Boat talk for lunch anchor. Decided I wanted one of the "advanced design" anchors to use as my lunch hook. Checking the West Marine cat. for selection and prices, I was shocked to see this similar design and size listed for $1,649.00.
So I thought, I have enough stainless leftovers to make my own. Decided on the Mantus design, but I needed to custom make it to fit one of my transom fish boxes.
After lots of doubling and joining pieces, I finished it this evening. Decided I did not need the polished look. For anyone interested in how well the Mantus hooks-up, there are lots of You Tube demos.
Another fun project.

For that kind of money I would be tempted to make some jigs and start cranking them out. I wouldn't have much luck selling them here in CO, but where I winter they would probably be a big hit. :) Mike

X2. I am definitely in the wrong business.

HAP, that looks great, very professional  How did you finish it?
What's going to be on the other end of the rope? :bounce:

Nice construction.

What kinds of bottoms is that ****** best for? And which does it do least well on?

You can check out this video to see how it was tested/compared. There are other videos there as well some actual underwater hook ups too.

I was going to build a Manson Supreme replica until I saw the Mantus' performance.

I'm not familiar with the Mantis specifically, but I've used a Rocna (very similar) in the PNW and found it really good. If I were to replace my current main anchor (44 lb Delta) it would be with one of these designs.

As to what sort of bottoms they work best in - most everything except weeds/grass. Nothing works very well in weeds it seems. My Delta does 'ok' in that department, but not great.

I do wonder about the price though - $1400?? Sure you can spend that sort of money on an anchor, but usually you're talking a polished s/s trophy or something over 100 lbs. I don't know how big your piece is, but if it's a lunch hook it sure isn't 100 lbs unless your real name is Paul Allen or Larry Ellison.

Check this link and challenge "them" about size/weight since they appear to be unaware of your price vs size subject matter expert staus...

That is very nice! similar to some I have made for very large boats and the really go down. Here is my prized stainless one that I just let go with my boat.

Boy, I don't think I could have let that anchor go. Too cool. I would have kept it just to hang on the wall and show off what you made. Really nice!

I stand corrected. Though I wonder just how many they sell....maybe I'll call my port supply rep and ask just for kicks.

I have sold one high-dollar anchor - a full polish s/s piece (forget what brand it was now...been several years) that a wife bought as a Christmas gift for her husband's new 57 Carver. Seems like that was a couple grand. Otherwise, even on good size boats, I rarely have anybody asking for stuff in that price range. Especially as a lunch hook! Usually I set guys up with a nice light weight Fortress for a spare/stern anchor since they rarely have a stern windlass or good place to store it.

If I spent $1,649.00 for a ****** anchor I would have an anchor bouy the size of a blimp.

I just went to that West Marine link and HOLY ****! A fool and his money.

Why the large ring on the backside?

The ring causes the anchor to self-right if it lands upside down. Seems to be quite effective.

Another thing for larger ones is a retrieve line they can only be pulled up from that end.

Thanks; he was pretty sure his kid was going to steel it.
