Morning,

I've been itching to get some more storage for a long time...i've always rented and never owned.

I finally bit the bullet and bought a house with 2 barns! Might even be some room for my wife to put her car in 1 of them. maybe.. :)

1 will be for working, the other primarily for storage. There's a lot of work to do in the workshop..it needs a steel beam (knock out the central columns), insulation, heat etc. but it's a start!

Here's a few pics of why i need the storage. 1 alfa is being built for vintage racing. the other 2 cars are just for the street

i love this site. there are so many cool shops and barns, TONS of good inspiration!

Wow, very nice! I really like the barn in the first pic. That would almost match our 100 year old house perfectly!
Nice collection of cars, too!

thanks all,

the white(ish) garage was rebuilt where an older barn stood. so much so that some of the lumber is reclaimed. sounds cool...but makes some of framing...unique, shall i say.

the blue one is an old haybarn. that'll be mostly for storage, with a pottery studio up top (for my better half)

as for the cars,

the red one got a heart transplant earlier this year.

the camaro got a facelift about 2 yrs ago (this was actually my first car..still have it!)

and the white alfa..well, that's been a bit more of a job. i'm about 2 yrs into that one. but i should have it on the track next year.

jbs, nice barn yourself! i grew up in delmar..in fact my bro. still live in ballston spa. saratoga springs is a great little town. i've yet to make it to the car museum though.

a lot of good inspiration on these boards! so after some planning..it's time i started work. i'm gonna get garage 1 done and working first. this consists of knocking out the dividing wall, installing some steel to open the space up, moving and widening the staircase and then wiring/insulation. after making the calc's for the steel, i stripped out the center wall so that i can get the pad's prepped and poured.

with barn 2..my plan is to open up the second story and leave only about a 10-12' mezzanine. because it'll be tough to get steel for a crane in this garage (gambrel roof), i'm thinking about building a 360 deg. jib crane. anyone tried building (or buying and installing) one of these? once i get the loads worked out..i'm envisioning a vertical steel tube with another section slid over it with an i-beam extending off and a tie rod securing it to the top. something like this.

any thoughts?

some pics, garage 1 upstairs, then garage 1 dividing wall coming down, then garage 2 upstairs (what will eventually be 85% removed)

Love Garage in number 1 pic - gorgeous. You have some great space to work in with terrific atmosphere and ambience.

Also +1 on the Alfa's. Fantastic cars. Keen to see progress of rebuild on the white one.

First track day with the white car is apr. 17...but I've got a ton of work to finish on it! It's built to VSCDA specs so i can race it there next year.

after gathering material for a few weeks and double checking the calc's...i coaxed my father and brother to come out for a week to put it all up.

everything went pretty well. we weren't able to pull the second story into alignment as much as we hoped (the lack of a ridge beam didn't help in the straightening process), but we pulled it from about 5.5" of lean to just over 2. we quit there due to concerns about the roof and added all of the 2x8 rafters and collar ties (as planned) ..and wound up framing in 2 new walls on the second floor since the old ones were too far out of plumb (unplanned). the electrical is coming along to be followed shortly by insulation.

i love it when a plan comes together

Great buildings, great cars. You've got some serious skills when it comes to rebuilding those cars. Can you give us a little history on the white GTV? Did you convert it to a race car, or was it always a race car? Will it be eligible for vintage racing?

The white car was a rusted hulk when i bought it (street car)....but 2 yrs later and it's ready for some abuse on the track. i replaced the entire rear clip..new trunk floor...removed the side impact beams...new door skins...new floors (including a custom aluminum floor for the lowerd race seat)...new sills...8 pt cage....new roof...there's not much of the original car left.

this is the shakedown year..so only open track days. but once i get the fire system, window straps etc. in place, It'll be eligible for VSCDA for next year.

so things are progressing.

building 1 (the blue one) is all wired and nearly completely insulated.

i spent last week running natural gas to both buildings, new dedicated 100 amp service to the beige building along with a complete rewire (with dedicated compressor and welder circuits) and i ran water to the blue building. the water comes out of the house above grade because i was concerned about drilling a hole below grade in a stone foundation. so it'll just need to be winterized each year...but not a big deal i think. how much pottery can the wife do in january anyway!

for anyone in michigan, consumers energy has an awesome service where they'll precut and pressure test fuel line, and put the risers on for you to bury and install.

i need to find a better way to seal the carraige doors this winter. does anyone have experience with a good way to seal them up on the bottom? the current wiper style seal *****.

my plan for my garage (The beige one) has always been to remove 75% of the second floor leaving only a mezzanine. this will get me additional ceiling height to lift my cars and also allow a trolley on the (upcoming) steel beam. with that in mind I've been watching for some high bay lights to hang..but that would fit with the style of the building. i found a guy right down the street who had 15 old 18" porcelain high bay lights. i picked up 6. he's got 9 more if anyone around this area is interested. most have swivels too,

"new" french doors are in upstairs. there will eventually be a railing on the outside to keep everyone in...but they're in and sealed for the winter,

"new" because i found them at the local habitat for humanity Re-Store. helluva place!
