Wow, awesome machine! I have it's younger little brother, the head stock gear box is truly a work of art.
Good luck, Jim

It's 16.5" swing, 78" center to center and weighs in the neighborhood of 7000 pounds.
The folks at monarch are great, very helpful with any questions even regarding there products built 73 years ago.

I take it do you mostly do watch parts? :lol_hitti Congrats on the new lathe, hopefully unloading it will not present any "excitements".

On a serious note, what type of work do you have in mind for the old work horse?

Mostly repair work on farm and logging equipment. I don't plan to turn any hypodermic needles on it yet.

One interesting note, he was trying to sell it for years. He said it was 30hp and that scared people off, I bought it at about 1/3 the asking price. A quick peek at the motor revealed thAt it was indeed only 7.5hp. Perfect!

30hp  Did he say that with a straight face? Could you run it before purchase? 3ph I assume?

He had never hooked it up, the previous owner hadn't either. I'm not sure where he got that number. I'm sure thAt he had never had the door off the motor cabinet. I emailed monarch and they told me there was little chance of getting a motor of that size in the cabinet and that it had not left there with ions in it.
Yes it's 3 phAse, I will likely use a vfd to power it.

Axles, bale spears, drive shafts, hydraulic cylinder repair... Whatever one needs built or repaired.
Hopefully everything works ok.

Nice lathe!!! Even if you have to spend some time and money to get it back into shape, that lathe has the power, weight, and accuracy that isn't made anymore. New stuff is built light, and anything not CNC has had little development in the last 50 years.

I am of the opinion that the sweet spot in simple machine tools was 1940 to 1975. After 1975 quality went downhill because of imports.

I'll bet that one of the earlier owners mistook the 3 phase marking on the motor for a horsepower rating. The phase symbol is a 0 with a slash through it, and would look like "30" to someone who didn't know much about electrical symbols.

I lucked out and found a dirt cheap 15HP VFD for my 7.5 HP Monarch, but if I didn't, I would have installed a 5 HP single phase motor. 220 volt VFD's that large are somewhat tough to come by.
Good luck, Jim

That's a nicely proportioned machine for general shop work. If it's in good operable order it should do quite a bit of work for you.

I put a 220 single phase motor in my Colchester. Pretty easy to switch motors. Did the same with my Bridgeport Mill but for it I had to make an adapter plate which was tricky since I didn't have a working mill to do it with. Actually I had to use my lathe to machine a new pulley for the lathe motor as well. I had to run it with a grossly undersized motor whilest making the pulley was interesting to say the least.

I love the vfd on my Bridgeport, I think it would be even better on a lathe. It would be super cool to be able to adjust the speed in a facing cut.

Nice looking lathe!! Monarchs are great machines. Did you get any tooling with it? Also, wondering if this is your only lathe or do you have a smaller one for smaller parts?

He's going to make tool steel toothpicks with that beast...

Everything made in the 40's (like me!!!) is heavy duty, dead straight, and really cute...

Best of luck with your new "seriously big lathe"...

The tooling that came with it was pretty limited. I plan to put a quick change tool post on it. I also need to find a 3 jaw chuck. It has a 4 jaw on it now.
It is my only lathe at the moment. If I can get enough work I plan to build a new shop with more space for more tools.

Got it unloaded, went ok but it was stressfull! These c series are hard to lift so I rolled it off the back on pipe rollers.

Building runners and skis is a safe way to do it if you don't have lifting equipment.

Good work!

The serious amount of snow in my yard was a factor, no place to maneuver heavy equipment. Once it was on the skid and bolted down it was way more stable and rolling it off was a piece of cake!

What type of chuck mount does it have? I just got in an almost new Cushman 3 & 4 jaw chuck set for a L-0 mount I'm looking to sell...
