see twist locks. A single twist lock outlet costs about the same as 10 standard outlets. I'm cheap. I haven't bought the male cord ends for the lights yet in case I end up changing those outlets to twist locks.

3. The last one made me the most concerned. I ran the romex into the box using the hole closest to the mounting surface, rather than the farthest one. My ME buddy says it's been so long since he's done residential that he forgot to warn me about that. This is the one that would take the most time to change if I have to since EVERY box I wired is this way. DOH! Oh well, live and learn.
