My new garage floor

So I am building a new 1656 sq ft garage. I know I want to do a floor coating. How long do I need to wait to coat it? What kind of prep do I need to do for new concrete? What brand/ type of coatings do you recommend? Does anyone have kits for larger applications? Most of what I have found is for 2 car garages and cover 500 sq ft. Any advice/recommendations are welcome.

Don't stress about the kits. Legacy, us or pretty much any epoxy distributor can build a 'kit' to meet your needs. In a lot of cases you are better off having the kit built to your specs than buying one 'off the shelf' anyway.

Anyone have any experience with Epoxy-coat. I like the single coat. They have an industrial kit that covers 2500 sq ft for under 1k. I found a couple really old posts and the reviews seem mixed but leaning towards the positive.

They make a great product. Putting 100% solids epoxy to concrete without a primer is a dice-roll(with any mfg). The bubble fairy might visit you.

Check how many gals you are getting vs.stated and mil thickness. Also in a working shop not topcoating is very rare

Little off topic here but I have an existing floor coating in the garage of a house I bought. Seems like homeowner/Home Depot type epoxy. It's chipping and delaminating in some areas. How do I remove it and start over?

The best way to remove it and prep the floor is by grinding it off.

Check how many gals you are getting vs.stated and mil thickness. Also in a working shop not topcoating is very rare

It has 15 gallons and will cover 2500 sq ft at 9.7mil but can be applied at up tp 20mil thick. Adding 15 gallons of primer is less than $500. Considering it's a new floor and I don't think the primer is needed. 5 gallons of clear is also less than $500.

I ended up getting Epoxy-Coat.
3 full kits and one 1/2 kit, plus the contractor kit with spike shoes and 18" rollers. Total $1200 for 1700sq ft of coverage.

I'm planning to put it down this weekend. I try to take lots of pics and give an update.

I wish this forum had been around 20 years ago. I put 100% solids over a 3 month old slab (1400 sqft) without primer.

It had bubbles like you wouldn't believe. I lived with it but never knew what the issue was.....the floor was durable as hell but it just didn't look great.

I power washed, acid etched and power washed again.
Let dry, and then coated.
3 1/2 kits of Epoxy-Coat Gray with gray/blue flake and anti skid.
I did not diamond grind as it is a new floor and has never seen any traffic. I did not use a primer since Epoxy-Coat says it isn't always needed. I did get a few bubbles but they were fixed easily with a leaf blower. I could see the benefit of using primer, but I don't think it is always needed. Overall, I am very pleased with the results.

The bubble issue rises considerably with a diamond grind as the pores are more open. This is also a GREAT reason to diamond grind as it gets you a better lock to the floor.

PS: Many vendors don't recommend a primer because they don't offer one.
