More of a lurker than a poster on these boards, but i've just completed my latest project and i'd thought i'd share.

The basic dimensions are (roughly) 50" wide, 24" high and 22" deep.

The drawers on the left are 28"wide, the top two being 2" deep and the other four 3" deep. The drawers on the right are 15" wide and 5" deep

It is made of Rimu, which is a native to New Zealand timber, used a lot in furniture these days but was previously used for almost everything in older buildings, until it became quite scarce. Most Rimu used nowadays is recycled from old buildings (as was mine). As you can see its a beautiful timber which i have finished with a light coat of linseed oil.

Got the timber for $200 (exchange rate to $US is about 2:1 currently, so about $100US)
Plus miscellaneous items the entire project set me back about $300NZ. please dont ask what it cost in manhours, probably between 50 and 75, so in $$.......lots. My wife pretty much threatened to divorce me after being in the garage almost all my spare time for the last 4 weeks so i'm glad its finished. :bounce:

Please ignore the awful hinge/lock on the front, it was the easiest way to make it lockable and i'm still working on a way to make it better, any suggestions would be appreciated!

Wow, really nice work; kind of reminds me of the USA Gerstner boxes... maybe you can use them for inspiration on your next box! Oops! Maybe not! Check 'em out here: http://www.gerstnerusa.com/
I can only imagine the amount of time and work that went into your project... :) Good job! What are you going to use them for? Precision instruments (e.g. machinist measurement tools) or some other special purpose? After all that work; I would almost be afraid to use it!

looks great!!! Great looking wood! I know how the wife thing goes, mine is always complaining I'm in the garage too much.

Thats a beautiful box. I'd rather have it than a Gerstner because its got its own unique character.
Good idea using recycled wood. If I make my own box that'l be the way I do it .

Thanks guys for the feedback.

To answer some of the questions, Billymade, it wont have any specialist tools in it, i'm an electrician working in the fuel industry at the moment so just regular tools. You're right it almost does seem a shame to use it, but i can fix it or rebuild it if it gets worn or broken, so its all part of the fun. It may seem overboard but i've needed a bigger box for a while and something in a similar size from snap-on etc would cost me upwards of $2000. This way it costs me a lot less and at the end i have something that i am genuinely proud to own. Also i just wanted to see if i could do it!

I have considered lining the drawers, Furious George, but i just love the look when i open a drawer and all you see is wood. The only down side is that the insides of the drawers will probably get very dirty and damaged over time, but i can always line them later if thats the case.

Had a look at the Gerstner site, let me tell you, those things are a lot higher quality than mine! I would love to spend a few weeks in their shop learning some tricks

BTW The wife did come around a little when it was finished, se grudgingly admitted it looked "kinda nice"

What about a sheet of lexan on the bottom of each drawer to protect the wood?
That really is a beautiful chest. I'd much rather have something like that than a standard tool chest, provided it would slide open and closed as easy.
Finished product's gotta ease your wife... I mean it looks that good.
