Things have been moving a little slow the last few days. I took the weekend off to spend time with the wife and tomorrow I'm putting new tires on her car. That will keep her happy for a while.

Yesterday i put a coat of stain on the top and edge of the 2x4s i used to space out the pavers so they won't be under the tin. Only 1/4 to 1/2" will be visible after the pavers are installed, but since they're green treated they would look awful. This should clean it up a bit and it's easier to do it now with no pavers in the way.

I also got the section to the left of the driveway leveled and compacted. It's now ready for paver installation.

Yesterday I dug a small trench to install a PVC pipe to use as conduit so i can run power out of the garage to feed a couple of lights i will install along the sidewalk when it is complete. When the power company installed the main feed a few years ago they put the conduit to the meter out of plumb and it hurt my eyes every time i looked at it, so I straightened that out while i was digging as well. I finished leveling and compacting the remaining areas along the building where pavers are to be installed.

I started throwing pavers down yesterday. I've been looking at 6 pallets full sitting in the driveway for the last two months, it's nice to see them slowly disappear.

Laying down guides for sand leveling and making small adjustments for the final grade.

The pallets of pavers are about 250' from where I'm working. This is how I move them to the job site. You can see my cheesy wet saw here too.

My two Assclowns staying out of the way, finally, after getting hollered at for walking through my freshly graded sand. At least they can sometimes entertain themselves.

Thanks guys.

I managed to get the side done today but was hoping to have accomplished a little more. I had a little rain this morning that held me up and I made three trips to the landscape supplier for 1.5 tons of class 5 gravel, 1.5 tons of washed sand and 1.5 tons of black dirt.

I stubbed out in front of the door for a 4' wide sidewalk over to the house. That will be next after i get the garage pavers done.

Tomorrow I will tackle the far side of the driveway.

I got all the pavers around the garage finished today. Tomorrow is spreading some polymeric sand on them and vibrating to lock them in place, then i can call this part of my project done. I still have 3 1/2 pallets of pavers to install for my sidewalk. That will tie the house and garage together nicely. I think this really cleaned up the look and makes the garage look much nicer than it is.

Pavers look great good job I've done installs for 8 years alot of work. Couple questions on your building that I didnt see or may have missed. I'm looking to build one same size as this is all code will allow. So what brand pole building is it? What is the size of your overhangs? And for gutters did those come matched to color or did you have to paint them? Everything looks awesome.

The building was built by a company called Walters. They and Morton were the same company until about the late 70s when a group of engineers left Morton to start Walters. Walters and Morton are top of the line and definitely the most expensive. I had bids from 7 different builders, but after many questions about warrant, materials and engineering I only felt comfortable with Morton and Walters. You get what you pay for, and on an investment this large I didn't want to cheap out.

The overhangs are 1'. I would have liked to have 2' on the overhang, but they wanted another $1,800 for that and I didn't think it was worth it, but it would have looked a little nicer. The little options like this (overhangs, service doors, windows, gutters) is where they get you. The windows were $500 ea. A lot of money for what they are.

The gutters came matched, so no painting involved.
The paint on the steel (as well as the steel itself) varies greatly from builder to builder and I would suggest that you look at buildings done by whoever you choose that have been up for 10 years or more. I did and found that Morton and Walters were the only two builders in my area that didn't have faded paint after a few years. The warranty on the finish varies among builders too as well as how a builder deals with it. Most were willing to come back and paint the building later on if a warranty issue were to arise. Walters will replace the steel panel rather than paint the existing one.

While all these pole sheds may look the same when first erected, they certainly are not the same over time. I have about 60k in this project to this point and need another 20k to install a floor and finish the inside, so to have saved 10K up front on the building itself didn't seem like much of a savings in the long run.

Good luck on your build and make sure you start a thread for all of us to follow along. And so we can steal your ideas! Where in MN are you? I'm between Shakopee and Jordan.

Here is my paver sidewalk from the house to the garage that I finished last fall. It ties it all together pretty nicely. And my dogs don't poop on it, so I can now walk to the garage without worrying about the minefield the two Assclowns leave.

I just read thru the entire thread! Great looking building, Jimmy! I have a barn built in the late 60's that I converted into a 1700 sf shop and plan on having a 30 x 50 like yours built in the next few years.

Jimmy,
Looks great man glad your still posting on this with new updates, gives a guy like me a lot of motivation. Right now I'm looking at about the same footprint as 2000sf is the limit but trying to push for 16' sidewalls. I might end up going with menards kit and building myself as thats where my budget is.

Was thinking of 18" overhang instead of 12" but not sure if its worth extra cost. So far I had to clear about 20 trees and bring in 300 tons of fill but still need at least another 200 tons. The back side of where I want this built was raised 4 1/2 ft. I built a 96' retaining wall with steps as one side of my building will have a lean-to on it. Was either shooting for 36x56 or 34x60 not quite sure yet.

I live in Grey Cloud Island. If you ever heard of that place its a township so its a little easier to get a variance for certain things. I wouldn't mind checking out your building someday if you don't mind. When weather gets a bit nicer/ warmer let me know what kind of barley pop to bring. I appreciate all the feedback and your write up as this is a learning curve for me. Here are few photos.7b3f75b1e0acb54f981e8c4468310afd.jpg9f7091a694ddbb46f17ebed473cee854.jpgf0d368a80693e62f62cef67d584f0cbb.jpg49d115775e4faaf05b78281b60041f15.jpgf13aabcf25694c0ddcc55df480d2e9a6.jpg

Not bad but seeing pavers installed with long straight lines kills it for me. Might be the pictures but the walkway and one pad appear to have a ton of pitch.

Your site prep and retaining wall look amazing Paul. I can appreciate the time and labor you have in it. I thought about building myself too, but not for very long as it seemed like a little larger project that i wanted to commit to. It certainly is doable though. And judging by what you've already done in guessing you wouldn't have a problem getting it done.

You're welcome to stop by any time to take a look and I'd be more than happy to show you the differences in how this was constructed and others.

Jimmy
