Greg,
I thought you might be talking about one of our airlifters! The C-5 is one helluva damn big plane!
I'm an Engineer at the Lockheed plant in Ga. where the C-5's were built and we currently build the C-130, F-22 and part of the F-35. Currently I'm on the F-35 program.
Thanks for serving our country.
Mike

I'll be damned - I hauled some of the first engine nacelles for the upgrade to Marietta out of Foley, AL for the C-5Bs back around '85 if I remember right.

I've been gone a couple years Mike - just back and catching up on a thread I'd subscribed to when you were first going up. Beautiful results my friend, just beautiful.

And thank you for what you do.

Lockheed is re-engining the C-5 fleet now and we're painting the nacelles in the Coatings shop. The plane is much quieter with the new engines installed!

And thanks for the compliments.

Heheh...

I grew up in the flight path of Westover AFB in MA as a small kid, and let me tell you, we knew when a C5 was coming for several miles before it flew overhead (at our house it was around 3500FT above us)

Even as an adult, and an engineer, the fact that those things fly still amazes me.

Wow this thread started like 5 years ago and still going strong. Just spent 2 hours reading through the build of a dream shop. Great job. Any updates since your all moved in and filling it up?

Wow!
I've fallen behind on posting on my own build thread.
First thanks for the complements and questions, it still amazes me that this thread keeps going.

I'm also on the F35 as an ME in the Finishes Planning. We're doing all the horizontals, verticals & rudders for y'all. Also finishes for all the spare doors, panels & covers.

"Mike-
If you don't mind saying how much did the Socket Systems kit cost you?"

AFSilverado,
You need to get with Socket Systems, I bought those pieces 4 or 5 years ago. I will assure you that it's an expensive method.

cderalow,
I'm still amazed they fly but they are much quieter now.

Thanks Guys,
Mike

From one Mike to another , your building looks great . Hopefully my new son-in-law will eventually be flying one of your F22's or F35's in the future , he's currently in flight training at Columbus AFB . Thanks for posting your pics.

There's no question its a beautiful barn, but I'm gonna question the engineering. The roof load for BOTH roofs on a monitor style barn lands where the lower roof joins the upper wall. Where is the supporting member?
I too built a monitor style barn, and the engineering had me using two 5x24 glu lams across the entire length spanning no more than 20 feet at a time. Think about the load at that seam. its huge duing winter snows.
I'm no engineer, but I'd sure like to see the numbers on that.

Mike Your barn is gorgeous!
I was searching for info when I found your thread and the above quote and hope to learn something here...
In post 266 you have a collar tie shown in red for the upper level.
Would a first level collar tie (actually laid across the top of the walls) be a good idea? In my case, I am thinking of having the center section of the building wider than yours. Thank you for your opinion

An index has been created for the Garage Gallery build threads and I submitted yours on behalf of the Garage Journal community. We are trying to capture as many inactive threads as possible so I hope you don't mind. It will serve as a placeholder until you log in and check it for accuracy. Should you find errors, you can easily submit your own entry and mine will be deleted.

Drop in and give us an update if you have a moment.

I know this is kinda old. But i just wanted to say that i was looking for a build thread on the socket systems and joined just to see your pictures. it looks great and i will be calling at lunch to get a price on the system to see it if economically reasonable over clear span trusses. What i love about this kit is how the poles are not buried in the ground since pressure treated lumber aint what it used to be.

Thanks!

Love this build!

How do/did you seal the rolling doors at the bottom to the slab, between the bypass doors, and from the inner door to the structure?
