I picked this Black & Decker No. 53536 Bench Grinder Pedestal Type E stand off of Craigslist.

I will be installing casters on it soon.

I also picked up this semi drum this weekend to make a telescoping stand for my Wilton vise. This thing weighs 108 pounds.

For the grinder, I'd add a wider base for more stability,as if you move it, and the wheels catch on a crack or something on the floor, the grinder may take a tumble.

That drum is a good base. Just don't plan on welding any steel to it with a mig and solid wire. It will crack as soon as it cools i learned that when i welded a pedistal fan to one. I had to have a welder friend of mine Tig mine with a rod, of which I don't remember the type of. I have three of those drums. Here are two

What size round pipe is that you have affixed to that drum?

Thanks for the heads up as I was planning on stick welding it but now I will have to see what rod I will have to use to tig weld it with.

Do you know what type was used?

Any ideas?

It's 8" sch40. Fits perfect. I'll have to ask what he used. The cast iron of the drum cools differently than the steel. So one shrinks faster than the other. I think iirc the cast cools faster and heats slower. So he had to pre heat the cast before welding. I'll try and get you a answer on the welding rod. The taller stand is to mount a grinder to. The vise is just sitting there. You will want to put some type of casters on them, cause rolling them like a barrel *****!
This is what I'm mounting on the tall one right after I restore it.

Here's another option if you don't want to weld to the wheel. I made this stand with 5" channel uprights and 6" X 1/2" angle welded together for the top.
