My new garage was started today. The dimensions are 24' x 36' x 10' (high)

It will have a single 16 x 8' door and a thicker area of the slab in the back to allow for a lift down the road.

The excavator was here today and tore into the ground. The builder should be here tomorrow to set the poles. I am really hoping they have the most of it up the end of the week.

I was off today (presidents day) so I was able to take pictures as they worked. It is going to be hard making it through each day to see the progress. Check this thread for daily updates.

It will contain my DD (91 BMW 318is) my wifes DD (06 MINI Copper S) and my fun car (1970 BMW 2002, with lots of mods) as well as room for another. I really want a fiat 500 or some sort of small convertible.....

actually yesterday it wasn't to bad, around 33 degrees. Today it is pretty cold, around 19 or so. I hope they are there working right now.

I am thinking of setting up a web cam tonight so I can watch from work tomorrow.... Is that a little over the top? I guess I am posting on a garage forum so...

I'm about to draw up some plans for a new building about the same size as yours. I too am interested in any thoughts on insulation. Especially for a pole structure. My local lumberyard says they have a new 8' wide roll fiberglass just for this application.

I used a 1" Styrofoam product from a pole building supply house that's white on one side and silver on the other. If I remember correctly it has an R value of ~14. I nailed it right to the purlins inside and then put drywall over that since it dents easy. And make sure the contractor is going to insulate your roof (if it's metal like mine)...otherwise it'll sweat and "rain" on you. My guy used this stuff they call "double bubble". It's essentially 2 pieces of heavy bubble wrap put bubbles together that's silver on one side and white on the other. You can see it above my trusses in the pic below. It actually does a pretty decent job. I don't have permanent heat out there yet, but it's pretty decent in ~20-30mins w/ a propane bullet heater.

Not over the top at all. Almost mandatory if you can work it out

Cheers!

I hope you can keep the cam inside the house pointed toward the garage. I've lost 2 outside web cams because of the cold.

Nice start. Gotta love Michigan winters. Is the contractor setting the posts on concrete piers? From the looks of the last photos not all the posts are set. Just curious as the building inspector in Ka'zoo had to inspect the holes for the correct pier depth and usually they don't like coming back later to signoff on the permit. Keep the pics coming and enjoy the fun.

tdkkart -- we're up to +90 inches for the year in lower Michigan, we have so much salt on the roads that even on clear days they are white.

I had to work late tonight so didn't get a chance to get any pictures in the day light. I have one small one from mid-day. I will get better ones tomorrow.

Yes the posts are sitting on concrete "cookies". The inspector did come before they started to check the posts.

I was able to walk around in it tonight and really see the space I am going to have. its going to be really nice.

The slab will come once everything is closed in. They are going to heat it for a couple days and then pour the slab.

Does anyone know how long you need to wait before a car can be parked on the slab?

A quick update. We had a nice warm spell here in Michigan. So some of the snow is gone and we even got to see the sun for a few days. The got a lot of work done today and said they will have it done tomorrow. Should have the slab poured before the weekend maybe.

here are some pictures.

Looking good! I bet you're getting excited now!

Your builder is progressing quick. I'm getting ready to build this spring, send me a message with your builders info if you are happy with them. (and they are in the Lansing area of course)

Yes he has only really worked about 2.5 days and has gotten a lot done. I am up in the tri cities so a little bit away from Lansing.

Yes I am VERY excited. I went shopping for work bench frames this weekend. Its great when my wife wanted to go look for things.

The top for my work bench will be a 2' x 7' stainless steel elevator door. It weighs about 80lbs and should work out really good.

I found some nice modular shelving units that I think will work out really good.

I think I am as excited about setting things up as I will to be able to work in it.

A lot has happened on the build. Everything is done except the slab. Right now the garage is being heated through the weekend and they are supposed to pour the cement on Monday. About a week to let it cure and I should be able to start moving things in.

here are some pictures. I will post some inside ones once the slab is poured

Is that in NY? If so, would you mind providing a ballpark on materials?

Here are a couple of pictures of the inside. As you can see I am still waiting on concrete. I am hoping to see it when I get home tomorrow or tuesday....

It is hard to judge size right now. But it is pretty big....and will fit 3-4 cars...

I kept thinking that the delay on the cement pour was to give you time to rethink the perrimeter and under floor rigid foam insulation but I see I was probably mistaken.

Well originally they told me 6 days start to finish. I guess it will end up being 6 days but spread out over 6 weeks.

Either way it is going to be done before I would have it done and I will have all spring and summer to really use it and finish the yard now.

I have concrete now. I started moving things in today. I need to wait about another week before I can part on it. So no cars yet.

My work bench is a 100lbs+ stainless steel ELEVATOR door. I need to clean it up but it should work great. 2' x 7'

On to some pictures

yes they are 4x6
Most of the posts are 8' OC
Yes they are standard 4/12 pitch trusses
I believe they are 2x8/10s. One on each side of the post and there is also a 2x6 going vertically to tie the truss to everything.
